The morning light filtered through the paper windows, casting a warm glow over the room. The air was thick with the lingering scent of last night's activities, and the soft sound of steady breathing filled the space.
I shifted slightly, glancing down at Mitsuri, who lay curled up beside me, her pink and green hair spread across the pillow like a cascade of silk. Her face was peaceful, a small smile resting on her lips even in sleep.
It seemed she wouldn't be waking up anytime soon. Given how intense last night was, I wasn't surprised.
Just as I was about to close my eyes again, a familiar voice echoed in my mind.
"There is someone waiting outside, dear. Get dressed and meet her; otherwise, she's going to be angry with you."
I sighed, rubbing my forehead. "Who is it, Death?"
"That's a surprise," she said, a teasing lilt in her voice.
I sat up, careful not to disturb Mitsuri as I swung my legs over the side of the futon. My body had recovered instantly thanks to my abilities, but the same couldn't be said for Mitsuri. Smiling slightly, I pulled the blanket up to her shoulders before standing and stretching. Whoever was waiting for me had better have a good reason for showing up this early.
As I dressed, my thoughts wandered. There weren't many people who would seek me out so persistently that even Death would take the time to notify me. It had to be someone important.
Once I was fully clothed, I stepped outside, the morning air cool against my skin. The sun had barely begun to rise, and the mansion grounds were quiet.
Waiting near the entrance was a familiar figure. Long black hair, streaked with violet, cascaded down her back, and a teasing yet somewhat irritated smile played on her lips.
Akeno.
She turned as I approached, her deep violet eyes locking onto mine, her arms crossed beneath her ample chest.
"You finally decided to show up," she said, her voice smooth yet carrying an unmistakable edge.
I smirked. "I wasn't expecting you, Akeno. What brings you here?"
She let out a soft sigh, tilting her head slightly. "I missed you."
I raised an eyebrow. "Missed me enough to track me down in another world?"
She stepped closer, her scent—a mix of lightning and sweet lavender—filling the air between us. "Of course. Did you think I would just sit back and wait for you to return when I had the means to find you myself?"
I chuckled. "I suppose I shouldn't be surprised."
Akeno's gaze flickered toward the mansion behind me, and her smile turned knowing. "I arrived around midnight, but since you were… preoccupied, I decided not to disturb you."
I raised an eyebrow. "Oh? And you didn't barge in? That's not like you."
She chuckled, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "As much as I would have loved to interrupt, I figured I'd let you enjoy your time. Instead, I spent the night talking with Shinobu."
That caught my attention. "Shinobu?"
Akeno nodded, her teasing demeanor fading slightly. "She's an interesting woman, sharp-tongued but kind. We talked a lot... mostly about you."
I tilted my head. "About me? Should I be worried?"
Akeno shook her head. "No. But after speaking with her, I realized something important." She stepped closer, her voice turning serious. "You need to make her fall for you quickly."
I blinked at the sudden shift in conversation. "Come again?"
Akeno sighed, her expression softening. "Shinobu reminds me of my past self."
That made me pause. Akeno rarely spoke about her past—at least, not in this way.
She continued, her eyes distant. "She wears a smile, but it's not real. It's a mask. I know because I used to do the same thing. She hides her pain, her hatred, her grief behind that gentle expression. She acts as if everything is fine, but deep down, she's drowning in her own self-loathing."
Akeno placed a hand on my chest, looking up at me with quiet determination. "If you don't reach her soon, that hatred will consume her. Just like it almost consumed me."
"Oh, I know that, I am working on it." I said with a smile.
"That put my mind at peace." Then she came close to me and suddenly showered me with kisses. "I really did miss you, you know."
I placed a hand on her cheek, my thumb brushing against her soft skin. "I know. And I appreciate you coming all this way."
Her eyes searched mine before she leaned in slightly, her lips a breath away from mine. "Are you going to make it up to me?"
I smirked. "Wouldn't dream of doing anything else."
Akeno chuckled, but before she could respond, a voice called out from inside the mansion.
"Alex-sama, breakfast is ready!"
It was Yuki.
Akeno sighed, stepping back slightly. "It seems we'll have to continue this later."
I grinned. "Oh, I fully intend to."
