He knew in his heart that to appease these "big bosses" behind the scenes, he promised the vice-presidential position to win over the Kennedy family; ceded energy and arms interests to Rockefeller and DuPont; and now still had to give benefits to Mellon and Carnegie. At this rate, the power in the hands of the White House would sooner or later be completely divided and consumed by these families.
