Chapter 48 - Ch 48: A life, for a life.

Three days later. . .

The twins have arrived with the final grades for spring and summer term.

Both of them still wore their school uniformes along the brooches and earlooms that I gave them. They also brought their pets and inside their mini boxes which is nice, because I do not want them roaming around the house. Much less the restaurant.

'Wow! You were both capable of keeping up your good grades!! Wonderful job!' I patted them on the head with each hand.

'Hahahaha/hehehehe.' The twins laughed and liked to be praised by their mom.

'We should do a small gathering soon, to celebrate your achievements!' I declared smiling while stopping from putting their heads.

The twins looked excited.

'But! We will see that later, for now, both of you go to put your things upstairs, and then we'll catch up.' I ordered them pointing to the stairs.

'Yes mom!' The twins took their lugagge and went upstairs to un pack, leave their pets upstairs and take their uniformes off.

I exhaled exhausted. Should I tell them about Diane? Most probably, they need to be wary of them. I nodded to myself.

*PAM!!* Elara and Ivy knocked the restaurant door open, looking pale, sweat y and exhausted.

'Great heavens you too! What happened?!' I asked in surprise trotting to them.

Ivy was the first to speak. 'E-Early. . . Water break!' She exclaimed. 'Primrose, asking for you!' She added.

'Oh no.' I raised my eyebrows. 'G-Give me a few seconds, you guys go back and check on Prim!' I asked them as I rushed upstairs and taking Liam and baby girl with me.

'Hurry!! Midwife says she is losing a lot of blood!' Elara hurtéis me as she went back.

'Remember the code word!' Ivy added chasing after Elara.

The twins came rushing outside their room. 'Mom, is everything okay?! We heard screaming about a water stream breaking? What is going on?!' The twins asked simultaneously.

'L-Look, I'll explain everything soon, okay?!' I gave the twins their baby siblings. 'But I need you to follow my instructions first: close everything and don't let anyone inside. Okay? Unless they use the code "Ancestral reliquary" you are NOT to open the door, okay?' I asked them taking each twin by their shoulders.

The twins nodded but their foreheads were burrowed. 'W-Why?' Charlie asked.

'Because. . . I made a mistake by letting a "a wannabe mother" fae live in the apartment complex and just found out she has been using her magic to affect a pregnant neighbour so she might die and take the soon-to-be born baby all for herself.' I blurted out.

The children pale. 'Who would do such a thing?!' Lottie asked horrified.

'Well, clearly someone who is not in their right state of mind.' Charlie replied with an "it's obvious" tone.

'Charlie is right. The half-fairy called Diane is not in her right state of mind, and she also, has been wanting to "hold on to" baby girl.' I agreed with Charlie and then pointed at baby girl who was sleeping peacefully. 'Lottie, since you've been practicing witchcraft, I ask you to use as many tricks you have up your sleeve, it doesn't matter if they are small or not, use them.' I asked her. 'If you can power up the good luck charm of the restaurant or múltiple it's power then do it.'

Lottie nodded determined.

'Charlie, Fairies and half-fae have iron as weakness, use kitchen knifes if it is necessary.' I gave Charlie the green card to use his knighthood skills.

Charlie nodded.

'Good. Oh, and one more thing: names give control to fairies, use the nicknames to refer to yourselves and your siblings, but never full name. Not until I make sure we are ALL safe.' I asked for them one last time.

They looked at each other nodded to me.

I kissed all my children good bye and tan downstairs. 'Close the doors and windows with lock, I already have my own key!' I let them know.

'Yes mom!' They twins agreed watching me go.

. . . .

Two hours later. . .

'¡AaaaaaAAAAAAAAaaaaAAAAhhhhhh!' Primrose was screaming her lungs out in pain.

The window was making a racket from the outside, like someone was "eager" to see the baby.

'I-I CANNOT DO IT!! NOT ANYMOOOOOOREEEEEEEE!!' Primrose wailed as she felt her life being sucked out.

The priest kept reciting prayers and giving the holy barrier more strength, but even then I could tell that it was becoming exhausting to him, and clearly, Diane's magic was mildly stronger than the priest's, which was enough to put up a fight.

'I see the head!! A few more pushes and we'll be done!!' The midwife let everyone know. 'Push harder Prim, PUSH HARDER!!' She pleaded to Prim.

