Inside a SHIELD command tent, screens flickered with static as the storm above the town grew worse. Agents shouted updates, relaying sightings of two unknown hostiles moving through the streets.
Phil Coulson stood at the center, arms crossed, eyes on the feed. "We've got civilians panicking across six blocks. Move the evacuation faster."
Alex stood beside him, watching quietly. His eyes locked on one of the figures—an armored construct walking through fire—and then on the larger shadow forming in the storm.
Phil glanced sideways. "You're seeing this too, right? Those things… they're not human."
Alex nodded. "One of them's from Asgard. That's Thor's fight—it's a test he has to face." His tone hardened as the second figure came into view: a horned beast covered in ice, every breath turning the air white. "But the other… that's different. Loki dragged it here. It doesn't belong. If I don't stop it, this whole town will be frozen before Thor even gets a chance."
Phil frowned. "You're going alone?"
Alex gave him a faint smirk. "That's the idea."
Before Coulson could reply, Alex stepped out. His form blurred into the storm and vanished from SHIELD's instruments.
Back in town, thunder rumbled as the armored monster marched down the street, its chestplate glowing brighter with each step. Fire trailed in its wake, burning holes into the pavement. The Warriors Three and Lady Sif braced for battle, while Jane, Erik, and Darcy scrambled for cover.
Then the second horror came. Ice slammed into the ground as something massive dropped from the storm. A horned beast made of frozen stone and jagged crystal roared, shaking the buildings around it. Each step it took spread frost across the street, freezing lamps, cars, and storefronts solid.
The Asgardians exchanged quick, grim looks—two enemies at once was almost impossible.
Thor stood frozen, his fists clenched, shame weighing heavier than instinct. He couldn't move.
The frost beast bellowed and charged. But before it reached the mortals, the sky cracked again. A dark figure landed hard in front of it, pavement shattering under his boots.
It was Alex.
The beast lowered its horn, swinging with crushing force. Alex raised one hand—the air rippled, and the impact stopped mid-swing. Frost shattered off the horn, spraying shards across the street.
Phil's voice came faintly through Alex's earpiece. "You're on the feed. Everyone can see this. Don't hold back."
Alex's eyes glowed faintly as he pushed the massive horn aside, forcing the beast back a step. "Good," he muttered. "Then they'll know someone's keeping this thing off them."
The ground cracked beneath him as he moved forward, squaring off against the monster.
The Warriors Three and Sif watched, stunned. He wasn't Asgardian, but he was holding back a beast that looked like it belonged in Jotunheim itself.
Meanwhile, the armored construct marched closer, fire glowing in its mask. Jane shouted for Thor, panic in her voice.
Sif glanced back. "Thor! This is the moment—stand up!"
But Thor still didn't move. Not until Jane's voice cut through again, terrified and desperate:
"Thor—please!"
The monster's mask opened, fire building for a deadly blast.
At last, Thor stepped forward.
And as Alex clashed with the frost beast on one end of town, the other battle began—the powerless Thor facing the armored weapon, about to prove if he had truly learned humility.
The frost beast roared, shaking the town. Its breath froze the air, turning the streets white with ice.
Alex stood firm, feet pressed into the cracked road. His eyes glowed faint gold and violet. Light and shadow swirled around him, making the storm above pause.
The monster charged, its horn swinging like a falling mountain. Alex caught it with one glowing hand of light, while his other hand—dark as night—grabbed its jaw and forced it aside. The street split under the impact.
The Warriors Three stared. Volstagg whispered, "By Odin's beard… he fights like two men at once."
But Sif watched closer. No—he was fighting like something greater.
Ice spires shot up to pierce Alex, but shadows wrapped around him and swallowed them. Then light burst out, burning the frost into mist.
"You don't belong here," Alex said, his voice cold. "Back to the dark you came from."
Light formed into one blade, shadow into another. With both, he slashed an X into the beast's chest. Cracks lit up and spread across its body. The monster tried to cover the street in ice, but Alex walked forward, each step melting the frost away.
He leapt, driving both blades into its chest.
The beast froze still—then shattered into shards of crystal and snow. The wave of frost broke apart, fading into steam.
Alex stood in the ruins, calm, his glow fading but still there.
Across town, Thor's shout echoed as he stood against the Destroyer, finally stepping in front of Jane.
Jane turned, eyes wide at what Alex had done. "Who is he?" she whispered.
Thor shook his head. "I don't know… only that he's one of my friends. He's been keeping an eye on me."
Sif stepped closer, her eyes still on Alex. "I have heard of them," she said softly. "Whispers in Asgard—of guardians who watch over Midgard in secret. If the stories are true… then he must be one of them."
Hope flickered in her voice for the first time since Odin had fallen into sleep.
Meanwhile the Destroyer also reached them.
The Destroyer stopped in the center of the street. Its chest glowed hotter and hotter, each step it took burning holes straight into the ground. The heat rolled off it in waves, and even from a distance the air shimmered.
Sif, Hogun, and Fandral stood shoulder to shoulder, weapons raised, but their faces showed the truth—they were not sure they could win this fight.
Volstagg muttered under his breath, "How in Odin's name do we stop that thing?"
The Destroyer's mask opened, fire beginning to gather inside.
Jane grabbed Thor's arm, her voice breaking. "Thor—please, do something!"
Thor looked down at her. For a moment he saw only her fear. Then he looked at the monster walking toward them and felt the weight of everything that had led him here—his arrogance, his banishment, Odin's disappointment. He thought of how he had failed everyone.
