Chapter 56 - Part 55

The phone rang again, this time more urgently. The shrill tone cut through the room like a knife, making my pulse quicken. Mara had already crossed the room, her eyes narrowing in calculation. She didn't hesitate—she was used to this, used to living in the chaos we had created. But me? I could feel the weight of every decision settling in.

I moved toward the desk where the phone sat, but Mara was already there, picking it up. Her fingers brushed over the screen, and the instant she saw the caller ID, her expression hardened.

"It's them," she said, her voice low, almost drowned in the rising tension.

I swallowed hard. "What do we do?"

She didn't respond immediately. Her mind was working, shifting through a thousand scenarios, calculating every move. Finally, she put the phone on speaker and placed it down between us.

The voice on the other end was smooth, professional, but there was an edge to it. A hint of a threat buried deep within the words.

"Mara. Psychobi. I hope you're both comfortable where you are," the voice said, with a calmness that made my skin crawl. "We've been watching you. Every step, every move. You can't hide anymore. The files? Cute little stunt, but it's already starting to lose its power. People are starting to look away. You think you're the only ones who can control the narrative?"

I could feel my chest tighten. This wasn't some random agent or low-level enforcer—it was someone higher up. Someone who knew exactly what we were doing and how to dismantle it piece by piece.

Mara leaned in closer to the phone, her eyes flashing. "You're wrong. The world isn't turning away. They can't. It's too big now. The truth is already out, and it's too late to put the genie back in the bottle. People will keep pushing it."

The voice chuckled, low and mocking. "Mara, Mara, Mara. Always so sure of yourself. You've overestimated the power of a few documents. You're playing a dangerous game, and you're losing."

I could feel the panic building in my chest, but I forced myself to remain calm. I glanced at Mara, who was standing perfectly still, her gaze fixed on the phone as if she were daring them to take the next step.

"You think this is a game?" she said, her voice sharp. "We're past the point of no return. You've underestimated us. I won't let you bury this. We won't back down."

The silence that followed felt like it lasted for hours. Then, the voice came again, smooth as ever, but this time it carried a coldness that sent a chill down my spine.

"You've made a mistake, Mara," the voice said, almost casually. "A very big mistake. And it's not just you we'll be dealing with. We're coming for everything. Your friends. Your family. The ones who helped you. Everyone."

I felt the blood drain from my face. This wasn't just a threat—it was a warning. They had resources, power, and influence that we couldn't even begin to imagine. They could destroy everything we had built with a single move.

Mara didn't flinch. "Do your worst," she replied, her voice steady, but beneath the surface, I could sense a ripple of something darker. "We'll be waiting."

The voice chuckled again, but this time there was no humor in it. "You think you're the ones who control the narrative? Let's see how well you do when it all falls apart. Enjoy the little victory while you can, because it's only a matter of time."

The call ended abruptly.

I stood there, the weight of the words hanging in the air like a thick fog. The world outside hadn't changed, not yet, but I knew that everything had just escalated. The threat was real. We were no longer just fighting for the truth; we were fighting for our survival.

Mara picked up the phone, staring at it for a moment before putting it down. "We can't stay here anymore."

The words hit me like a cold slap. I had been hoping for more time, more room to breathe. But the game had shifted. We were no longer operating in the shadows, hoping to expose the truth without getting caught. Now, the world was watching, and so were they.

Mara walked toward the door, moving quickly, but every step was measured. "We need to move. Fast. We can't give them any more chances to track us. We'll lose our edge if we do."

I followed her, heart pounding, thoughts spinning. "Where are we going?"

She paused for just a moment, eyes scanning the room as if searching for something we had missed. "We're going to take this to the next level. We can't hide anymore. We've got to go on the offensive."

I swallowed hard. I knew what she meant. We couldn't wait for them to come to us. We needed to strike first. We needed to control the narrative, not just expose it.

And with that realization, the weight of what we were about to do hit me all at once.

Mara turned to me, her face hard, but I could see the flicker of determination behind her eyes. "We're going to burn it all down."

I nodded, though a part of me recoiled at the thought. But I knew there was no other way now. We had crossed the line, and there was no turning back.

We couldn't just fight against the system anymore. We had to become a part of the revolution. And that meant embracing the chaos, the violence, and the destruction that would come with it.

We gathered our things quickly—there was no time to waste. I felt my fingers tremble as I packed up the laptop, the documents, the weapons. Every move felt like the beginning of something irreversible, and yet, there was no other choice.

Mara didn't look back. She was already at the door, eyes focused on the next step. The next phase of the plan.

She threw open the door and stepped out into the cold morning air. "Let's go."

I followed her into the darkness, my mind racing. Whatever happened next, there was no going back.

We were about to set the world on fire.