'I-I can't!! I can't do it!!' Primrose was crying out of exhaustion.

'Prim, prim!' I took her face with my free hand. 'Look at me! You CAN do it! You WILL do it!! Understood?!'

Prim nodded with terror in her eyes, her teeth cringing, and blood from her lover lip from biting too much.

'Good, now, on the count of three you push. Okay?!' I asked her and she nodded taking deep breath. 'One! . . . . Two!. . . . THREE!!' I counted aloud.

'RrrrraaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!' Primrose cried out loud. 'Curse you, Levyn Forestheart!!' Screamed her lungs out of rage.

'Waaaaahhhhh! Waaaah! Waaaaaaah!' The wails of the baby silenced the room.

'It is. . . A healthy baby girl!' The midwife exclaimed raising the bloodied baby in mid-air. Then, she wrapped the baby in a white cotton cloth to clean the baby and gave her to Prim. 'Here you go.'

Both Prim and I looked at the baby girl, what we were seeing, was an overol beautiful baby girl, still wailing but nontheless, as soon as Prim had her in her arms, the baby stopped wailing and cuddled on her mom. 'Indigo. . . My beautiful Indigo.' She exhaled more relaxed.

I hugged her up to her right shoulder, forgetting for a second all my problems and worries.

'Ah!. . . Ah. . .' Prim suddenly a pang in her chest. 'I-It hurts.' She touched her chest. It hurts . . . IT HURTS!!' She screamed in a panic. 'What is happening?!'

The outside window was starting to crack along with the barrier.

'The half-fae is getting desperate.' The priest said as he kneeled on the floor, barely holding himself. 'I am afraid the anti-fae guards won't come here on time.' He gasped for breath due to exhaustion.

I then remembered the pair of scissors on the baby's crib and went into the free space room and open it, finding the crib covered in salt and once I kneeled to see under it. . . There they were. . . Iron scissors.

I took the pair of scissors and returned with the rest, who were taking iron tools or objects, making a circle around the Prim and her baby. 'Hold on Prim.'

It-It hurts. . .' Prim started crying again. 'Why does it hurt?!' She tighten up her grip on her baby and her chest. 'What did that bloody fairy did to me?!' She whispered trying to not cry harder.

I then, decided to take matters into my own hands, yet, before doing so I had to ask something. 'Sir priest, one question. How long is jail for murdering a fairy?' I asked.

'If you have a especial permission like a priest or an anti-fae guard, then no jail time because it is expected that you kill it in self-defense or defending others.' The priest answered looking at me worriedly. 'If you are to kill a fairy without that especial permission, then it can depend on whether there's witnesses to your self-defense or defending others. Why?'

'Because I hope that my arm still has some aim!' I exclaimed softly throwing the opened pair of scissors to the window.

The scissors flew towards the window, with the world and the public becoming slower for a few seconds. And just like that, in slow motion, the window crashed open with the curtains ragged, as a very ugly-mouth-looking-half-fairy-half-human appeared through them with a crazy smile. . . Only to be received by the scissors's lethal iron sinking into her skull, with smoke coming out of the wound like the skin came on fire after making contact with the iron.

We all stared at her for a moment. The world returned to a normal speed motion.

'A. . . A-I. . . Just wanted. . .' Diana feel on her knees with tears in her eyes. 'Be a mom. . .' She said.

'A mom?! Ha! A mom does not take children that are not hers.' I told walking towards and getting the grip on the scissors again. 'And real mom, would NEVER, compromise a fellow mother's health.' I made the scissors sink deepeer into her skull. I then turned to look at the priest. 'I have her. . . Look for Meadow.' I requested.

The priest, both impressed and horrified, nodded and then bolted out of the apartment.

'She. . . Will die. . .' Diane looked at me smiling without guilt. 'Once she dies. . . I'll—AAAAAGH!!' She wailed as I yanked the scissors out of her.

'You cannot have the baby!' I exclaimed as then I grabbed her by the neck. 'I WON'T allow it!' I then pierce her chest with the scissors.

'A-AAAAAAAAAAGGH!!' Diane screamed out of pain.

'L-Lady Scis—Lady Baker!' The doctor called out to me. 'Leave her alive, she need to be judged!' He told me.

