Chapter 85 - INTO THE BITING CHILL

The silence after Neji finished speaking—after the words "Tetsu no Kuni" were declared—was sharp and final.

Everyone knew the talking was over; only moving mattered now.

Day 1: The Ascent into the Highlands

The group started moving right away. Sasuke took the lead, of course. He pointed his hand up and north toward the jagged, high mountains. Neji walked right behind him, keeping watch with his Byakugan scanning the high ground.

Lee was in the middle, practically buzzing with energy, whispering something about the great challenge of the mountain path.

Naruto walked near the center, next to Sakura. He kept looking ahead at Mini Sasuke, who was holding Hinata's hand. The little boy was quiet, looking around with big, wide eyes.

Naruto thought, 'The kid must think we're all too serious. But we have to be serious when facing Iwagakure along with the other nations and the broken timeline.'

The air got thin quickly, and the ground was terrible. They were in the Rocky Highlands—all loose dirt and sharp, hard stones. Walking felt slow and unnatural because they had to save their chakra.

"Hey, Sasuke! Are we sure we can't just run for a bit? We could get there faster," Naruto called out, kicking a loose stone that bounced down the slope.

Sasuke didn't even turn his head. "We save our energy, Naruto. This ground is too tricky. We keep the slow pace."

Sakura agreed. "He's right. If we go too fast, someone will twist an ankle on these rocks. Look how rough the ground is."

The sun was high around noon. The dry, thin air and the wind made the dust feel hot, but the lack of air itself felt strange. The sunlight bounced off the light-colored stones, making everything bright and hard to look at.

They stopped briefly at a tiny, weak stream—one of the few scarce water sources they saw all day. Sasuke let them drink, but strictly managed the amount.

"This is all the water we get until we find another source," Neji ordered. "Drink carefully."

Naruto thought, 'This water tastes like dirt. Why can't we at least find a big stream? We need better food and better water than this.'

The rest of the day was hard walking. The biggest problem was just the uneven ground.

Tenten and Karin helped warn everyone about loose rocks that could make them fall.

By late afternoon, the wind suddenly changed. It became instantly cold, carrying a deep chill.

Naruto thought, 'This place is tricky. One moment it's hot dust, the next minute it's freezing cold. Tetsu no Kuni must be very cold.'

Lee suddenly pointed up at the sharp mountain peaks. "Look! The magnificent wild mountain goats! They are a sign of youthful strength!"

But the animals were too far away. The group spent the last hour before sunset hunting small game like hares and birds, but they were hard to find.

As soon as the sun went down, the temperature dropped fast. It was a cold that went deep into the bones.

They stopped in a wide, shallow overhang in a huge rock face.

The night cold was intense, so they had to build a fire. Sakura immediately treated the small cuts Lee got from the rough rock. Hinata helped comfort Mini Sasuke. The little boy looked tired and scared.

Ino and Karin helped prepare the meal. They had managed to find some sparse berries and roots, and someone caught a few fish from the stream, which they fried over the small fire. It wasn't much, but it was hot food.

As they ate, the mood was quiet, focused on survival.

"This fire is important, Sakura-chan," Naruto said, warming his hands. "It's cold enough out there that we need it."

Ino nodded. "We need to save the wood. It's dry here now, but finding dry wood will be much harder when we get into the snowy mountains."

Neji stood guard near the entrance, his Byakugan scanning the dark ridges. He stood completely still, like a statue.

Sasuke sat across the fire, cleaning his kunai. The only sound was the crackle of the fire and the dusty wind whistling around the rock overhang. They rotated the watch, knowing they couldn't relax too much.

Naruto thought, 'We made it through. We're all together. This is hard, but we can handle it. We just need to keep going.'

Day 2: The Grinding Pace

The morning of Day 2 started before the sun did. The cold from the night was thick and biting, making the first few steps feel stiff and slow.

Naruto thought, 'Every day starts cold. I wish I had a thicker jacket. This orange thing isn't built for mountain climbing.'

They ate a few of the dry roots saved from the night before. Everyone was feeling the difficulty of the scarce water sources. Even though they had strict orders to ration, they were all thirsty.

They continued their slow, steady pace upward into the Rocky Highlands. The sun came up, making the air thin and dusty again.

Sasuke was still in the lead, his eyes constantly watching the path. Today, they moved across even rougher ground. It was full of loose rocks that moved under their feet.

"Watch the footing!" Tenten called out loudly from the middle of the line. She was good at spotting danger in the terrain.

Lee was still energetic, but even he had to slow down to focus on the footing. He nearly slipped twice, and both times, Neji gave him a cold, silent stare.

Naruto thought, 'Even Gejimayu is having trouble. This ground is awful. It's like walking on a million marbles. I bet Iwagakure ninja hate walking in these borders and mountains too.'

They didn't see any streams all morning. The dry, thin air made the dust worse. They had to stop often to rest, not because they were tired, but because the altitude was making the air hard to breathe for some, and they needed to save energy.

Around lunchtime, Naruto was starving. They had to rely on a few apples that Sakura had managed to save in her pack.

"Are we going to hunt anything, Sasuke?" Naruto asked. "I'm really hungry, and apples don't fill you up for long."

"We will hunt when we find game," Sasuke answered simply. "Until then, we move."

They saw a few wild mountain goats in the afternoon, but they were too fast, disappearing over the peaks.

The atmosphere was quiet. Everyone was focused on rationing their sips of water and avoiding a fall. The biggest challenge wasn't fighting an enemy, but fighting the landscape itself.

