Chapter 33 - Mastermind

April 15th: Saila seemed to be five or six months pregnant in just ten days. She was genuinely fortunate, chosen by the gods.

April 30th: Sierra is almost ready to give birth. I'm thrilled—the important baby is coming. I must say, Mr. Haymock has been an incredible help!

May 2nd: The babies were born—there are two of them! Haha.

May 3rd: Damn it, one of the babies died. What went wrong?

Old Cook said that Ain had shown them that he had two healthy grandchildren, but one of them died, and the other became a murderer.

Seth shook his head. If that's the case, isn't the murderer only two months old? This would make them the youngest murderer in the history of the Loen Kingdom.

He continued reading.

May 7th: A miracle happened. So that's how it is.

A miracle? What kind of miracle?

May 14th: The child is growing rapidly, but his appetite is enormous. His mother's milk is no longer enough to satisfy him. Last night, he even tried to eat Saila.

May 21st: I asked Old Ain to buy livestock to feed this child. He needs a lot of flesh and blood.

May 27th: It seems he's no longer satisfied with animal flesh. I'll have to find something else for him. Well, there are plenty of homeless people in this town and many mindless workers, too. If one or two go missing, it probably won't raise any alarms. But I can't show up in person—I'm still a new face here. I'll have to find a way.

May 29th: There are a lot of fools in this town. That old woman already believes my words—it's ridiculous she thinks she's a favored one of the night. Still, she'll be a useful helper.

June 3rd: I was right—Paris brought me a vagrant. It seems wasteful to use him to feed the child. Yes, I can teach her a prayer spell, making her believe even more that she is chosen. Also, I can fully use these homeless people—first as sacrifices, then as 'food.' I'm a genius!

So that's how Paris's Blessed of the Night came to be. That old lady was being manipulated. The poor souls deceived by Paris became both sacrifices and food.

Seth's mood grew heavier as he continued to read. He felt the blood seeping through the lines of this diary but remained silent.

June 7th: Gorey—yes, that's the name Old Ian gave him. It's hideous, but it doesn't matter; he's just a tool. Recently, Gorey has become a bit uncontrollable. He ran off to the mountains without telling me, but I discovered he could change and control animals through this.

June 14th: That little bastard ran into town. Damn it, others can't discover him—I need to teach him a lesson!

Seth noticed that the diary's author had begun changing the child's name, perhaps indicating a shift in how he perceived the 'child.'

June 25th: I'm going mad—this little bastard is killing people! I've provided him with food, and it's still not enough! Damn, it's not time yet.

July 8th: He killed another person at the town hotel. It seems I'll have to hide him in the mountains.

July 11th: He returned from the mountain, claiming he was attacked. What a bastard.

July 12th: There's a lot of trouble. According to his description, the person who attacked him seems to be the baron's son from the town. He had already encountered that kid named Seth once at Memorial Square. This bastard is causing me problems—what should I do? Kill that kid? But he's a noble... troublesome...

July 15th: This creature is truly a monster without emotion. He killed his grandfather and mother.

July 16th: It's that Seth again! Damn, how did he end up at Paris's house? Bastard, I was just across the door from him. I shouldn't have hesitated—if I had acted, I wouldn't have let him escape, I wouldn't have let him call the police, and I wouldn't have lost Paris, my useful tool!

Reading this, Seth was startled.

Was the diary's owner at Paris's house? Suddenly, Seth remembered the room in Paris's basement. Could the diary's owner have been in that room at the time?

July 17th: Time is running out. For that matter, I need a large number of sacrifices. Hey, I think I hear a carriage approaching.

This was the last diary entry.

After closing the diary, Seth quickly exited the room just in time to see Lewis and the others emerging.

"Officer, you need to look at this," Seth said, handing over the diary he had found.

Lewis flipped through a few pages, and his expression darkened.

"Now we're in trouble."

He passed the diary to the other two officers. When Martha reached the last page, she whispered, "He's planning to make many sacrifices. Doesn't that mean the people in this town are in danger?"

Lewis nodded. "Today's search ends here. We must return immediately and meet with the Mayor and Chief Kaosi to discuss our next steps."

They hurried downstairs, left the farmhouse, and returned to the carriage.

As the carriage headed back to town, Seth spoke up.

"Officer, I have a suggestion."

Lewis glanced at him.

"Go ahead."

Seth pointed to the diary in Jeffrey's hand.

"The strange occurrences in our town recently were caused by the diary's owner. He also mentions hating me. I think we can use that to draw him out."

The three inspectors exchanged glances, and the red-haired Martha warned, "But if we do that, you'll be taking on a lot of risk."

Seth straightened his back and said, "The diary also says he needs a lot of sacrifices. If taking this risk can resolve the situation quickly and prevent a disaster, I'm willing to do it."

Lewis nodded slightly. "Your courage is commendable. We'll consider your proposal. If necessary, we'll let you know. Does that sound acceptable, Mr. Seth?"

Seth nodded in agreement.

The carriage dropped them off at the police station in town. After saying goodbye, Seth watched the carriage pull away. Lewis adjusted his black-rimmed glasses and turned to Martha.

"This time, your intuition has been very effective. Baron Byson's son helped us. We got a lot of information and clues from him without much effort."

Martha proudly lifted her chest, accentuating her curves. This caught the attention of a passing policeman, who promptly walked into a post.

"Of course," she said with a smirk.

"As mentioned earlier, my spiritual intuition has always been spot-on."
