Chapter 42 - The Faucet

Last night I was sitting on my couch watching tv. It was late into the night, around 12 am. It was a Friday. As I was watching, dozing in and out of sleep, I heard the small trickle of water. It sounded like the sink but not all the way turned on or off. I got up to check the noise. I went into the bathroom and strangely enough the sink was on. It was a small soft trickle as if I accidentally left on the water. That was odd though, considering I haven't used the restroom in over an hour. Why would I just notice the sound now? It was quite late and I tend to be a bit lazy on weekends so I simply turned it off before getting back onto the couch to continue my show. I was dozing off again when I heard the trickle of water again. It was fully on, but it sounded louder than it did before. A cold sweat fell over me as I walked back into the bathroom to see water trickling out of the sink on a higher setting. This didn't make any sense. I hadn't used the bathroom. Why would the sink be on? It's not motion detected, it requires a physical hand to pick the lever up. Suddenly I realized that something was wrong. I live alone. I turn off the faucet and go check the doors to make sure it was locked. It was. I must have been imagining things. I'm not sure how but I must have. I walked around to check all the windows but there was no sign of movement, everything was the same as it had been and the windows were still locked. As I was leaving a room after checking the windows I heard the faucet again. It was completely turned on this time. I had been walking around so I knew I was fully awake. I knew there was no way I was imagining things. Horror struck me. I remain frozen in place. Then suddenly it started turning on and off. The water. "Swish" "Stop" "Swish" "Stop" It kept going. It was driving me crazy. I rushed into the bathroom with a bat I had grabbed from my room for defense but I saw that the faucet was turned off again. I then looked at the mirror. It was foggy. It looked the way it did after I took a hot shower. How could that be, though I hardly forced on that fact. I could only notice the words drawn into the mirror, which looked to have been done by fingers. It said with a messy and odd handwriting, "Were all of the windows really unlocked?" And I realized as I slowly turned my head, that I forgot to check the bathroom window.
