Mark Jackson gave his mentor a sidelong glance and complained, "Stu, if you love thinking about basketball development so much, why not become the NBA president?"

Stu Jackson paused, then responded, "You make a bit of sense... maybe in a few years when I'm fired by the team, I'll apply to Stern?"

Mark Jackson: "Haha, that's a good idea. Being our team's head coach isn't easy; every few years we switch people, but the NBA president doesn't change for ten years, so you wouldn't have to worry about losing your job every day."

Future NBA head coach only saw it as a joke, while future NBA vice president took it quite seriously...