'She does not need to be judged, she needs to face justice!' I corrected him as I forced the scissors' into Diana's chest.

'Lady Baker!' The midwife tried to get close.

'She was able to curse Prim without her full name, if she recovers, what would stop her to do it again?!' I screamed as I yanked the scissors out.

'Aaaaaggghhhhhhh.' Diana was now wailing out of pain and misery.

'You want your baby?! Fine! You'll see it once you die!!' I raised the scissors and aimed for the throat. 'Pray that your baby does not feel ashamed of you as you to meet them in the afterlife!!'

I threw the final blow, and unlike some other stories and modern movies. . . Nobody stopped me. Not the doctor, not the midwife, much less Primrose and the baby for they were the victims.

The priest and the anti-guards? They came late. Well, early to catch Meadow trying to escape, but late to stop me from commiting murder. For I did not just slashed her throat, but I chopped the head off.

'Ah. . . Ah. . . Ah. . .' I felt my body tired and saw my vision blurred in a matter of seconds and then felt myself falling backwards.

I was able to hear Prim calling for me as the doctor and priest came to hold me and help me back up at my feet.

. . .

Twenty minutes later. . .

At this point, whole group of people was coming to see what was happening. But before facing that, I forced myself to see my friend Prim one more time.

'I am dying . . . Isn't?' Primrose asked weakly. 'I'm sorry, Indigo, mommy won't be. . . Able to see you grow.' She kissed her prematured baby who was miraculously healthy, yet extremely tiny for a normal baby. Prim then gave the baby to me and took my hand. 'I-I wanted to write some letters. . . Or rather, find someone, who could write. . . But never had time for it. . . Had to work, you know? He. . .' She then coughed a bit. 'Please. . . Write a . . . Beautiful letter for my baby girl for when . . . She's older. . . And, a letter to her father. . . Tell him. . . That . . . One: he is horrible. . . Two: that you are her guardian and, therefore. . . He cannot touch her by both human. . . And elf laws. . . And three: that if he ever suspects that Indigo's godmother. . . Is not a good caregiver. . . Let him know you killed my murderer. . . Before she killed me.' She asked weakly yet with more strength than anticipated. 'And. . . And. . . I would like to. . . Be cremated. . . Then buried. . . With a plant, or tree over me.' She asked as last wish. 'Doesn't matter as. . . Long as it produces. . . Food.' She smiled at me.

'I will.' I nodded and kept her hand in my grip.

The priest soon came and let me know that my name was quickly cleared out of any misunderstanding and the newspapers will send a beautiful story about a "wonderful la flower who murdered a psycho half-fae who tried to kidnapped a human baby."

Now that I think about it. I checked the girl out. She doesn't have the typical elf ears. Like Liam and Diane who also have fae ears as well. Odd.I remarked in my head raising an eyebrow.

The priest then went on to "clean" Primrose's soul so she could ascend to heaven.

Primrose smiled at that and looked at the roof over her head. 'Mom. . . I'm going to meet you soon. . .' She closed her eyes, letting death come to her as a close friend. . .

And then she died, as soon as she stopped breathing.

.

.

.

At Night. . .

The doctor and priest helped move Indigo's crib to my room and make an appointment for the funeral of Primrose, her cremation and what flowers could I use.

'There we go.' The priest dusted his hand. 'I'll talk to the anti-fae guards in your favor. I'll let them know you have killed in self-defense, and that you are the baby's godmother.' He let me know. 'Mind you, they are very busy, so even if it takes a couple of seasons, they will definetely come back to check on you and your testification as soon as possible.' He then left with the doctor.

The twins were fine. They almost had to fight agaisnt Meadow, who turned out to have the "great idea" of "borrowing" baby girl to appease Diane. Thankfully, the anti-fae guards came just in time to have what Charlie called "an epic battle," with the guards being victorious.

Again, they were fine, although a bit traumatized to see me covered in blood, and a new baby in my arms. I promised to explain everything to them, but first. . . I needed a shower, a meal, and sleep. A LOT of sleep.

Two days later. . .

I woke up late in the afternoon, with a fever, and a cold set cloth on my head. 'H-How. . .' I tried to take it off.

