Steve McGarrett, a former U.S. Navy SEAL major, graduated from the Annapolis Naval Academy. After serving five years in naval intelligence and six years in the SEALs, he was praised by his superiors as an exceptionally talented operative.
Six months ago, during a transport mission in South Korea's Pohang, Steve was tasked with escorting a high-value terrorist suspect. Meanwhile, Victor, the suspect's brother, infiltrated Steve's Hawaiian home and took his retired father, John McGarrett, a former Honolulu police officer, hostage. Victor hoped to use this leverage to force Steve into releasing his brother.
However, the plan fell apart when John McGarrett, held at gunpoint, resolutely told his son over the phone not to comply with any of Victor's demands. Enraged by his failure, Victor shot and killed Steve's father. Devastated by the loss of his father and the failure of the mission—during which Victor's brother was killed while attempting to escape—Steve returned home, determined to hunt Victor down.
During his father's funeral, the governor of Hawaii approached Steve with a proposal. He offered Steve the opportunity to retire and form a special task force under the governor's direct command, focusing on tackling violent crime and terrorism in the Hawaiian Islands.
The first person Steve recruited for his task force was Danny Williams, a detective recently transferred from New Jersey to Honolulu. Danny had moved to Hawaii reluctantly, following his ex-wife and young daughter, Grace, after they relocated to be with her new husband. Danny despised the laid-back Hawaiian lifestyle, as evidenced by his persistent habit of wearing suits and ties, in stark contrast to the local penchant for floral shirts. Nevertheless, his devotion to his daughter was the driving force behind his move.
At the time, Danny was leading the investigation into John McGarrett's murder. Steve, armed with the governor's authority, enlisted Danny as his first team member.
The task force later expanded to include two more members: Chin Ho Kelly, a former subordinate and protégé of John McGarrett, as well as a high school classmate of Steve; and Kono Kalakaua, Chin's cousin. Interestingly, Kono's Japanese name baffled many, given her apparent Korean lineage—perhaps a lingering quirk from World War II-era ties.
Kono eventually married Adam, the son of Hawaii's largest Yakuza syndicate boss. The bizarre connections within the team led some online communities to nickname them the "Hawaii Five-0 Bromance Squad."
Despite its unconventional roster, the task force quickly proved itself formidable in Honolulu. Reporting directly to the governor, the team wielded extraordinary authority. In the U.S. federal system, state governors have significant powers, akin to mini-presidents within their jurisdictions. The governor assured Steve, "You set the rules, and I'll give you all the support you need. No red tape, no games—just take down the criminals, no matter the cost."
This unwavering support allowed the task force privileges akin to a hybrid of the Ming Dynasty's secret police and imperial guards. They could mobilize local police and even the National Guard. Their access to military-grade weaponry, such as AR-15 carbines, highlighted their mission's seriousness: combating violent crime and terrorism with near-unrestricted authority.
When Richard Castle learned from Jarvis that his daughter was safe but held captive in Hawaii, he decided to seize this opportunity. Instead of merely rescuing his daughter, he intended to use the situation to dismantle the Japanese intelligence network operating in Hawaii. Castle's plan was simple: leverage the intelligence gathered from his daughter's kidnapping to expose and obliterate the "Internal Adjustment" agents and their Yakuza collaborators.
Castle reasoned that merely rescuing his daughter wouldn't suffice. If he didn't inflict significant damage on those who dared target his family, they'd remain emboldened. Therefore, he aimed to strike hard enough to hurt the enemy deeply and permanently.
Castle stayed in New York to oversee the operation remotely. According to Neil and Mozzie's plan, while the rescue unfolded in Hawaii, Castle would use his influence in New York to undermine the Japanese. One of his strategies involved exposing the underhanded tactics of Watanabe Taro, a Japanese delegate whose primary mission in the U.S. was to procure advanced American military technology. Castle intended to reveal the delegate's attempts to kidnap shareholders of major defense contractors like Northrop, G.E., and Pratt & Whitney. By bringing this to light in Congress and the media, Castle could complicate Japan's efforts and levy substantial costs on their operations.
Simultaneously, Castle provided the Hawaii Five-0 task force with intelligence to dismantle the Japanese spy network entrenched in Hawaii since World War II. The dual-pronged approach was designed to inflict maximum damage.
After confirming with Jarvis that his daughter remained unharmed, Castle finalized the operation details with Neil and Mozzie. He then called Steve McGarrett directly.
Steve, relaxing at his beachfront home, was astonished by the call. Castle introduced himself and revealed the identities of his daughter's captors: Japanese intelligence operatives seeking classified military technology. Castle offered Steve a deal—assist in rescuing his daughter, and he would provide intelligence to dismantle the Japanese spy network in Hawaii.
Skeptical, Steve quickly searched the Navy Intelligence database for Richard Castle's profile. To his surprise, Castle wasn't just a renowned New York author but also a shareholder in several defense contractors. Moreover, some of the military's latest drone and missile technologies were linked to Castle's companies.
As Steve's search confirmed Castle's credibility, Castle, monitoring the situation through Jarvis, knew he had piqued the SEAL's interest. The compelling combination of justice and strategic advantage made the proposal impossible for Steve to ignore. Even without the promise of dismantling a spy network, the kidnapping alone would compel Steve to act—it was, after all, a heinous crime within his jurisdiction.
