My Life as A Death Guard
Chapter 509: Assault from the Death Guard
Vengeful Spirit
Garro swung his greatsword, the enemy's screams and blood erupting in a spray. He drew his bolter, its muzzle spitting flames as he tore a bloody path through the assault force.
Behind him, the Fourth Horseman, which had slammed directly into the Vengeful Spirit's flank, groaned in agony. The immense airflow created by the pressure differential was violently trying to eject it, but the magnetic locks on its hull held it firmly to the Vengeful Spirit's deck.
Countless Sons of Horus poured from the shattered corridors, stepping over the corpses from the initial impact—an endless tide. Yet the vanguard Death Guard held their ground, refusing to budge. As time wore on, reinforcements from the Death Guard also arrived aboard the Vengeful Spirit.
At this moment, with the Fourth Horseman—which had rammed into the Vengeful Spirit's port side—serving as the focal point, countless Death Guard ships charged toward the Vengeful Spirit. Though their hulls were not as suited for piercing enemy ships as the Fourth Horseman's, they still slammed into the Vengeful Spirit with an unstoppable momentum.
Other Death Guard landed, significantly easing the pressure on the vanguard led by Garro.
Garro stepped aside, allowing the Dreadnought beside him to unleash a torrent of fire and ammunition upon the Sons of Horus. The twin-linked heavy bolter roared, its muzzle flashes forming a continuous line of fire.
"Forward!"
As the Sons of Horus' second wave began to falter, Garro decisively issued his command. He led the 7th Company, advancing deeper into the Vengeful Spirit.
Mortarion's orders were simple: find him and support his war against Horus. If they couldn't find him, they were to destroy as much of the Vengeful Spirit's equipment as possible.
For this campaign, Mortarion had committed five full companies of the Death Guard. On the Vengeful Spirit alone, three companies were simultaneously attempting to board.
The Second, Fifth, and Seventh Companies—a total of over 87,000 Space Marines—along with their attached support detachment, which comprised over 370,000 mortals.
They would faithfully execute the Primarch's orders, unleashing Mortarion's wrath upon the traitors!
Even in death, they would die at the feet of their Primarch!
There was no such thing as retreat! Every enemy they slew was a contribution to the Death Guard and the Imperium!
Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the Vengeful Spirit, the First and Sixth Companies—seventy-two thousand Space Marines—led a vast fleet in a naval engagement against the Warmaster's fleet, targeting the key vessels of the boarding fleet.
Within a mere twenty minutes, soldiers and warriors bearing the six-spiked skull armbands began to seep into the Sons of Horus Legion through the breaches in the Vengeful Spirit.
They fought the Sons of Horus, they fought daemons from the Warp, they fought the Auxilia and Servitors. All who were not Death Guard, all who had betrayed the Imperium, were to be slain!
In an instant, the gunfire and the clash of blades echoed through the Vengeful Spirit's corridors, which were as intricate and dense as a network of veins.
Explosions erupted. Under the cover of the Death Guard, the Hound of Hades deftly planted charges, intent on destroying everything aboard the Vengeful Spirit. Even in the cramped engine rooms where they risked becoming wedged in the piping, any Hound who successfully set a charge but found themselves unable to escape to safety would detonate it without hesitation.
They had never intended to return alive.
Besides, to the Pale King as he was now, their deaths would only serve to offer him more strength.
Countless Auxilia, mortal soldiers raised in the harshest environments of Galaspar and the territories near Barbarus, expertly navigated the Vengeful Spirit's side corridors and conduits, planting explosives.
The Death Guard in Terminator Armour held the corridors, their heavy plates flashing as countless shots sparked against them. The Death Guard favored heavy armour, sacrificing agility to stand their ground in boarding actions, absorbing enemy fire head-on.
Yet, because the 7th Company consisted mostly of Terra veterans who eschewed defensive Terminator Armour, Garro's squad moved with a speed far greater than that of other Death Guard companies.
Soon, Garro keenly realized that the tremors coming from the surrounding walls had ceased. He understood that his squad had likely ventured deeper into the core area, and reinforcements from other Death Guard companies had yet to arrive.
"Stay alert!" Garro shouted. The 7th Company he commanded had not followed the Hound of Hades; these Terra veterans had their own preferences.
Compared to other Death Guard, their objective was clear—reach the Primarch's side and fight for him.
But as of now... Garro called out to his Father in his heart, but Mortarion's response was faint.
We might have taken the wrong path, Garro frowned, pondering whether to return to the intersection and choose another route, or continue forward?
They arrived at a hall that looked like it was hosting a small reception. To Garro's surprise, the Sons of Horus here were clad in Terminator Armour—Garro, who had once fought alongside the Luna Wolves, immediately recognized them as the Black Armour of the Sons of Horus First Company.
And if he saw the Black Legion...
Garro gripped his greatsword in silence. "Abaddon?"
The ranks of black-armored warriors parted to the sides. A man stepped out—taller, more handsome, his hair swept up into a high topknot.
"Long time no see, Garro," Abaddon said softly. "The acting Legion Master of the Death Guard. It's a surprise to see you here."
"I'm not surprised to see you," Garro replied curtly. "Seems I've come to the right place."
"You can't go any further," Abaddon said. "Go back, Garro."
Abaddon stared at Garro, his eyes filled with grim seriousness. "Garro. You're marching to your deaths. The gods have descended. Whether you or I are here... it means absolutely nothing."
Abaddon spread his arms wide, unarmed. He walked directly in front of Garro. Behind him, the Death Guard began chambering rounds, but Garro raised a hand, halting them.
Garro stared at Abaddon. Clad in Terminator Armour, Abaddon towered over the veteran Garro. Abaddon extended a hand and tapped Garro's chestplate.
"We were once brothers-in-arms, Garro. I remember your past glory well... I do not wish to fight you."
Garro's brow twitched. He reached out and grasped Abaddon's outstretched hand.
"When did you become so weak, Abaddon?!" Garro roared, violently twisting his body and slamming Abaddon's hand downward. Veins bulged on his arm as he threw his weight into the strike. Thud! Abaddon crashed heavily to the ground.
In that same instant, without a moment's hesitation, the Death Guard behind Garro opened fire. The Sons of Horus immediately returned fire. Abaddon roared to his feet, his power sword igniting with a blue glow.
"Now, tell me—Abaddon—" Garro bellowed, swinging his greatsword down at him. "Why did you betray us?!"
"The Sons of Horus never betrayed!" Abaddon's eyes burned with fury. "We are loyal to the Father!"
