Chapter 16 - Chapter 7: The Fire of Endurance

The dim glow of magic slowly returned to the suffocating darkness of the mine.

A soft green aura enveloped Kael, spreading from the hands of Evelyn Crest. The wounds that had covered his body moments ago began to close one after another, the torn flesh knitting itself back together as if time itself was reversing.

Kael stood still, breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling as the last traces of pain faded away.

"Hold still… just a little more," Evelyn murmured, her voice calm but slightly strained.

The light flickered once… then stabilized.

After a few seconds, Kael exhaled deeply.

"I'm… fine now," he said, flexing his fingers and rolling his shoulders. "Thank you."

Before Evelyn could respond, Draven stepped forward, his expression filled with concern.

"You call that fine?" he asked, eyes narrowing. "You were standing like a blood-covered ghost back there."

Kael gave a faint smile."I've been through worse."

Draven sighed. "You really need to stop saying that."

Nearby, Captain Garrick Ironvein watched the exchange silently. His sharp gaze lingered on Kael for a moment longer than usual before he finally spoke.

"Enough rest," he said firmly. "We're not done yet."

The authority in his voice cut through the lingering tension.

"Lyra, light the path."

Without hesitation, Lyra Moonfall raised her staff. A soft golden glow blossomed from its tip, expanding outward until the dark tunnel was illuminated once more.

The oppressive darkness retreated… but the unease remained.

Advancing Through the Mine

The team resumed their formation, but this time, things were different.

Garrick turned toward Kael.

"You're leading."

There was no hesitation in his tone.

Kael blinked once. "Understood."

Draven smirked slightly from behind. "Looks like you've been promoted."

Kael didn't respond. Instead, he stepped forward, his senses sharpening instinctively.

The air felt heavier now.

The smell of damp stone… mixed with something else.

Lizard-men.

"They're ahead," Kael said quietly.

The team tightened formation.

Every step forward felt like stepping into uncertainty, but unlike before, they were no longer disorganized.

Now, they moved as one.

A sudden hiss echoed from the darkness.

"Left!" Kael shouted.

Immediately, Brom raised his shield, blocking a spear strike that would have pierced Lyra.

"Behind!" Kael warned again.

Draven reacted instantly, releasing an arrow that struck a Lizard-man mid-leap.

"Nice call!" Draven said.

The battle began again.

But this time—it was controlled.

Kael's voice guided them.

"Two ahead—low stance!""Right side—archer!""Three rushing—brace!"

Every warning came just in time.

Silas moved like a shadow, darting in and out, his daggers slicing through exposed flesh.

"Ha! This is much easier when someone actually tells you where they are," he said with a grin.

Brom stood firm, absorbing blows like an unbreakable wall.

Evelyn continued her support, her magic enhancing their strength and endurance.

Rhen's arrows flew with deadly precision.

And Lyra's light ensured that no one fought blind again.

Wave after wave of Lizard-men fell.

Step by step, they advanced deeper into the mine.

The Dead End and the Giant

Eventually, the tunnel narrowed… and then stopped.

A dead end.

But something felt wrong.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…Something's here."

A low, guttural growl echoed.

Then—

A massive figure stepped into the light.

A Giant Lizardman.

It towered over them, its body thick with muscle, scales hardened like armor. Its glowing eyes burned with primal fury.

"Now that's a problem," Silas muttered.

Garrick stepped forward."Formation. Don't break."

The creature roared—and charged.

The Battle Against the Giant

The clash was immediate.

Silas darted forward first, his daggers striking rapidly.

"Too tough!" he shouted, leaping back as his blades barely scratched the creature's scales.

The Giant swung its massive arm.

Brom stepped in.

"COME AT ME!"

The impact echoed like thunder as Brom blocked the attack with his shield, his feet digging into the ground.

"Nggh… it's strong!"

Evelyn raised her staff."Enhancement!"

A surge of energy flowed into the team.

Kael felt his muscles tighten with newfound strength.

