Chapter 44 - Longing

"There is something about that man, and I must find out who he is and what he's hiding," Benedith said as they walked inside.

Elizabeth, holding her dress and hurrying forward, heard him and turned. "If this is about Mary's husband, you should stop now, Benedict."

"Elizabeth!"

The call came from the doorway ahead. Elizabeth turned and giggled seeing her betrothed, then glanced back at her brother and cousin. "Oh, that's my beloved. I must go."

She hurried ahead but paused to look over her shoulder. "Be good, you two."

As she hurried off, Eloise sighed. "We are among the two unmarried attending this ball." She crossed her arms, lips pouting, then glanced at Benedict. "You should have remained at the bachelor's ball—at least find yourself a wife."

Benedict's nose flared. "I came here to be certain Mary is okay."

Eloise suddenly paused, blinking at him. "Okay? In what way do you mean?"
