Chapter 20 - 19: Scarecrow I

Soren knew that the drive from Sioux Falls to Burkitsville was going to be a long one, but that didn't stop him from getting into his car and driving there directly. He recalled the faces of the people he commonly spoke to prior to his sudden ejection and they didn't think he was dead or gone as one neighbor explained that they thought he was on a long vacation. It wasn't until they saw his truck in his driveway that he noticed Soren came back and told him that they hoped he enjoyed his long vacation before Soren realized that was how the System explained his sudden disappearance and return.

He told them that he had a nice relaxing vacation before he got kidnapped and stuck in a white room for a few months, but was glad to be back. The neighbor, when they heard that, was shocked, but expressed their happiness of his return too before going about their day.

As for Soren, he remembered that he'd need to prepare ahead of time for the people of Burkitsville. They were old pagan worshippers for an old norse god of harvest that actively practiced human sacrifice of one male and female per year, but Soren could feel in his bones that the god he'd eventually have to face wouldn't be able to kill him nor would the townsfolk. That didn't mean he could go there without his wand or his Hunters gear.

He packed his gear in his [Inventory] while hiding his wand in his sleeve in case he would need it against his enemies and to protect the Winchesters from the townsfolk along with the old god. Just like with the Wendigo, he knew that there would be a Hunter's Lamp waiting for him there yet he hoped that he wouldn't be cucked all over again from Chuck's interference again. When he got all prepared to his own satisfaction, Soren got into his car and started the long drive there.

It was only when, after driving through the night and day to get there, he decided to fully check the quest details.

Quest: Scarecrow

For generations after first settling in the area which is now called Burkitsville, Indiana, the townsfolk have been living in plenty. Unlike most people in the modern age who worship the Judean-Christian God, these townsfolk still practice worshipping an old norse god of plenty who had been bound to an ancient tree and sacrificing one male and female per year to sustain their unnatural crop harvest. Just like in canon, Sam and Dean have split ways for a time.

Your task is to aid Dean Winchester and Emily Jorgeson in stopping the townsfolk's sacrifice and ending the reign of the Vanir god of fertility over the townsfolk for good.

1) Arrive in Burkitsville, Indiana before Dean: 0/1

2) Act like a visiting tourist to the locals: 0/1

"So," Soren murmured as he read through the quest details, "I have to deal with no variation of that situation? Well, I know that if a townsperson decides to sacrifice me to appease that god of theirs, I'm using the Killing Curse on them after the Cruciatus. I'm not wasting my weapons from the Dream on them."

He was currently in a small rest stop a couple of miles outside of Burkitsville when he checked the quest details. Soren wasn't as stupid or as fortunate as the Winchesters are with Chuck, but he also wasn't going to fall for the same old tricks again and again. The wake-up call had been brutal and cleared him of the illusion of peace within this new world he lived in now, but it had been needed he realized.

Sighing for a moment and checking his calendar on his phone, Soren saw that he made good time. He arrived within two days of Dean's arrival into town and seemed to be right at the start of the townspeople's panic for sacrifices.

From this, he knew that he'd need to be extremely careful and wary of the townspeople so that they don't attempt to use him in their sacrifice. Of course, he couldn't actively predict their choices despite his foreknowledge of the situation, but he still had advantages that could prove helpful for Dean and Sam in the future. One such advantage is his current job as a fully-powered lawyer that worked for a nationally-recognized law firm.

But that is for later.

He got back on the road into Burkitsville and, when he passed the town line, the quest objective for being in town before Dean was completed. Soren allowed himself a small smile as he decided to check out the local shops and wares before looking at the local mechanic shop. Every fan of the show knew that the Burkitsville mechanic shop is where Dean starts his investigation and, while it was very clumsy work, he managed to end the reign for good.

As he pulled into the town proper, Soren immediately noticed how the townsfolk were slowly tensing. This, to him, was an obvious tell that they were anxious about their future harvest season considering they have kept up this tradition for generations.

"They all know what they are doing is wrong," Soren thought to himself as he pulled into the local cafe, "yet it is so ingrained into their culture that despite their more modern mindset, they can't help themselves. Each couple murdered for the sake of their harvest will inevitably draw attention even if the police force here is corrupt."

He also knew that this was purely their ancestors' fault for enabling this tradition to keep going. People who believed in it and never thought of the inhumane cost would inevitably teach the younger generations about this view and imprint it deep in their consciousness solely due to the benefits it brings. Soren had seen plenty of idealistic fools back in his original world bring about ruin and bloodshed just because they had the power to do so.

It was also the type of bloodshed that couldn't ever be purged with religious fervor and sacred rites as those stains went deep into the soul itself.

As he got out of his car and walked into the cafe, some onlookers felt a chill down their spines when they looked at him. None of the townsfolk at this time knew that things were going to be very different for their humdrum little town and that a Apex Hunter had arrived to disrupt their livelihood forever.
