"...honestly, Elliot, if we don't find a way to deep-fry these motherfucking traitors with concentrated light soon, I am going to lose my royal shit!"
The voice was unmistakably Margo, sharp enough to cut diamonds and twice as hard.
Josh jumped, clutching his head. "Jesus! Who said that? Why is Margo shouting in my brain? Is this a stroke? Am I having a magical stroke?"
"Why the hell is Josh in my head?" Elliot's voice drifted in, sounding weary and profoundly confused.
"Guys? Can everyone hear me?" That was Quentin, sounding like he was one panic attack away from a total meltdown. "What the hell is happening, why can I hear Margo, Elliot and Josh in my head?"
"Oh, this is creepy. This is beyond creepy," Penny's voice growled, vibrating with his signature brand of 'I-hate-everything-about-this.' "Why are you all in my head? I didn't give anyone a permit to be in here. Get out. All of you."
"How is this possible?" Alice's voice cut through the telepathic link "Why can we all hear each other? This doesn't make any sense, a multi-node telepathic bridge without a significant power source shouldn't be possible."
"It's a bit early for a technical breakdown, Alice," Kady snapped.
The room in the pocket dimension felt like it was spinning. Marina gripped the edge of the desk as a headache was beginning to bloom in her head, her face went pale. "Kai, what the hell did you do?"
Suddenly, two more voices joined the fray. Julia and Fen.
"I don't know if this is important but Fen and I are at the McAllister estate," Julia said in a quiet tone. "We found fairies here. Irene is keeping fairies captive. She's... she's harvesting them. Grinding them up for magic. It's a literal slaughterhouse here."
"It's horrible!" Fen added, her voice cracking. "They don't even know their own kin are still alive in Fillory! We have to save them!"
There was a moment of stunned silence on the line before Elliot scoffed. "Well, isn't that just a delightful coincidence? Because we're having the exact opposite issue in Fillory. Our fairies aren't being ground into dust; they're trying to turn Margo and me into their personal hand-puppets. There's a coup rising, and the commoners are looking at us like we're the main course at a barbecue."
"Everyone, take a breath. You're all connected because I am currently holding the Unity Key. It's unifying the seekers. Think of it as a magical Discord server, but with higher stakes and no mute button." Kai said.
"Wait," Alice's voice came through, sharp with suspicion. "You have the Fifth Key already? How? We haven't even finished the research on the location!"
Kai smirked at the ceiling. "Well, Alice, some of us don't need to wait for a story book to find the truth. I have a very specific set of skills, a dashing sense of timing, and a Spidey-sense that tingles whenever someone hides a powerful artifact in a piano. It's a gift, really."
"He's a two-faced, opportunistic thief who dragged me to meet a dragon lady, a company owner and now he's dragged me into a demon's pocket dimension," Marina added aloud, her voice frustration carrying through the link.
"Darling, join the club," Elliot's voice drawled. "We've all been 'Kai-ed' at some point. It's practically a rite of passage now. Usually involves a lot of sass and a 50% chance of accidental death."
"This is all very sweet and sentimental," Margo interjected, her voice cutting through the banter like a chainsaw. "But while you guys are having a 'Who got tricked by Kai' convention, I have a rising coup on my hands. These motherfucking fairies are seriously fingering my patience, and if we don't get a solution soon, I'm going to start executing people. And I'll start with the ones with pale cunts."
"Wait," Julia said, her voice suddenly focused. "Margo, that's it. That's the play."
"What the hell do you mean, 'that's the play'?" Margo snapped. "Is this more of your brilliant insight, because unless you have a spell that turns fairies into lawn ornaments, I'm not interested."
"No, listen," Julia continued. "Fen told me that the Fairy Queen thinks her people are extinct everywhere but Fillory. She's acting out of desperation and a need for a homeland because she thinks they're the last of their kind. But they aren't. They're here, on Earth, being tortured by the McAllisters. If we tell the Queen about the captive fairies here, we can propose a deal. We help her unite her lost kin, and in exchange, they leave Fillory and you the hell alone."
There was a long pause.
"That... actually has a logical backbone," Alice admitted. "Fairies are intensely communal. Their entire culture is built on the preservation of the species."