'Do not take it off, mother dearest.' Lottie stopped me from touching the cold cloth. 'The doctor who helped you with my new baby sister and her mom said that the fever could have been provoked by the half-fae before you killed her or the fairy waiting for trial as we speak.' She explained to me as she opened the windows. 'I do not know if you remember, but you could not even get up from bed, and the doctor told us that it was best for the youngest to stay away until the "bad airs" had left you and this room completely.' She let me know.

I nodded. The reality is completely different though. This fever was most likely provoked by my high levels of stress and the infections in the air getting inside me while my inmune system were weak. Now that the inmune system is back to normal, is now getting raid of the germs and bacteria, or "bad airs" as they call them here, while trying to kill me by heating up everything abnormally. I explained it to myself resigning myself to bed. 'You? . . . Charlie?. . . Liam and. . . Babies?' I asked.

'They are fine. The restaurant is also fine too.' Lottie while getting closer to me and taking the set cloth and cleaning. 'Many people from the town have sent gifts and recovery herbs and medicine, including the anti-fae guards and the priest himself. They call you "the dauntless savior," for it turns out you have taken care of a criminal who has been kidnapping babies for a really long time.' She giggled.

I frowned. For me, it was anything but funny. Fortunately, Lottie saw that for me was unamusing, so she stopped laughing. 'Ehem. . . The doctor also recommended that we were to give you only wet foods and purees because you'll likely have a store throat. Do you?' She asked.

I nodded. '. . . Water. . .' I asked and then coughed.+

'Oh, sure, I'll be right back.' Lottie ran out of the room, leaving alone with myself.

Okay, time to think more clearly. I sighed trying to sit up, but quickly finding out that my strength was less than desirable. Yeah-NOP! *flop!* I flopped down on the bed. No sitting and walking for me today it seems. I sighed heavier now. Let's think it over now. I frowned looking up to the roof above me. First thing I'll be doing, is transport the actual spiders in this roof over to the garden so I don't feel like they will come down and crawl on my face and neck. I made a promise to myself. Second, check things with Karga. After Meadow's arrest, she found out what Meadow tried to do and literally kneeled for forgiveness, assuring me that she never knew Meadow and other fairies were capable of such things. She even offered her sword and her head when she found out that Diana killed "the lovely Prim" she failed to guard. . . Once I recover, I need to let her know that, while she can still stay, though she is on probation because she came with Meadow. . . I nodded to myself.

'Mother dearest.' Lottie whispered loudly to me and she returned with a cup of water in her hands and set it on the table and helped me to sit on the bed. 'I apologize for the delay, I had to receive Minerva who has been taking care of the babies. She came with her mother, who had recently stopped nursing her last baby but still offered to nurse both baby girls.' She let me know.

I nodded exhaling of relief. 'Lottie, do me a favor. . .' I asked with my raspy and groggy voice.

'Yes, mother dearest?' Lottie asked me as she gave me the cup of water.

'Thank you.' I took the cup, and drank a few sips to quench my heavy thirst before giving my sentence. 'Remember where is the "savings chest"?' I asked her and the more few sips.

Lottie nodded.

'Take a silver coin out of it and give it Minerva's mother for nursing both baby girls.' I told her. Lottie raised both eyebrows in surprise. 'Not sure if you've noticed, but, red hair baby is still very thin despite already eating purees. . .' I coughed. 'And—' I coughed three more times. 'Baldy baby girl is. . . Just a new born. . . Tell her that is a. . . Month's payment in advance. . .' I took a deep breath and exhaled to then take bit more of water. 'We, do not know when I'll be able to return to the kitchen, so, payment in advance. . . Can secure a person working, for you. . . In the mean time.' I explained my plan.

Lottie nodded slowly. 'Before this catastrophe, have you gone for the rent money?' She asked.

I shook my head. 'I changed the date, to the end of each month. . .' I told her. 'If I have not recovered by then—' I coughed two times but heavily enough to make my throat hurt. 'Ehem. . . Tell Charlie to go for it. . . The list of the people, are in the office. . . Along with how much copper, each of them have to pay since, I make a small discount. . . For those who work directly for me . . .' I let her know.

Lottie nodded. 'Anything else?'

'Yeah. . . At dinner. . . Give me camomille tea with honey. . . And porridge with fruit puree.' I asked. 'Everything warm if you can.' I added feeling sleepy and my eyes heavy.

Lottie nodded and she helped me laid back down, not before I finished my water.

. . . .

