Chapter 14 - Shadow on the Board

The glass tower of the EL Group headquarters held a commanding view of the city's financial district, but inside the corner office, the atmosphere was quiet, cool, and strictly business.

Chrystlene sat behind her sleek mahogany desk, a porcelain cup of dark tea steaming lightly near her elbow. Her dark hair was pulled back into a sharp, flawless twist, held in place by a silver pin. Spread out before her were three screens displaying market indices, land registries, and maritime transit logs.

Jurianna's father officially surrendered the warehousing shares this morning at eight, Chrysty noted from their shared mind space, her voice light with satisfaction. Second Uncle tried to call Grandfather three times to complain, but Grandfather blocked his number.

A predictable response, Chrystlene thought back, her eyes steadily scanning a financial report. When a weak player loses their position, they cry to authority. But Grandfather understands that in this era—just like in mine—a business empire cannot survive on sentimentality. Strength demands results.

A quiet chime rang from the desk intercom.

"Miss Chrystlene," her assistant's voice came through crisply. "Mr. Vanguard is here for the scheduled ten o'clock logistics review. He has brought a guest with him."

Chrystlene's eyebrow arched slightly. "A guest?"

"Yes, Miss. Mr. Julian Vance of Vanguard Security Solutions."

Julian Vance? Chrysty murmured, searching through her memories of modern business news. Oh! That's Roy's younger half-brother. He manages the physical intelligence and security operations for Vanguard International. He rarely attends corporate strategy meetings.

"Send them in," Chrystlene said smoothly.

The double doors swung open. Roy entered first, looking as formidable as ever in a tailored navy suit. His posture was upright, his dark eyes instantly locking onto Chrystlene with that familiar, steady focus that had become his trademark over the past few weeks.

Behind him walked a slightly younger man who shared his sharp jawline, but carried a completely different energy. Julian Vance wore a dark gray suit with the top button unfastened, his tie slightly loosened in a way that looked effortlessly casual yet calculated. Unlike Roy's heavy, quiet presence, Julian moved with a fluid, cat-like lightness. His eyes—a lighter, piercing hazel—swept over the office in half a second, taking in every exit, camera, and detail before landing squarely on Chrystlene.

"Chrystlene," Roy greeted, his deep voice carrying a quiet warmth as he stepped up to her desk. "I hope we aren't interrupting."

"Not at all, Roy," Chrystlene replied, standing up with effortless grace. She smoothed down the front of her tailored charcoal trousers. "You're right on time."

"This is my brother, Julian," Roy said, turning slightly. "He handles our specialized security assessments. Given the aggressive moves your Second Uncle made regarding the regional ports, I asked Julian to audit our joint transit routes."

Julian stepped forward, extending a hand. A slow, intriguing smirk played at the corner of his lips as he looked at her. "Miss EL. I've heard quite a bit about you over the past forty-eight hours. Roy doesn't usually talk about business partners during family dinners, but lately, your name seems to come up in every third sentence."

Roy glanced at his brother with a subtle, warning narrow of his eyes. "Julian."

Chrystlene accepted the handshake, her grip firm, cool, and professional. She didn't miss the sharp curiosity in Julian's eyes, nor did she miss the subtle tension that flickered between the two brothers.

"It's a pleasure, Mr. Vance," Chrystlene said, her tone perfectly even, devoid of any flirtatious encouragement. "I appreciate Vanguard International taking security so seriously, though I assure you, my internal security protocols are already well established."

"I don't doubt it," Julian said smoothly, releasing her hand slowly. He didn't take his eyes off her, his head tilting slightly as he studied her face. "Anyone who can pull a thirty-year-old federal clearance out of thin air to crush a thirty-two-million-dollar land trap clearly doesn't need much help. But physical security is a different game than corporate strategy, Miss EL. And I'm very good at physical security."

Well, Chrysty chimed in, leaning forward in their mind space with wide eyes. He's certainly bold! He's looking at you like you're an intriguing puzzle he wants to solve.

Chrystlene remained entirely unbothered. Romance, suitors, and subtle flirting were the absolute lowest priorities on her list. In her past life as a general, she had seen men attempt to win her favor with charming words and grand gestures even her ex fiancee had to woo her for 3 years before she finally agreed to get engaged with him but none of it matters anymore, not on a battlefield, and certainly not here. Her mind was focused on one thing: absolute control over the EL Group and securing her position in this modern world.

"Then let's see what your audit revealed, Mr. Vance," Chrystlene said calmly, gesturing toward the conference table near the window. "Please, sit."

The meeting lasted over an hour. As Roy outlined the updated shipping schedules for the northern maritime corridor, Julian presented a detailed security map highlighting potential vulnerabilities along the ground transport lines.

Despite his casual posture, Julian's intelligence was undeniable. He pointed out three specific arterial roads where cargo trucks could be ambushed or delayed by rival factions linked to Second Uncle's allies.

