Chapter 56 - Steampunk Sneak

The warehouse was dark, and he had been there for quite some time. There were patrols wandering about, but other than that it seemed to be completely deserted... The wind wasn't chilly on his bare skin, which was a plus - he didn't know he was in the middle of a desert. The enormous crates around him read 'Airship', probably filled with components of some sort. He didn't know if it was night or day, as the building he was in didn't have any visible windows or doors and the lights were kept at a dim level.

"Who's there?" Mat heard in the distance as the flashlight's beam swept past the crate he was under. He looked up and around but saw nobody...

The sound of footsteps came from behind quickly, and before he could react, all he felt was pain. His face slammed into the concrete floor as his hips and pelvis flattened out immediately, caught beneath the rubber tread of the intruder's sole. He couldn't move his head, which was jammed in between the rubber with his chest and all of his major organs. His right arm was safe, but he couldn't feel his left...

Puzzle crouched with her revolver in hand, keeping low behind the crate she used as cover. The beam of light swept back her way from the catwalk above, causing her heart to skip a beat. She crouched a bit lower to keep out of sight, holding her position for a few minutes in hopes that the security guard would resume his normal patrol and think it was nothing... She felt something crunch under her boot, but that wasn't anything to be concerned about - probably a piece of glass or something trivial. Her tail swished behind her gently as she waited for the right time to leave...

"Damn desert's getting to me..." The guard grumbled to himself as he began to walk along the catwalk... Perfect. Puzzle quickly and silently made her way through the warehouse. There were a few parts she needed here for a project she was working on back at her home: A crashed and abandoned airship that she called a living space. It was in the middle of the desert, but that was perfect for her and everything she needed to do.

Mat was still very much alive as she walked. His tiny torso was safely tucked between the tread of her footwear, and although he knew it should hurt and he should be miserable ~ He wasn't entirely... There was something about the pain that his mind had come to cope with at this point - call it a self preservation technique, but even without any positive stimulation, pain was something he had come to enjoy. He was becoming a true masochist...

The one arm he still had slipped down from her tread in her stride, crushing beneath the rubber sole easily. In a few steps it was left in her wake. Mat's breathing was sharp and shaking, but he was still very alive. He watched the ground as it lifted away from him, only for him to fall back at an alarming rate to slam into the concrete floor. He lost count of her steps as she traveled...

***The Next Morning***

Puzzle walked along the wooden deck of her airship with a red book in hand, humming to herself as she approached a scavenged chair she had picked up a few weeks ago. It was comfy... Really comfy. She plopped down lazily after a long night out stealing supplies for the day, her right leg crossed a bit over the left as she reclined with her legs over the armrest. With a contented smile she began to read, unaware of the suffering passenger she had in tow.

Mat was still alive - and incredibly exhausted. He couldn't believe his tiny organs were still functioning after the long night of running through both a desert and city... With airship parts to boot. He had no idea how long he would be there. Previous experiences told him that he didn't need to eat or drink to survive - So there was no reason for him to pass away other than blood loss.

*** Six Days Later... ***

Puzzle stood on the lower decks of the airship. She was deep in her little project, tinkering with an engine of some sort covering herself in oil and other nasties so that she could get it running again. The pieces she had recovered almost a week ago were perfect, but there were still a few more parts she needed to collect that she had been gathering over the last few days. She lifted her right foot gently, tapping her toe a few times on the ground idly...

Mat's still-living body fell from it's confines after days of torture. His torso was all that was left - What was left of his leg and arm had long since gone in her wake. He looked up as she shifted her weight again, her heel coming down on his tiny body.

*Crunch*

The tread landed directly on his little skull, and Puzzle was far too enamored in her work to care much about a little crack under her heel. When she called it a night, Mat's carcass was left flat on the ground where she stood... Minutes later, the felines she had kept on the ship with her made a quick little snack of his smushed body... She had a small team of felines that she had trained to help her scavenge and protect the place while she was gone. They were her 'Attack Cats', well trained and very obedient to her. There was nothing left of his carcass to find after they were through with him.
