Chapter 6 - Madness

"I met a woman in my dreams, Violet. She was the most intelligent and funny person I had ever met. She had a wit that left me tongue-tied and her laugh at my dumbfounded expression whenever she tripped me up made me feel being her fool was not so bad," the man said with a rare happy smile on his face which revealed that he had been very handsome when he was younger. " the dream was a lifetime as I got to know her, grew with her and built a life with her. In some ways the dream felt more real than my life ever had before that point and the emptiness I always felt was filled in that life I lived with her. Every laugh, every stolen kiss, and every passionate embrace made me alive. We studied divinity together and the way it could be harnessed and used and she inspired me more than anyone I had ever known even Einstein or my own great grandfather the great Nhlanhla Black the III," the smile on the man's face started fading as his dark brooding expression returned. "I wonder at the magic of dreams that allows them to warp our perception of time, all the years, the life I spent with her faded to nothing as I woke up lying on the floor of my garage lab where I had drunk myself unconscious in my depression the previous night. I felt so sick however I also felt a clarity I had not felt in years," the man's voice took on an angry tone as he reached this part of his testimony.

"I could not reconcile my feelings from that dream as simply a figment of my own drunk state but I rationalised it as some sick inspiration towards my obsession. I needed the energy of the higher powers that controlled the Multiverse, I needed divinity or the energy of faith. I needed to harness it ."

Nan began using the inspirations from his dreams to capture divinity and harness it to make liquefied divinity, ichor and with this as an unlimited fuel craft the golden timepiece he came to use to this day. the day he opened his first successful portal was glorious and the first world he found was Earth 1. Something compelled him to hide his discovery and go to this new world. It was different from the world he knew. Religion was used to separate people and oppress them. They failed to recognize the things they all had in common. Atrocities powered by discrimination peppered this world's history and his home was known by a different name in this world. Its technology was centuries behind his own world. His country had another name here. It was called Zimbabwe. He went searching for people he knew and found them so different from those he knew, his best friend Wayne was an accountant!!! The wonder he felt. What truly blew his mind was when he finally gathered the courage to find the version of himself in that world. It was man wholly different from himself. He was happy in this world and he had 'her'.

It was the woman, his Violet. She was just as beautiful as he remembered and in other aspects even more so. In Earth 1 they had been together since their youth and their love was written in the stars. He wondered if she existed in his world and that curiosity pushed him to return and search for her. He never found her.

She had never existed in his world and he was crushed. He went looking for her in the multiverse and made a terrible discovery. She existed in other worlds too. He found her in 1 out of every 5 worlds he traveled to and the crazy part was that when he found her she was with a version of him and they were happy. No matter how different the worlds were, no matter how different the versions of him were, where she existed, he was with her. He started looking for worlds where he existed and she did not. He found none.

In every reality where versions of him were born, he would end up loving and being with versions her. He did not understand it and so he kept searching and searching for years until one day when he dreamed of 'her' again. It was the version of her he had met years before. It was like she was guiding him to her. When he woke up he began searching with renewed vigor and building madness. He often hallucinated her and had conversations with her. And thus he became a wanderer and the years went and he became older and more bitter as he saw versions of him find love while he failed to do so.

Nan wandered worlds in hopes of finding the Violet of his dreams, he became convinced that his Violet was out there waiting. At the point when his obsession, loneliness, and dream-induced madness hit their peak, he committed the greatest taboo. He tried to steal the life of one of his doppelgangers. He committed his first murder and tried to steal this happiness. Unfortunately, through a cruel twist of fate Violet instinctively felt like he was not her love. She went mad unable to understand how he could stand beside her and not be the man she loved to death. Seeing her broken due to his actions only increased his guilt and grief and he fled, a wanderer once more as his madness cleared away almost by magic. In his mindless searching, he found a world that had tales of a divine oracle blessed with knowledge beyond mortals. He sought her out on an impulse. What he found out is what changed the trajectory of his life and sent him to this moment in the court of the most high.
