A month had passed since the tragedy that shattered Kady's world. Losing her mother left her hollow in ways she hadn't been prepared for. Their relationship had always been complicated, strained, messy, full of sharp edges and silences. But beneath all of it, Kady knew her mother had loved her. And she had loved her back even more so. That's what made it cut so deep. Love, no matter how imperfect, still bled when torn away. And now she had no one left.

The one responsible? Marina. That blue-eyed viper bitch, always slithering into people's lives and leaving ruin in her wake and forcing everyone to do whatever the fuck she wanted regardless of what it does to them. And Julia, Julia had been the trigger, the spark that made the whole thing go off. But Marina was the real reason her mother was dead, and Kady's grief burned into anger so raw it nearly consumed her. She had gone after Marina, reckless and blinded, more of a suicide mission than vengeance truth be told. And if not for the man who stopped her, she would have died trying.

Richard.

He had seen her broken, wild-eyed, charging toward certain death, and he pulled her back from the edge. Talked her down, steadied her when no one else could because hey there was absolutely no one else who could at that point… well there was one but he's probably too pissed off to even want to see her face.

Richard had introduced her to others, people like her. Magicians with impossible talents. Silver, who could literally fly to the moon if she chose. Bender, a genius in cooperative magic. And Menolly, powerful in her own right but also fighting a losing battle with breast cancer.

It was the cruelest irony: all the magic in the world, and still nothing they could do to cure something so human, so raw. Magic couldn't touch it, not at their level. That's when Richard revealed his plan.

There were only a few places in existence where that kind of power, the kind that could heal and accomplish anything actually existed. The Source. Or as Richard bluntly put it, the gods themselves.

Kady thought it sounded insane. Arrogant and almost impossible. And yet, the more Richard spoke about it the more it made sense and not to mention everyone else believed in him. Even she wanted to believe but it was a matter of faith and frankly she was low in that.

That's where Anya's faith came in. Anya, who Richard had saved from overdosing after a traveler spell with her boyfriend went seriously wrong, ripping her boyfriend apart across her apartment in a horrific accident. They were living in that very same apartment right now.

'Yeah, fantastic,' Kady thought bitterly.

Now, their search for a way to get in contact had turned to the only living sources left in the world, the children of the gods the magical creatures. That's what Richard called them. Find a way to contact one, summon one. More specifically the Lady Underground. And to Kady's surprise something happened to Anya and they were directed to the man under the bridge. The Man Under the Bridge himself gave them the invocation they needed after they met him.

But he hadn't just given them the spell. He gave them a warning, too. A warning that unsettled her more than she wanted to admit. 'Why give us the power to call on the Lady Underground, and then warn us to be careful who we call?'

She pushed the thought aside. "Whatever," she muttered.

Anya, walking beside her, frowned. "What?"

"Nothing. Let's just go. We've got what we came for."

'Well then,' Kady thought grimly, 'let's go summon a god.'

Just as the thought crossed her mind, a soft whoosh cut through the air.

Anya stiffened. "What was that?"

Kady's brow furrowed. "Must be the wind."

But a few streets away, a man stood watching them, lips curling into a smile.

"Found you."

Back at the Physical Kids' cottage, Julia sat in the backyard, frustration etched into her face. A half-empty bottle of beer dangled loosely in her hand until she set it aside and stood.

"Okay, stop. Stop. This isn't working."

The others quieted down. Eliot stretched lazily and moved to his chair and said, "Maybe it's not the spell, maybe it's the way you're teaching it."

Margo smirked and chimed in, "I agree. So, Jules. Not everyone is cut out to be a hit teacher, so how exactly did Kai teach you, anyway?"

Quentin shot them both a look. "Guys, she's trying. Cut her some slack."

Penny groaned under his breath, while Alice leaned forward, her tone softer. "Julia, maybe just… show us again?"

Julia sighed and nodded, brushing back her hair as she moved toward a stand with an empty bottle. "Alright. So Kai told me to stop just riding along the with the magic around us. You can just grab a thread and yes it'll work but that's not how he does his spells. First, you need to take in the energy. Hold it. Make it yours." She turned, her hand hovering over the bottle. "Then, you mold it. Shape it with your will. Only then do you release it back out into the world as an expression of your will."

Quentin frowned. "Wait, why do we have to hold it in? Isn't that… dangerous?"

Julia's eyes flicked to him. "Because otherwise, the magic owns you. This way you own it in which case you'll always be dependent on it."

Alice crossed her arms. "But that takes too long."

"Practice makes perfect," Julia shot back, before her focus sharpened on the bottle.

She pointed at the bottle. "Motus."

A sharp wave of force erupted, sending the bottle hurtling across the yard where it shattered against a tree. Julia turned back, calm but defiant. "See?"

Penny snorted. "Yeah, cool trick. That's a bottle. What about a real target?"

Before she could answer, he vanished in a flash, reappearing just a few feet from her. And Julia didn't hesitate. Her palm snapped up, and another Motus spell exploded, throwing Penny backward into the grass.

"Fuck," he groaned, rolling onto his side.

Alice rushed to him. "Penny!"

"What the hell, Julia?!" Margo snapped, eyes wide.

But Julia stood firm, lowering her hand. "Strong enough for you?"

Penny groaned again but managed to chuckle despite the ache. "Yeah… yeah, okay."

Eliot whistled low, rising to his feet. "Alright then bitches. Let's fucking do this."
