Maelis's POV
I looked at Kieran. "You've competed before?"
"Once." His voice was flat. "I made it to the final round."
"Did you win?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
The silence that followed was deafening.
Kieran's jaw tightened. "Silas."
I stared at him. "Silas won?"
"Every year he competes, he wins." Jace's voice was matter-of-fact. "That's why everyone wants him on their team. But he always competes solo."
I felt my heart sink. "Then what chance do we have against him?"
Jace grinned. "We have something he doesn't have."
"What?"
"A plan."
That evening, the three of us met in a secluded corner of the library.
Jace had spread out a map of the academy grounds, marking potential challenge locations with small X's.
