Chapter 21 - Zirabia Magic Heights Academy

After completing the grueling mining and excavation phase of our construction quest, Nozue and I stood back to wipe the sweat from our brows and admire our work. What had once been an impassable, rocky expanse was now a freshly carved, reinforced tunnel, ready for further use.

The site foreman approached with a highly satisfied smile and handed me a stamped completion parchment. "This is proof of your work today," the foreman said, nodding in deep approval. "You boys are stronger than a team of full-grown men."

I accepted the paper, a hint of pride in my smile, while Nozue gave a respectful nod.

"Thanks," I said, tucking the paper safely into my pocket.

We immediately headed back to the Guild to report our success. Inside, the evening crowd was already gathering, but we found Missy at the reception desk, her usual towering pile of papers neatly organized. As we approached, Missy looked up, her eyes noticeably softening the moment she saw me.

"Hey, you two! Done with the quest already?" Missy asked, her voice much warmer than her usual professional tone.

"Yeah, we finished it up," I replied, handing her the stamped completion paper.

Missy took it, her delicate fingers brushing against mine for a moment longer than strictly necessary. She quickly averted her gaze, a deep blush coloring her elven ears and cheeks.

"G-Good job," she stammered slightly, trying her best to maintain her composure. She opened a locked drawer and pulled out a heavy leather pouch. "Here is your reward for the excavation: 300 silver coins."

I took the pouch with a bright smile. "Thanks, Missy!"

Missy nodded, her heart racing a little as she watched Nozue and me turn and leave the Guild hall.

As we stepped back out into the fading afternoon sun, holding our hard-earned silver, we made our way through the lively, buzzing streets of Druzka toward the orphanage.

Upon reaching our home, Rosalia greeted us at the entrance with open arms. "Welcome back, boys! How did the quest go?"

I held up the heavy pouch of coins with a massive grin. "We finished the mining quest ahead of schedule and earned 300 silvers!"

Rosalia's face lit up with absolute pride. "That's wonderful! I'm so incredibly proud of you both. Come, let's go inside. Dinner is almost ready."

The younger children immediately gathered around the dining table, practically vibrating with excitement to hear about our day.

"Hi kids, don't worry—I'll tell you all about our adventure," I laughed, taking a seat.

"Yes, we'll share the whole story with you!" Nozue added, setting glasses of fresh water on the table for everyone.

As Rosalia served the steaming meal, I animatedly recounted our experiences at the construction site. "I even gained a new skill today!" I said with enthusiasm. "It's called Fist Authority. And my Mining skill improved a lot; it's already up to Level 11!"

Nozue looked at me, genuinely surprised. "You didn't mention that earlier! That's not fair, I want a cool punching skill!"

I chuckled, rubbing the back of my neck. "I must have forgotten in all the excitement. It just slipped my mind."

Joyous laughter filled the room as the children, Nozue, Rosalia, and I enjoyed our time together, sharing stories within the cozy, safe confines of the orphanage.

As we were finishing our plates, Rosalia glanced at me with a warm, secretive smile. "Kazu, I heard something very interesting today. There is a free scholarship available at the Zirabia Magic Heights Academy."

My eyes widened with instant curiosity. I remembered Kazike mentioning that place. "Really? When did you find out?"

Rosalia dried her hands on her apron. "While I was out buying food at the central market, I saw a student from the academy handing out promotional posters. I made sure to pick one up for you. Let me show it to you."

She pulled a crisp, high-quality parchment from her pocket. I took it and read the elegant calligraphy aloud. "Zirabia Magic Heights Academy is seeking one exceptionally worthy individual to join our prestigious ranks as a full-scholarship student. Anyone below fourteen years of age may apply and take the entrance exam." I looked up, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Scholar? Does this mean I could study magic for free? But how?"

Nozue tilted his head, looking puzzled. "I don't really know how an academy exam works either."

Rosalia placed a comforting, maternal hand on my shoulder. "The only requirement is to be 'worthy.' Why don't you give it a try, Kazu? You have infinite potential."

I hesitated, looking down at my calloused, dirt-stained hands. "Do you really think I'm worthy of a place like that?"

"To all of us here at the orphanage, you are definitely deserving of a chance at that academy," Rosalia said firmly.

Nozue nodded in vigorous agreement. "That's right. You're the strongest person I know!"

My eyes welled up with tears of profound gratitude. "Thank you for believing in me, guys." I reached over and hugged Nozue tightly. "I'll go to the Zirabia Magic Heights Academy tomorrow morning and see if I can get in!"

Nozue offered a highly supportive smile. "Do you want me to come with you for moral support?"

My face lit up. "Of course you can!"

After dinner, the children helped Rosalia clean up the kitchen. The evening was warm and comfortable, and Rosalia wished us all goodnight with a loving smile.

Nozue and I headed up to our room, enjoying the cool night air drifting in through the small window. As we settled into our simple beds, my thoughts were entirely consumed by the next day.

"I can't believe this is finally happening," I whispered to the dark ceiling. "Tomorrow could change absolutely everything for us."

Nozue, already settled under his covers, smiled sleepily. "You've earned this, Kazu. It's going to be great."

I nodded, feeling a deep wave of reassurance. "Thanks, Nozue. I really appreciate you coming with me."