Day 3: The Edge of the High Ground

Day 3 was a repeat of the difficult climb, but now they were reaching the highest point of the Rocky Highlands.

The wind was constant today, a harsh, dusty wind that made their eyes dry out. They had to constantly pull their collars up over their noses to avoid breathing in the dust.

Karin had to stop once to adjust her glasses and complain about the dirt.

"This is terrible! Why do we have to walk through so much rock and dust?"

" Our chakra is for combat, Karin," Neji said without turning. "And we save yours for healing."

This day, they were lucky. Late in the morning, they found a small, hidden cave where a thin but clean stream of water was flowing. They quickly drank and filled their bamboo bottles fully.

Naruto thought, 'Thank goodness for clean water! I was starting to taste dirt every time I swallowed. Now we can finally move properly.'

With their bottles full, the group felt a lift in their spirits. They ate their last apple pieces and pushed forward.

As the sun began to drop toward the horizon, they reached a high ridge. From there, they could see the next part of their journey. The land below them was still rocky, but in the distance, the mountains looked different—darker, with shades of white.

"Look," Sakura whispered, pointing forward. "We're leaving the dry rock. It looks colder ahead."

They set up camp under a large overhang. The night cold hit them fast and hard.

They were fortunate that Ino and Hinata had managed to catch a few small hares just before dusk.

They fried the meat over a fire. The meal was small, but the hot meat gave them the strength they needed.

Naruto thought, 'Tomorrow, we go down into the next part of the journey. It looks like the cold will get worse, but we made it through the worst of the rocks. We just have to keep moving toward Tetsu no Kuni.'

Day 4: Descent and the Biting Chill

The morning of Day 4 was the coldest they had woken up to yet. They were still high up, and the air was heavy with moisture, not dust.

Naruto thought, 'This is a different kind of cold. It's not just dry; it feels wet and sharp, like someone is poking you with a needle.'

After a quick, cold meal of the last pieces of dried meat, they started their descent. The ground was still rough, but less rocky and more dirt, covered in short, dry scrub brush.

They were leaving the dry Rocky Highlands and heading toward the colder foothills.

The change was immediate. The wind grew sharper, cutting through their clothes.

"The air is changing quickly," Sakura said, rubbing her arms. "The moisture level is much higher than the highlands. We need to watch our clothes and sandals—wet fabric will speed up the cold."

Sasuke, now leading the path down through the scrub brush, seemed to be moving faster. He was reading the new terrain, looking for a break in the trees.

The daylight hours felt shorter today. Even at noon, the sun seemed weaker, struggling to break through the gray air.

They soon started seeing patches of frost clinging to the shadows and the few patches of grass. The frost was thick and white, appearing even before dawn had fully passed.

"Look at that, Sasuke!" Lee exclaimed, pointing to a rock covered in white ice. "The power of winter is testing our youth!"

"It's not a test, Lee, it's a problem," Neji corrected him sternly. "These patches of frost mean the ground is freezing hard. We need to watch for ice and potential freezing of our water supply overnight."

The environment was already presenting new problems.

Naruto thought, 'The animals are gone. Where did all the hares go? We need to find food soon, or we'll be fighting on empty stomachs.'

Indeed, the animals became scarcer. They spent nearly two hours trying to track anything, but the hunters—Sasuke, Naruto, and Lee—came up empty.

The creatures seemed to have retreated deep into the ground or migrated away from the growing chill.

By late afternoon, the biting chill was constant. Naruto kept swinging his arms and stomping his feet to stay warm.

Sakura knelt to check the temperature of a small pool of water. "The nights are going to be freezing from now on. We have a high frostbite risk if we don't find better ways to cover our hands and feet. Our standard gear isn't built for this kind of persistent cold."

The team knew they were walking into deep winter. Finding dry firewood was already proving difficult in the damp foothills. They had to break apart dead branches, hoping the centers were dry enough to catch fire.

As the sun disappeared early, casting long, purple shadows, they found a place to camp among some short, thick pine trees. The sense of danger was less about Iwagakure ninja for the moment, and more about the simple fact of staying alive in the cold.

The chill of the fourth night had been relentless. Leaving them stiff and aching in the thin light of morning. Everyone was focused on the cold, knowing their standard ninja gear was failing against the mountain air.

Naruto thought, 'I can barely feel my ears. If we don't get some warm clothes soon, we'll turn into ice statues before we reach Tetsu no Kuni.'

They walked for several hours through the cold foothills. Then, unexpectedly,a small cluster of wooden buildings appeared through the thin pine trees. Tenten stopped and pointed ahead through the thin pine trees.

"A settlement!" she whispered, relief clear in her voice.

Sasuke immediately held up a hand, stopping the group.

"Stop. If we go in, we have to hide who we are. We need warmer clothes, or someone will get sick."

"He's right," Sakura-chan agreed, shivering slightly. "Our bright ninja outfits are too visible, and the cold is already hurting us. We need warm cloaks and gloves."

Neji scanned the area. "Our Konoha headbands must be hidden right now. We cannot show where we are from."

Ino spoke up. "Whose bag is the safest? Mine is too full."

Hinata sighed. "Mine too. Too many apples tools."

They quickly put all eight of their metal Konoha forehead protectors into Tenten's biggest pack.

Everyone was taking off their headbands to hide them in Tenten's bag. Sakura looked over at Karin and noticed her forehead was bare.

"Karin-san....."
