Anna shook her head, her voice breaking. "Complicated or not, you've made your preference. I can't stay here and watch you being together with her. It's too much."
Nathan's heart ached. "Anna, please. We can find a way to make this work. You don't need to leave."
She looked at him with an unhappy smile, her eyes full of a combination of affection and heartbreak. "Nathan, I can't stay in a place where I'm not welcomed. Where I'm not loved the way I want to. I need to discover my own direction now."
Nathan felt a deep experience of loss as she spoke, understanding there was nothing he might want to say to change her mind. "I'm so sorry, Anna," he whispered.
Anna nodded, wiping her tears. "Me too, Nathan. Me too."
