The night air clung to my skin, thick and heavy with the smell of rain-soaked pavement. My heels clicked against the ground as I walked faster, every muscle in my body screaming to get away from him.

That man was nothing but trouble. Trouble dressed in charm, trouble with a smile that made your stomach flip even when you told yourself you hated him. Trouble with hands that gripped too tight and lips that…

I bit my lip hard, trying to erase the memory of that kiss he'd stolen. My chest burned with shame. I didn't want that. I didn't want him.

But my pulse betrayed me. The echo of his touch still lingered like sparks under my skin.

"Cassie, wait!" His voice rang out behind me, deep, commanding. The kind of voice that made people stop whether they wanted to or not.

I didn't stop. If anything, I moved faster, practically jogging now as I reached the corner where the alley opened into the main road.

And then his hand caught mine.