"And they're incredibly protective," Quentin added, his voice sounding more stable. "In all the lore, fairies don't just 'abandon' their own. If they find out there's a remnant of their race being used as batteries, they'll move heaven and earth to get them back. Or at least, they'll move from Fillory to New York."*
Josh, who had been listening to the voices with a look of profound confusion, finally chimed in. "So, we're basically suggesting we trade one problem for another? We bring the angry, invisible pale-people to Earth to fight the rich, conniving lady? I mean, I'm down for the chaos, but is that safe?"
"Uh, guys?" Elliot's voice suddenly dipped into a range of pure, unadulterated terror. "Why the hell am I seeing another me here? And why does he look like he's been dead for three weeks and is very, very unhappy about it?
"Uhhh, Elliot?" Margo's voice sounded from beside him shocked as well "I'm seeing a version of me as well." Suddenly, the room in the pocket dimension began to chill. In the corners of the study, shadows began to coalesce into solid shapes. Alicia gasped as a figure stepped out of the darkness, it was a version of her, but her eyes were replaced by flickering blue flames, and her skin was cracked like dry parchment.
Beside Marina, a version of herself appeared, looking like she did when she was first expelled from Brakebills, desperate, cruel, and bleeding from the eyes.
Josh shrieked as a "Party Josh" appeared, but his face was a melting mask of hedonistic rot, clutching a bottle that leaked black ichor.
Kai turned slowly. Standing in front of him was an apparition that looked exactly like him. It wore the same smirk, the same effortless posture, Kai didn't recoil at the new development. No, in fact, he smirked back at the double. "Interesting. You've got my nose, but the lighting is a bit dramatic, don't you think?"
"We're facing something similar on the ship!" Penny's voice sounded through the link. "We have the Fourth Key, and these... things... they just started appearing when a single person touches the key. They feed on insecurities. They feed on panic and fear. They're like psychological parasites given form."
Penny's voice gritted with effort. "But how the fuck are we all seeing them too? It shouldn't be possible unless it's being touched individually. How are we all having a collective nightmare?"
Kai's eyes remained locked on his own apparition, which was slowly reaching out toward him with fingers that trailed smoke.
"It's the Unity Key," Kai said, his voice echoing in the physical room and the mental link simultaneously. "It didn't just bridge our voices. It bridged our burdens the moment our minds linked as one. The Fourth Key creates the phantoms, but the Fifth Key, the one I'm holding, is making sure we all get to share the experience because we are also linked to the one holding the key currently. It's the ultimate group therapy session, and unfortunately, the 'monsters under the bed' just got an all-access pass to everyone's psyche."
"Well," Kai whispered, his smirk sharpening into something lethal. "If we're going to have a party, we might as well make it one to remember."
Margo's apparition suddenly convulsed and its form shifted into a twisted, skeletal version of her wearing a crown of jagged obsidian. It leaned toward the telepathic link. Its voice sounded like grinding stones. "You think you're a Queen because you saved a few peasants? I watched you bargain your best friend's child to those fairies you claim are the bad guys, but you were the one who invited them in and now they have turned those ungrateful peasants against you. When they scream for your head, I'll be the one sharpening the axe."
Even Kai, standing miles away in a different reality, winced. "Damn. Someone's been hitting the dark-roast cynicism a bit hard."
But his bravado vanished in an instant. His own apparition suddenly tilted its head and its body underwent a transformation as well, its skin paled until it became translucent, marble white of a corpse. Fangs, long and wicked, slid from its gums, and a dark, vein-like network pulsed beneath its eyes.
"My face," Kai whispered in surprise at the transformation, "what the hell have you done to my magnificent face." He was outraged at the chalk white complexion, it looked like Casper the fucking ghost.
The apparition raised a hand, its fingers wreathed in a black, oily flame that Kai didn't recognize but the feeling made him narrow his eyes. It didn't strike; it simply whispered a word in a tongue that sounded like the dying gasps of a universe.
Suddenly, every other apparition that had appeared in front of all the others, rot-Josh, the burned-Alice, the skeletal -Margo and the others all burst into flakes of black soot. The mental link screamed with a feedback loop of pure agony before going silent.
