Chapter 130 - Chapter 128: Winterfell Awaits

Chapter 128: Winterfell Awaits

A raven arrived at Winterfell as the sun dipped low on the horizon.

Its wings were black against the orange sky, wings beating hard from the long flight south. Maester Luwin hurried across the courtyard, chain clinking softly, the scroll clutched tightly in his aged hands. He found Lord Eddard Stark in the armory, inspecting a newly forged blade with one of the smiths.

"My lord," Luwin said, slightly out of breath. "A raven from King's Landing."

Ned set the sword down and took the scroll. He broke the Baratheon seal with a quiet snap. As he read, a rare, genuine smile slowly spread across his face — the first real smile he had worn since returning from White Harbor.

"Robert is coming," he said quietly.

The announcement spread through Winterfell like wildfire.

The family gathered in the Great Hall as servants lit additional torches. The news lit up the room more brightly than any fire could.

Robb was the first to react, his face breaking into a wide, proud grin. "The King himself? Coming here?" He stood taller, shoulders squared. "I was barely more than a babe the last time I saw him. I'll make sure Winterfell is ready. The men will drill twice as hard. We'll show the southerners what Northern hospitality looks like."

Bran's eyes were huge with excitement. "The King is coming! Will there be knights? Real knights with shining armor? Tournaments? Will they fight with swords and lances?" He bounced on his crutches, imagination already running wild with visions of glorious warriors and pageantry.

Arya folded her arms but couldn't hide her smirk. "I don't care about feasts or dancing. I want to see the Kingsguard. And the Hound. I bet he's huge and scary. I'm going to watch them train. Maybe they'll let me spar."

Rickon cheered loudly, banging his spoon on the table. "Shaggydog will scare the King!"

Theon leaned back with a lazy grin. "The King dragging himself all the way to the North? Must be important."

But it was Sansa whose reaction shone brightest.

Her cheeks flushed pink the moment she heard Prince Joffrey's name mentioned in the letter. She sat perfectly straight, hands folded in her lap, but her mind was already spinning with dreams.

Prince Joffrey… she thought, heart fluttering. He must be so handsome now. Tall and golden like his mother. Will he remember me? Will he ask me to dance? Will the Queen notice how well I sing and embroider?

She imagined walking through the gardens with him, his hand in hers, everyone watching with envy. A perfect prince and a perfect lady. Songs would be written about them.

And yet…

A quieter thought slipped in, unbidden. Jon. Her half-brother who had left Winterfell at six years old — already called a genius, blessed by the gods. The boy Father had let go. Now they called him the White Wolf King beyond the Wall. Handsome, they said. Powerful. Kind to his people.

Sansa felt a strange warmth in her chest. If only Jon could see me now again, gosh he was so handsome when he visited here on his eagle back… But she quickly pushed the thought aside, focusing again on the golden prince riding north.

Jeyne Poole and Beth Cassel noticed immediately.

"You're blushing!" Jeyne teased, nudging her. "Thinking about the prince, aren't you?"

Sansa tried to look dignified. "Don't be silly."

Beth giggled. "You'll need the prettiest dresses. The blue one with the silver stitching?"

Sansa's eyes sparkled. "And the white one with the direwolves. I must look perfect when they arrive."

The girls dissolved into excited whispers, already planning fabrics and hairstyles.

Catelyn Stark shifted into her role as Lady of Winterfell without hesitation.

"Maester Luwin, send word to all bannermen within three days' ride. We need more provisions," she ordered crisply. "The kitchens will work day and night. Guest chambers in the Great Keep must be scrubbed and aired. Fresh rushes, new tapestries. The King and his party will want hot baths after the long road."

She moved through the castle like a general preparing for battle. Servants scrambled. Maids polished silver. Cooks roasted extra meat and baked loaves in shifts. Guards were doubled on the walls. Stables were cleaned and stocked with the best hay.

"Winterfell must show the South what Northern strength and hospitality look like," she told her ladies. "No detail is too small."

That night, after the excitement had quieted and most of the castle slept, Ned Stark stood alone on the battlements.

Snow fell gently around him. He looked south, toward the long road Robert would travel, but his thoughts kept drifting north — beyond the Wall, to the kingdom his son had built from nothing.

He had guessed why Robert was truly coming. The Hand's position. The burden of ruling. The games of King's Landing.

Ned did not want it.

He had built a good life here. His children were growing. The North was at peace. But Robert was his friend — his brother in all but blood. When the King called, honor demanded an answer.

Still, he turned his gaze north one last time.

"Jon," he whispered into the wind. "Whatever you have built beyond the Wall… I hope it remains safe from what is coming."

At sunset the next day, Winterfell was alive with preparation.

Servants ran through corridors carrying linens and supplies. Smiths worked through the night, hammers ringing as they forged extra arrowheads and repaired armor. The kitchens never stopped — the smell of roasting venison and fresh bread filled every hall. Maids scrubbed floors until they shone. New banners were hung, direwolves proud against white fields.

Ned stood alone on the high walls once more, cloak billowing in the cold wind. He looked south, toward the distant road where his oldest friend approached.

One king rode north to ask a favor.

One lord waited with a heavy heart.

Neither knew that the choices made in Winterfell would soon echo across every corner of the realm — and far beyond the Wall, where another king had already begun shaping a different future.