"If we reroute the secondary convoys through the eastern bypass," Julian explained, leaning over the glass table, his hazel eyes flickering toward Chrystlene, "we eliminate eighty percent of the choke points. I can personally oversee the first three runs to make sure there are no incidents."

"That won't be necessary," Chrystlene said, her dark eyes looking straight into his. Her tone was friendly, polite, but distinctly cool—a firm boundary painted in ice. "The EL Group's private transport team is fully capable of handling ground security once the routes are cleared. You've provided an excellent tactical report, Mr. Vance, but we will manage the execution internally."

Julian blinked, surprised by her immediate, calm rejection of his personal involvement. Most heiresses in high society scrambled for an excuse to keep a Vanguard close to them. Yet Chrystlene treated his offer like an unnecessary line item in a budget report.

A subtle smirk returned to Julian's face, though his eyes held a newfound, genuine respect. "Independent. I like that."

Roy, sitting beside them, let out a quiet breath. The sharp tension in his shoulders seemed to ease slightly, though his gaze remained fixed on Chrystlene with profound, steady admiration. He didn't need to mark his territory or compete with his brother's sudden interest; he knew Chrystlene was not a woman to be won over by cheap charm or aggressive pursuit. She was a fortress, built on logic, strength, and sharp independence.

"Julian's report is solid," Roy said softly, breaking the silence. "We will adjust the transport lines according to the eastern bypass, but leave the execution to your internal team as you requested."

"Thank you, Roy," Chrystlene said, offering him a small, genuine nod of appreciation.

Julian leaned back in his chair, folding his arms. "Well, since the business portion of the morning is wrapped up... Miss EL, would you care to join me for lunch? There's a quiet French bistro near the marina that serves exceptional espresso."

Direct attack! Chrysty gasped in their mind space. He didn't even wait for Roy to leave the room!

Chrystlene didn't flinch. She picked up her tablet, syncing the new transport files with a light tap of her finger.

"Thank you for the invitation, Mr. Vance," she said smoothly, looking up with a polite, professional smile that carried zero warmth. "However, my schedule for the remainder of the day is entirely packed with internal board reviews. Perhaps another time, when business demands it."

It was a classic, flawless refusal—polite enough not to offend a powerful partner, but clear enough to let him know that personal invitations were off the table.

Julian stared at her for a second, then broke into a low, amused laugh. "Business demands it. Right. I'll hold you to that, Miss EL." He stood up, smoothing down his jacket. "Roy, I'll take the security draft back to the main office."

"I'll join you shortly," Roy said, not standing up just yet.

Julian gave Chrystlene a lingering nod. "A pleasure meeting you, Chrystlene. I have a feeling we're going to see a lot of each other."

With that, he turned and strolled out of the office, his light footsteps receding down the hallway.

Once the heavy oak doors shut, silence settled back over the office.

Roy remained seated across from Chrystlene. The afternoon sun filtered through the tinted glass, casting warm golden light across the polished wood table between them.

"My brother can be somewhat... persistent," Roy said quiet, his deep voice rich and calm. "If his presence makes you uncomfortable, I can have Mark handle all future security briefings personally."

Chrystlene looked at Roy. Unlike his brother, Roy didn't try to crowd her space or push for personal lunches under the guise of casual charm. He simply sat there, offering a quiet, unshakeable support while completely respecting her boundaries.

"He doesn't make me uncomfortable, Roy," Chrystlene said, resting her forearms lightly on the table. "He's observant and capable. But I don't have time for distraction right now. The EL Group is still in a delicate transition, and Second Uncle is not the only threat sitting in the shadows."

Roy nodded slowly, his dark eyes softening. "I understand. Your focus is where it needs to be."

He really gets it, Chrysty whispered softly, her spirit watching Roy with a gentle smile. He doesn't pressure you. He just stands by your side and lets you set the pace.

Chrystlene felt a quiet, subtle warmth in her chest—not the rushing, overwhelming emotion of romance, but the steady, solid feeling of finding a true ally who understood her discipline. She had no desire to plunge into love or romance; her heart was guarded, forged in the fires of past battles and deep betrayals. But Roy Vanguard was proving, day by day, that he was content to simply walk beside her without demanding anything in return.

"The board meeting is in twenty minutes," Chrystlene noted, looking up at him with a calm, steady gaze. "Will Vanguard International be attending the quarterly summit on Friday?"

Roy stood up smoothly, reaching down to button his jacket. He looked down at her, a rare, breathtakingly soft smile touching his lips.

"If you are going to be there, Chrystlene," Roy said quietly, his voice low and firm, "then Vanguard International wouldn't miss it for the world."

Chrystlene offered him a small, controlled smile—a quiet acknowledgment between two titans.

"I'll see you on Friday, Roy."

"Friday," he murmured, bowing his head slightly before turning to walk out of the office, leaving Chrystlene alone in the quiet strength of her domain.
