Ramorino and Mazzini went through great effort to gather some of the people back, but the originally planned 800-strong team had dwindled to just 400. What's more absurd is, by the time the expedition force set off, there were 400 people, but before they even left Switzerland, half had already fled, leaving less than 200 by the time they reached the Italian border.
