Other than the dagger's sharp point, Maple Syrup didn't touch her at all, yet Rita could clearly feel the heavy, stifling rejection and hatred pressing in from behind.

And still, at this exact moment, she asked if Rita had anything left to say.

What did she want to hear? Begging? Weakness? An explanation? An apology?

Rita couldn't give her any of that.

Rita stopped leaning away from the dagger. Her eyes slid sideways to the edge of her vision, landing on that streak of red wing.

"Looks like that blessing we made at fifteen only reached me."

If she could do it again, ten times, a hundred times, a thousand times, she would still make the same choice.

She regretted it, but she didn't repent.
