In the afternoon, the first class Wade and his friends had was Muggle Studies.
In the past, this subject was not very popular among students. Most wizards were unwilling to spend time learning about another group in the world and even thought the school had no reason to offer such a course.
Meanwhile, Muggle-born students did not feel the need to take the class either—some of the content in the textbooks even made them feel insulted.
Just listen to the name—Muggle Studies—as if Muggles were some kind of brainless wild animals.
However, last semester, Professor Abigail's course made many students realize that Muggles were not as pitiful, weak, or foolish as they had previously thought.
As a result, the number of students enrolling in the class increased dramatically, even including a few Slytherins.
Professor Charity Burbage, who taught the subject, was absolutely delighted.
She had golden hair and beamed as she watched the students walk into the classroom. she clapped her hands together and greeted them enthusiastically.
"Welcome—welcome, children! Welcome to my class!"
Professor Burbage cheerfully said:
"This is the first time so many students have chosen Muggle Studies. Let me see… 28 of you! I'm so happy that so many young witches and wizards in the wizarding world want to learn about Muggles!"
"I know that some of you may have previously received incorrect information. Perhaps someone told you that Muggles are all stupid and inferior. But that is not true. There are many intelligent, noble, and brave individuals among Muggles."
"Maybe someone also told you that Muggles are cruel and obsessed with killing, and that wizards have been persecuted by them. This is also incorrect—just like in the wizarding world, there are both good and bad people among Muggles."
"Muggles and wizards are not all that different. We should respect them and treat them as equals, which will also benefit our own development as wizards…"
As Professor Burbage spoke passionately at the front of the class, some students showed expressions of disdain.
"I think choosing this course was a mistake," Millicent, a Slytherin student, muttered to the person next to her.
"What is this professor even talking about? Muggles don't even know that magic exists. They're laughably stupid. How could they ever be equal to us?"
Her companion nodded in agreement and added, "I only came to this class to learn about their dangerous weapons. Who cares how Muggles live in their homes?"
The textbook for this class was Home Life and Social Habits of British Muggles.
Millicent flipped through the pages carelessly and scoffed when she saw colorful pictures of driver's licenses, electric lights, washing machines, televisions, and cars—there wasn't even a single handgun pictured. She snorted in disdain.
Professor Burbage continued, "Now, let's turn to page five in our textbooks and start by learning how Muggle families are formed…"
The classroom filled with the sound of pages turning, but a few students remained motionless.
Their dissatisfaction was practically written all over their faces.
However, Professor Burbage didn't notice—she was carefully unfolding a few sheets of paper, enlarging them, and sticking them to the blackboard so that all the students could see them clearly.
"A family is, of course, built upon a marriage filled with love. If Muggles want to get married, they not only need a wedding but must also register with the government."
"These are the documents they need to submit when registering—birth certificates, driver's licenses, utility bills. If they are foreign Muggles, they also need to provide a passport. After registering their marriage, the Muggle government issues them a marriage certificate..."
"Schools and marriage are important bonds that form families. I truly hope that in the future, more wizards will marry Muggles and even werewolves. This way, we will gain a deeper understanding of each other and reduce the chances of war..."
"Screech—"
Just as Professor Burbage was speaking enthusiastically, a loud and jarring noise suddenly echoed through the classroom.
Millicent deliberately pushed her chair back with great force and slowly stood up. Professor Burbage looked at her in shock.
"Professor, I'm not feeling well. May I be excused?" Millicent said coldly. "I think I need to go to the hospital wing."
She didn't look the slightest bit unwell, but Professor Burbage hesitated and said, "O-Okay..."
As soon as she finished speaking, four or five other students stood up in unison.
"Professor, I don't feel well either."
"My stomach hurts."
"I need to go to the bathroom, Professor."
"I feel like throwing up… Maybe it's because I heard the word 'werewolf' and got nauseous?"
They all casually came up with excuses, and without waiting for permission, they gathered their belongings and followed Millicent out of the classroom.
Most of them left their Muggle Studies textbooks behind.
The remaining students watched their departing figures—some looked tempted to follow, but after glancing at the professor, they didn't dare stand up.
Professor Burbage had clearly never encountered such a situation before. She stood there, flustered, and watched as a group of students left less than ten minutes into the lesson, unsure of what to do.
"Professor."
A voice came from the front row. Hermione had raised her hand. Professor Burbage turned to her anxiously and asked, "Granger, are you feeling unwell too?"
"It's time to continue the lesson, Professor," Hermione reminded her.
There was exhaustion on her face, but her expression was firm and determined. Seeing this, Professor Burbage steadied herself.
"Yes... yes, you're right. Let's look at this picture... This is a driver's license. Muggles must go through complex learning and exams before they can obtain this document, which allows them to drive..."
Professor Burbage continued her lecture hesitantly, stumbling over her words. It took her several minutes to regain her composure.
She knew far more about Muggles than most wizards—she even seemed to have lived in Muggle society for quite some time.
Unfortunately, her teaching style was rather dry, and the content focused on trivial aspects of daily life. The lesson was only slightly more engaging than those given by the ghost professor, Binns.
"Honestly, I kind of want to leave too."
Michael lowered his voice and whispered to Wade:
"I finished reading this book over the summer. Aside from the section on electricity, which was mildly interesting, the rest of it treats the reader like an idiot. My mom is a Muggle—she thought this was a joke book!"
"Wade, you definitely know more about Muggles than I do. Don't you find this boring? Why don't we submit a request after class and drop this course?"
Although students had already submitted their course selection forms last semester, they still had a chance to make changes during the first week of the new term.
Additionally, after completing a full academic year, students could revise their selections before starting fourth year. They could drop previously chosen subjects or pick up new ones.
Wade also found Muggle Studies uninteresting. But without enrolling in every possible subject, the Time-Turner wouldn't have ended up in his hands.
He shook his head. "If you want to drop it, go ahead and apply, but I'm going to continue."
Michael glanced at him, and his eyes briefly caught the golden chain that had suddenly appeared around Wade's neck.
