Chapter 21 - Item of His Choice

'This is the only thing in there that seemed to fit the criteria but at the same time I am not sure. I just hope I made the right decision.'

Kurao was inwardly anxious as he was walking down the blue hue lit corridor with Vayla who had a slight frown that wasn't very noticeable in the dimly lit corridor. While he was clenching a book that he choose to take from the Emperor's Treasury.

A Few Minutes Earlier....

"Aunt Vayla I have made my decision." Kurao said with almost unnoticeable shaky arms that were gripping a book.

Hearing that he has made his decision, Vayla got up after spending hours mostly bounded to the chair and looked toward him as she stretches her arms in the air releasing a slight relaxed sigh before addressing him in a curious tone.

"Is that so little Kurao, what did you decide on?"

Kurao was a slightly nervous, but already finalized his decision in his head and decided to carry out his choice.

"I decided that I want to keep take this book!"

Kurao said slightly raising his voice while looking at Vayla to see her expression as he pushed the book forward so it was visible for her to see it. Kurao wouldn't be to concerned about what Vayla thought about his decision, but upon learning that this whole thing might be a test setup by his father to see what type of thing he would claim out of the treasury he started to get nervous and took way more time to make extra sure he was confident with his choice.

Vayla stared at the book that was slightly shaking in the boy's hands and saw that the title was the indecipherable text that her husband had on their shelves, seeing the book she raised a brow and asked a bit skeptical in his decision.

"Are you sure that you want that unreadable book little Kurao? Cause once you leave you can't comeback to change your item. Once you leave that's the item you claimed from here."

"Yes, I have made my choice on this matter and can't be deterred." Kurao quickly responded his hands not shaking anymore and his voice sound not as nervous.

Vayla just stares at the boy for a moment in complete silence making him slightly anxious.

She then breaks her stare by glancing at the book before frowning and shaking her head.

Turning around facing towards the dark corridor she snaps her fingers as the dim blue lanterns ablaze again.

"Okay then if that's your choice lets head out." Vayla says not even turning around to face Kurao as she starts walking towards the treasury entrance.

Back To The Present....

While Vayla walks down the narrow corridor, she delves into her thoughts about Kurao's choice.

'Why would he choose that unreadable book instead of literally anything else. It doesn't make much sense to pick a book with no use except for maybe a conversation piece, instead of something that could even provide you a boost in skills, talent, or even knowledge?'

She was a bit upset, not so much for his attitude for the past few hours, but for the fact he

chose such an item out of everything in the room. She cared about Kurao and didn't like to see him waste such an opportunity on such a useless paper brick.

Kurao who saw that she was keeping silent during the walk back to her room with a frown, decided to try to break the silent walk seemingly knowing what she was thinking.

"Well even if its unreadable it will be fun for me to try and decipher it and gain its untold powers, who knows it could have the secrets to take me to the Grandmaster Level."

Kurao said trying to joke a little bit about how his decision could maybe make him amongst the 'highest existences' in Etheria. Vayla who heard him didn't stop but all she could think was,

'Kurao you are a smart kid I don't know why you picked such a unintelligible book.'

Thinking this she sighs before saying something to Kurao, knowing that he was still nervous over his 'foolish' choice.

"Kurao don't dwell on your choice that much, even without picking anything from your father's treasury I know that you will make it to Grandmaster if you put your mind to it."

Vayla said confidently knowing that with Kurao's magical talent and intellect, that he will be able to achieve the rank of a Grandmaster.

Kurao's heart warmed up with gratitude over Vayla's words. He was happy with the encouraging words, but he knew that there was something groundbreaking in the book.

'If I can decipher the book and find what all these passages mean and how to replicate some of the revolutionary ideas that it contained I could propose them to father, and if the ideas are that useful I don't doubt he wouldn't let me access his treasury again to pick out another item or even more!'

Kurao was inwardly grinning over his choice and now left all the regret he had before for choosing the book behind.

After walking out of the corridor Vayla pulls out the key from before and circulates mana through it. Kurao sees the wall that had the corridor behind it slowly cover up as if there was no passage behind it.

Kurao stares at the wall for a moment before turning to Vayla and giving a slight bow.

"Thank you Aunt Vayla for take the time to accompany me."

"Little Kurao if you want to pay back the time I spent accompanying you, why don't you come visit soon? I haven't seen much of you since you awakened and I know little Elyse misses playing with you."

Vayla gave a warm smile feeling a little heartened over the small gesture and decided to slightly tease the kid.

"Plus if you come and visit we can discuss a setting up a potential meeting between you and your little fiancé."

Kurao face scrunched up a little bit hearing the word 'fiancé', but decided to not say anymore knowing that she would most likely tease him more about it.

"I wish to go say goodnight to my mother before she falls asleep, sooooo I am gonna leave. Goodnight Aunt Vayla."

Saying this Kurao waves his hand and leaving the empresses' room while clenching the book.