"Get some rest," Nozue said, his eyes closing. "We'll need all our energy."

I turned off the lantern, leaving the room bathed in soft, silvery moonlight. The night was peaceful, and I soon drifted off to sleep, dreaming of my future at the prestigious magic academy.

The Next Morning

As dawn broke over Druzka, Nozue and I rose early to embark on our journey to the academy. I descended the stairs, my movements still slightly sluggish with sleep, to find Nozue already busy organizing a small travel bag.

"Good morning, Nozue. You're up already?"

He glanced up, a highly focused look in his eyes. "Morning, Kazu. Just making sure we have everything we need for the trip across the city."

I couldn't help but smile. "You're always so prepared. I'm still incredibly nervous. I don't even know if I'll get in."

"No worries," Nozue said, his confidence unwavering. "I'm sure you'll make it. Regardless, we need to look ready."

"Alright. Just give me a second," I said, heading for the washroom. "I just need to shower."

Nozue nodded. "I'll be ready when you're done. You can put the supplies in your Item Space before we leave so we don't have to carry them."

With our preparations complete, we walked to the central district and boarded a horse-drawn carriage to take us up the steep, winding road to the highest point in Druzka. The journey was filled with a palpable, buzzing anticipation.

As we finally approached the academy grounds, my jaw dropped in sheer awe. The institution's impressive structure loomed before us like a royal fortress. Its towering, pristine white walls and grand, palace-like design left me completely captivated.

I stepped out of the carriage, my heart racing with a dizzying mix of excitement and nervousness. I stood before the massive, wrought-iron gates of Zirabia Magic Heights Academy, the imposing structure a testament to centuries of magical prestige.

In front of the gates, several academy students wearing elegant, tailored uniforms were busy directing a massive crowd of nervous newcomers. Nozue and I approached a long table set up as a registration area.

"Good morning," I began, politely addressing the two female student receptionists behind the desk. "I'm here to apply for the scholarship program. How do I go about the application process?"

The first receptionist, a girl with sharp features named Seira Koruchi, greeted me with a highly practiced, professional smile. "Good morning! I'm Seira Koruchi, and this is Joy Hasaki. To apply as a scholar, you'll need to complete a brief registration process. First, fill out this form," she said, sliding a thick piece of parchment and an ink pen across the table.

Joy Hasaki, who looked a bit more approachable, added, "Once you've filled out the form, you need to present it at the main gate to the Knight-Course students on duty. They'll guide you through the actual examination steps. Is that clear?"

I nodded, taking the form. "What comes after the gate?"

Seira replied, her tone turning a bit stern. "The Knight students will provide all further instructions. But keep in mind, kid... only one student out of this entire crowd will be selected for the scholarship today. So make sure you actually stand out. There are hundreds of highly qualified applicants."

Nozue leaned in, whispering into my ear. "That girl seems a bit strict."

I glanced at Nozue and nodded in agreement. "Noted," I whispered back. I turned to the receptionists with a polite smile. "Thank you for the information. I'll get this form filled out."

Seira raised a skeptical eyebrow at me but said nothing else. "You're applying on your own, correct?"

"Yes," I confirmed.

"Next!" Seira called out loudly, directing her attention to the noble applicant behind us.

I took a deep breath, stepped aside to a small writing desk, and carefully filled out my basic details, my thoughts entirely focused on the massive opportunity ahead.

After completing the paperwork, I confidently approached the grand, towering gate. Two tall, imposing Knight-Course students, clad in gleaming silver uniforms that signified their elite status, blocked the entrance. I presented my form to the guard on the left.

"I'm here to submit my application as a scholar," I said clearly.

The Knight took the form, his eyes scanning the ink briefly. He gave a sharp nod, stepping aside to signal my entry.

I took a step forward, but as Nozue tried to follow right behind me, the second Knight raised a heavy, armored arm to block his path.

"Halt," the Knight commanded. "Only registered applicants are permitted inside the academy testing grounds."

I quickly turned back, looking at the guard with concern. "Wait, why can't my friend come inside with me? He's just here for support."

"Academy rules," the Knight responded flatly. "No spectators."

I looked at Nozue, who was standing awkwardly on the outside of the gate. Suddenly, an idea sparked in my mind. I leaned in, whispering urgently across the iron bars. "Nozue, you should apply too! You have an A-Rank dual-element mana affinity! Don't waste this opportunity standing out here while I take the test!"

Nozue blinked, his eyes suddenly lighting up with intense resolve. "You know what? You're right. Okay, I'll go get a form right away!"

I offered a highly reassuring smile. "I'll wait for you just inside the courtyard. Hurry!"

As Nozue spun around and sprinted back toward Seira and Joy's registration desk, I finally stepped through the grand gates and into the academy proper.

The sheer grandeur of the courtyard and the interior halls was awe-inspiring. I wandered past towering statues, polished marble floors, and intricate tapestries that spoke of centuries of magical tradition.

My thoughts were almost drowned out by the bustling, intimidating activity around me—a sea of wealthy students and strict faculty members moving purposefully through the halls. I found a quiet spot near a massive stone pillar to wait, my anticipation mounting as I kept my eyes locked on the entrance, eagerly waiting for Nozue to join me so we could face the entrance exam together.
