On October 9, the court ordered the arrest of Bogue and his companions on charges of rebellion and assaulting the police.

Police came to arrest him but were repelled by nearby residents.

A few days later, Bogue and his companions, armed with wooden sticks and machetes, came to St. Thomas Square in the city to demonstrate.

Soon after, they encountered soldiers on the courthouse steps.

Seven protesters were killed on the spot.

That night, the angry crowd set fire to the courthouse building, spreading to nearby residences.

A dozen officials were killed. The authorities were furious and retaliation began immediately.

At that time, Edward El, the Governor of Jamaica, immediately convened a wartime committee and declared martial law in the eastern part of Jamaica Island.
