Chapter 664: No Meaningless Matches
November 27th, Olympic Park Stadium
The fifth round of the 2018-2019 UEFA Champions League group stage was underway. With Manchester United having already secured both qualification for the knockout stage and the top spot in Group F, Mourinho once again rotated his squad extensively, leaving even Bruno Fernandes on the bench.
In contrast, their opponents, Lyon, approached this match with utmost seriousness.
After four matches, Lyon had only managed three draws and one loss, sitting third in the group due to goal difference. They faced an uphill battle to qualify and could not afford a loss in this match, as it would almost certainly end their hopes of advancing.
A Heated Start
The match began with Lyon, playing at home, launching aggressive attacks. Utilizing the speed and individual skills of forward Memphis Depay, a former Manchester United player, Lyon created immediate threats.
In the 2nd and 4th minutes, they came close to scoring. On one occasion, a through ball nearly resulted in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Lindelöf's decisive sliding tackle in the box averted the danger.
United soon stabilized, leveraging their overall strength to control the tempo and defend effectively against Lyon's wide plays. This forced Lyon's attacks to fizzle out, becoming far less threatening.
In the first ten minutes, United managed only one shot on goal—a strike from Mahrez that posed no real danger. Meanwhile, Lyon's star forwards—Fekir, Cornet, and Depay—found themselves effectively neutralized by United's tight defense, particularly Ashley Young's relentless marking of Fekir.
Tactical Chess
Both teams employed highly targeted strategies, resulting in a cagey and intense but somewhat uneventful match. Each side sought to exploit openings while minimizing mistakes.
The breakthrough came in the 31st minute.
Right-back Diogo Dalot carried the ball past the halfway line and passed it to Mata in central midfield. Mata pushed forward and suddenly switched the play to the left, finding Lingard.
Lingard, tightly marked by Lyon's right-back Rafael, attempted a cross. The ball deflected off Rafael's foot and landed near the left side of Lyon's penalty area instead of reaching McTominay.
Mahrez darted in from behind, controlled the ball expertly, and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot that flew past the goalkeeper and into the net.
1-0 to Manchester United!
Mahrez's teammates rushed to celebrate with him on the sidelines, forming a jubilant huddle. From the bench, Bruno leapt to his feet, clapping vigorously.
"Beautiful strike!" Bruno exclaimed.
Indeed, while the goal seemed to stem from a defensive error, Mahrez's exceptional technique was key. He controlled the ball with precision, avoiding the need for adjustment, and struck before Lyon's defenders could react.
Halftime Adjustments
Manchester United carried their slim lead into the halftime break. Mourinho praised the team's performance but urged them to maintain their intensity and push for another goal.
Lyon, trailing but not panicked, resumed the second half with more offensive intent. Left wing-back Ferland Mendy began pushing further forward to join attacks, while Rafael on the right was instructed to focus more on defense after being repeatedly tested in the first half.
Lyon Push Forward
In the 56th minute, Lyon's Mendy surged down the left flank and delivered a dangerous cross into the box. United's Chris Smalling failed to clear the ball cleanly, leading to chaos in the penalty area. Fortunately for United, Depay was slow to react, and his eventual shot was blocked by Smalling's body.
Just four minutes later, Mendy and Fekir combined on the left again. Fekir's diagonal pass into the box found Cornet, who rose to challenge Smalling and directed a header narrowly wide of the post.
Lyon's relentless pressure was causing issues for United's defense, particularly Dalot, who was struggling to handle the repeated surges from Mendy.
"We need to pin Mendy back," Mourinho said, shaking his head.
Changes Bring Results
In the 65th minute, Mourinho made two substitutions: Cancelo replaced Dalot, and Bruno Fernandes came on for Mata.
The impact was immediate.
In the 67th minute, United intercepted a lateral pass from Lyon in midfield. Ashley Young aggressively won the ball and pushed forward down the left flank, dodging an attempted tackle before passing centrally to Bruno.
Surrounded by defenders, Bruno shielded the ball and quickly laid it off to Mahrez, who sent it to the right wing.
Lingard collected the pass, cut inside, and passed to Cancelo, who made a charging run down the touchline. Lyon's Mendy tracked Cancelo closely, forcing him to stop abruptly and play the ball back.
Bruno received the return pass, glanced up, and delivered a low, fast cross into the penalty area. McTominay, positioned between two Lyon defenders, controlled the ball, turned, and fired a thunderous shot past the goalkeeper.
2-0!
The away fans erupted in cheers, chanting the names of McTominay and Bruno. Mourinho applauded emphatically from the sideline, clearly delighted with his team's performance.
Dominance Sealed
Despite Lyon's best efforts to respond, United's defensive adjustments and increased control of the midfield stifled any further chances.
When the final whistle blew, the scoreline remained 2-0 in favor of Manchester United.
This victory extended their unbeaten run in the Champions League to 18 matches and reinforced their dominance in Group F, solidifying their position at the top.
A Complete Performance
Bruno's cameo performance was widely praised, particularly his pinpoint assist for McTominay's goal. Comparisons were even drawn to David Beckham's legendary crossing ability.
"In that moment, it was as if Bruno channeled Beckham himself," one commentator remarked.
Meanwhile, McTominay's strength and clinical finishing earned him comparisons to Zlatan Ibrahimović. The 22-year-old Scot's growth into a reliable attacking force was becoming increasingly evident.
With another commanding display, Manchester United showed once again why they were among Europe's elite, refusing to take even "meaningless" matches lightly.