Three weeks after. . .

I was completely cure in two weeks. . . But the sickness rubbed on Lottie and now she was on bed rest. Fortunately, the doctor adviced Lottie to minimice her own contact with others just in case, so Charlie and the other three babies were spared from being sick.

I would make sure to take care of her, but not before I made sure to make desinfectant alcohol first and make sure the germs and bateria were killed. How? Well, I put wine and beer in a single barrel, added a whole small Jar of honey, and mixed until it blended. Then, I made a bunch of little holes to the barrel's cover, and left it in the hot summer sun for over the last week. While taking care of Lottie putting a huge cloth over my mouth to avoid being contaminated again.

When I opened the barrel, it smelled just like the modern disinfectant alcohol, which was enough for me to say, 'it can be used now.' And quickly put some of it in a bowl, and then made my way to Lottie's room and started to sprinkle the smelly alcohol everywhere.

'W-what is that smell?!' Lottie covered her nose and herself with her covers. And then coughed a couple of times.

'Eh. . . The smell of the "bad airs" burning back to hell!' I exclaimed with a crazy smile.

Lottie looked at me as if I had gone mad. 'H-How can you be—' She coughed a couple more times. 'So-so sure?'

'Let's make a bet.' I proposed as I put the bowl in the table across Lottie's bed and opened the windows. 'If you don't feel better on the next, three days, I'll let you use the warehouse for your magical experiments for the summer. How does that sound?' I proposed. 'But, you must not lie nor make yourself sicker just to win this, understood?' I clarified. 'And, if I win, you'll help with some magic ideas that I've been thinking of. Sounds good?' I added.

Lottie bored her eyes and me and nodded. She clearly thought the smelly water was anything but useful.

Two days later. . .

'Hehe. . . Hehehehe. . . . . Hehehehehehehehehehehe. . .' Charlie started to laugh at his twin.

'I fail to see the amusement in this.' Lottie murmured to him without turning to see him.

As for me, well, I was actually smiling proudly. I was already giving her my drawings and ideas so she could make a few hypotheses of how it could work, while I got the rent from the apartment residents.

'HAHAHAAHAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!' Charlie now was plain laughing at his twin.

Liam laughed too, but mainly because Charlie's laugh was capable of making almost everyone laugh.

'Well, those are it. You don't need to look all of them at once, just can easily start with three and when I return, I'll help you.' I told Lottie while I put on a light shawl and left the house.

I walked to the apartment complex and found the ladies having a tea party. 'Hello ladies. I came to collect the rent.' I made myself known.

'Finally!' Ivy exclaimed taking her pouch out and taking out the coppers. 'Here you go, and thanks for giving me the gardener job too, it definetely gives me more income.' She thanked me feeling more relieved.

'No problem.' I nodded to her.

'Here you go.' Elara said putting the copper in my pouch, followed by Amandine and Mrs. Fallbell.

'My dear, please take it easy. You might feel better, but you still look pale.' Mrs. Fallbell added with a worried tone while taking my chin with her fingers.

'Thanks.' I sighed.

'Miss Baker.' The old librarian, the rich man and Michael called me as they made their way to where I was with money pouches on their hands. 'We were just walking to bring the money to you.' The old librarian told me.

'Oh, that is good.' I nodded to them and they came and put the correspondent money in my pouch. 'Thank you all.' I sighed tired. Maybe I should listen to Mrs. Fallbell and turn in early.

'My dear, how is the funeral plans going?' Mrs. Fallbell asked.

'They are going smoothly. Prim is already cremated and I payed extra for a beautiful salted box for her ashes, and the funeral shall be set this Sunday in the morning.' I let them know stretching a bit. 'After that, I think I will bury her and plant a walnut tree on top of her.' I suggested them.

'Well, walnuts were Prim's favorite.' Elara recounted. 'I believe she would have like it.' She smiled at me.

I nodded in agreement. 'Anyway, I will have the restaurant closed for a few more days, but feel free to come and ask for food if needed.' I let them them know and then turned to see Michael. 'Don't worry, you are not unemployed yet, I actually want to create more buildings so you'll definetely be getting the experience your searching for.' I let Michael know as I was leaving.

'Yes!' Michael exclaimed excitedly and nodded.

I waved at everybody goodbye and left the apartment complex and made my way home yet again.
