Chapter 340 - They Counted the Fish Before They Counted the Dead

The living pocket moved before anyone reached for a scale.

Nera Holt ordered the slotted floor cleared. Olan Sorn opened the shore cord while the north and south pairs kept their own float lines slack. No rookery worker touched the other line, and neither human claimed the net.

Seven fish remained alive inside the release fold. Nera counted bodies. Olan counted the fold openings. Black-Crown's pair checked the north gap, and Split-Beak's pair checked the south gap under separate calls.

The first opening was too narrow for the largest fish. Olan stopped pulling before the body struck the cord.

"Wider by one hand," Nera said.

Olan changed his own shore knot. The north pair lifted its float after Black-Crown's answer. The south pair held position until Split-Beak answered separately.