Rhen fired arrows coated in poison.

"Let's see how you like this!"

The arrows struck, embedding into the creature's flesh.

The Giant roared in pain—but didn't stop.

Lyra maintained the light, her focus unwavering.

"Don't lose sight of it!" she called.

Kael moved in.

His sword struck—again and again.

Each blow precise. Each movement calculated.

But even he struggled.

"It's not going down easily…" he muttered.

The creature swung wildly.

Kael dodged—but barely.

Garrick stepped forward.

"Enough."

His sword ignited with flames.

Fire wrapped around the blade, crackling with intensity.

"Everyone—fall back!"

The team obeyed instantly.

Garrick lunged forward.

One strike.

A blazing arc cut through the air.

The Giant Lizardman froze.

Then—

Collapsed.

Silence filled the tunnel.

Mission Complete

Heavy breathing echoed through the mine.

"…That was intense," Draven said.

Garrick sheathed his sword.

"Mission complete. Let's move."

When they emerged from the mine, the cool evening air felt refreshing.

The guards stationed outside rushed toward them.

"Report!" one of them demanded.

Garrick nodded."Mine secured. Lizard-men eliminated."

Relief spread across the guards' faces.

Back at the Adventurer's Guild, the atmosphere was still tense—but hopeful.

"Mission success," Garrick reported.

Brunhilde smiled faintly.

"Well done."

She handed over their reward.

As Kael and Draven received their share, Brunhilde added:

"There's another urgent mission."

Kael looked up.

"Where?"

"Vegetable fields outside the city. Lizard-men are destroying food supplies."

Garrick turned to his team.

"We're taking it."

Then he looked at Kael and Draven.

"You two. Join us again."

Kael nodded without hesitation. "We're in."

Battle in the Fields

By the time they arrived, evening shadows stretched across the ruined land.

The fields were destroyed.

Crops trampled.

Soil soaked.

Draven clenched his fist. "They wiped everything…"

Lizard-men still lingered.

Garrick raised his sword.

"Attack."

This battle was different.

More chaotic.

More relentless.

Kael charged forward.

His movements were fluid—instinctive.

Sword. Kick. Slash.

He fought like a storm.

Draven covered him.

"Behind you!""Left side!"

Arrows flew precisely when needed.

Kael didn't stop—even when wounded.

Garrick watched.

"…His stamina…" he muttered.

Silas grinned."This guy's insane."

At one point—

Lyra was about to be stabbed.

Kael intercepted instantly.

"Watch your back!"

Brom stepped in to protect Kael moments later.

"Don't overextend!"

The teamwork was seamless.

Rhen joined Draven, their arrows creating a deadly rhythm.

Garrick and Kael fought side by side.

Strike after strike.

Enemy after enemy.

Even after sunset—they held their ground.

Until—

Silence.

All Lizard-men defeated.

Recognition

Everyone stood exhausted.

Garrick looked at Kael and Draven.

"You two did well."

Silas smirked."Better than expected."

Lyra smiled faintly."You've proven yourselves."

Garrick nodded.

"You'll become well-known adventurers one day."

Kael bowed slightly. "Thank you."

Draven grinned. "We'll make sure of it."

Return and Rest

Back at the guild, they received their reward.

Goodbyes were exchanged.

And finally—

Kael and Draven returned home.

Too tired to cook.

Too tired to think.

They ate raw vegetables.

Collapsed.

And slept.

The Next Morning

Pain.

Every muscle screamed.

Kael groaned. "I feel like I got run over…"

Draven nodded. "Same."

They bathed.

Cooked a simple meal.

Bread and curry.

Warm. Comforting.

As they ate, silence filled the room.

Not awkward—

Peaceful.

After everything…

They needed it.

Kael leaned back.

"…We'll rest till afternoon."

Draven nodded. "Yeah."

Later, they sharpened their weapons.

Checked their potions.

Prepared quietly.

Because deep down—

They both knew.

This war wasn't over.