The Kai-phantom leaned in, its voice shifting into a distorted tone. It sounded echo-heavy, and dripping with a paradoxical insanity.
"The cycle is a circle, little bird," the apparition hissed. "You think you are the controller of their fates, but you are just the ink on a page that is already being burned. I am the end you cannot script." And immediately after uttering those words its eyes widened and it began to dissolve into black flakes.
"Oh, shit," Kai's eyes widened at the implication, he didn't waste time waiting for the demented looking apparition to say anything further as roared into the mental link, his voice sounded raw with a panic no one had ever heard from him before. "Penny! get a lock on Elliot and Margo's signatures! Teleport to the Fillory NOW!"
"What's happening?!" Marina shouted in panic at hearing the urgency in Kai's tone and because of the sudden change happening around her and Elliot, "Kai, why is everything gray? What is this?"*
Alicia reached out, catching a flake of something falling from the ceiling. It wasn't ash. It looked more like black snow, dark, freezing crystals that didn't melt but seemed to sink into the skin, carrying the weight of a nightmare.
Kai ignored them, his eyes fixed on a corner of the room where the shadows were thickening into something solid and mountainous. "Impressive," Kai said, his voice trembling despite his effort. "Mind introducing yourself, demon? Or are we skipping the pleasantries and going straight to the soul-devouring?"
The flakes of Kai's dissolved apparition drifted into that corner, absorbed by the darkness as if being fed to a furnace. Suddenly, two massive, glowing red eyes snapped open.
A chuckle vibrated through the floorboards, "A demon?" the voice boomed, ancient and terrifying."I am no demon, child."
As the entity stepped forward, the shadow snow fell faster. He was a colossus clad in archaic, black-iron Greek armor. His helmet was a nightmare of bronze and blood-stain, the visor shaped into a permanent, screaming snarl. In his left hand, he dragged a limp, broken figure who Kai immediately recognized as the balding old man who had been the "Master of the House," now nothing more than a discarded toy.
Marina gasped, stumbling back against a bookshelf, her face drained of color. Josh simply collapsed, his breath coming in ragged, terrified hitches as he curled into a ball. Alicia stepped back, her mind finally breaking under the weight of an entity that defied every magical law she knew.
Through the Unity Key, the terror radiated like a shockwave to the others.
In Fillory, Elliot and Margo fell to their knees in the throne room, clutching their chests as a wave of primordial dread washed over them. At the McAllister estate, Julia and Fen froze, the very air feeling like it was made of lead. On the Muntjac, Quentin and the others scrambled as the ship groaned under the psychic pressure.
Then, they all heard it. A new, terrifying voice echoing in their souls: "Ahhhhh... how delicious your fears are. So many vintages. So many regrets."
Kai stared at the titan. "You're the one I felt earlier. The 'tangy' one. You're the one hiding in the shadows" He looked at the broken old man being dragged through the soot. "Who are you?"
The entity chuckled, the sound vibrated deep into Kai's soul causing him to frown. "I am he who is the heartbeat of the coward. I am the sweat on the brow of the dying. I am Phobos."
Kai's mind raced at a thousand miles per hour. 'Phobos? The Greek God of Panic and Fear?'
'Shit,' he thought, his eyes narrowing. 'How the hell is this possible? He was never in the show. The Old Gods were just bureaucratic assholes or silent titans. This... this is different.'
He looked at the dark snow and the gray colored reality of the room. 'Is this the response? Is this what happens when you meddle with the script too much? The universe sends a specialist to clean up the mess? But why is he here, in a realm that was supposed to be for positive energy a direct opposite of what he is?'
Kai then glanced at the dead positive energy demon in Phobos hand. 'He hijacked the realm from that demon and converted this dimension into his own huh.'
Kai began to channel every ounce of his magic, his eyes began to glow with a faint blue light. "You're a long way from Olympus, big guy."
Phobos didn't answer with words. The God tilted his and suddenly moved with a speed that defied his massive size. Before Kai could even finish a thought, a massive, iron-clad fist appeared inches from his face.
BOOOM.
