Chapter 135 - Chapter 135: Prologue to Chunin Exam

From that quiet, moonlit confession, something beautiful bloomed.

Hand in hand, Naruto and Haku wandered through the softly lit streets of Konoha. The festival stalls had long been packed up, but the spirit of the village lingered—warm lights, laughter echoing from afar, and the soft sizzle of food carts wrapping up their final orders.

Naruto, as always, couldn't stop himself from being... well, Naruto.

He joked with the old dango vendor until the man nearly gave them dessert for free. He tried (and failed) to win a plushie for Haku at a nearly-abandoned game stall, pouting dramatically when he missed. She giggled until her sides hurt, the nervous weight she'd been carrying all day finally lifting like fog under sunlight.

For the first time in forever, Haku laughed like she used to when she was just a child—without fear, without guilt. The pain of her past, the weight of Zabuza's shadow, the hesitation around the girls Naruto already loved... all of it seemed so far away now.

Tonight, she wasn't a shadow.

She was his light.

They ate skewers and steamed buns, their conversation easy and full of smiles. Naruto kept teasing, and Haku kept blushing, but she gave it right back, her sass wrapped in silk and snow.

Eventually, they found themselves near a quiet part of the village—one of those peaceful paths lined with paper lanterns and sakura trees just beginning to bud again.

Haku leaned her head gently on Naruto's shoulder.

"Today was... the best day of my life," she said softly.

Naruto grinned, hands still in his pockets. "Then what about the day we met?"

Haku smiled. "That's the second best."

He nudged her playfully. "What about the day you came to Konoha?"

"Third—no wait, maybe that's second—wait..." She stopped, glaring up at him in mock offense. "You're doing this on purpose!"

Naruto turned, stepped in front of her, and gently caught her hand.

Then, tugging her closer, he leaned in, his voice low and sulky. "What if I am?"

Haku's breath hitched. His face was so close now... his warm breath brushing her cheeks, his eyes locked on hers with that mischievous sparkle that always made her heart flutter.

Then, wordlessly, they leaned in.

Their lips met.

Soft. Gentle. Warm.

Time didn't freeze this time—it melted. Around them, the world turned to starlight and sakura wind. Their first kiss wasn't stolen or shy—it was real, chosen, mutual.

When they pulled apart, a faint trail of warmth still lingered between them. A string of connection, delicate and glistening like silver thread.

Naruto smiled and said, "Let's go. There's still a bunch of places we haven't visited."

Haku laughed softly and nodded, her cheeks glowing like the twilight. "Okay."

So they walked, hand in hand. She didn't care where they went. All that mattered was that she was beside him—and she felt safe, like nothing in the world could go wrong. Even if the world ended tomorrow, she would carry this night as eternity in her heart.

But Haku wasn't one to wish for endings. She had sisters waiting. Mothers at home. A family she never thought she'd have. A warm place at the dinner table.

And that's where they went next.

Home.

The lights were on when they returned. Kushina had clearly made way too much food. Kana was setting the table. Sakura, Hinata, Ino, Karin, even Koyuki—they were all there.

The teasing began the moment the door opened.

"Oho~ someone's glowing!" Ino said, dramatically shielding her eyes.

Sakura nudged her. "Someone's lipstick is gone."

"Stop it!" Haku squeaked, blushing furiously, hiding behind Naruto.

Naruto just laughed. "You all are so nosy!"

But he was happy. Truly.

And so was she.

That night ended not with a grand farewell, but with laughter around the table, chopsticks clicking, and stories being told over rice bowls and miso soup. The kind of night that, years later, they'd all look back on and smile about.

The kind of night that felt like home.

Time, like a silent breeze through the Hidden Leaf, slipped past unnoticed.Mission after mission, scroll after scroll, Team 7 proved its mettle—growing faster than anyone could've guessed. Their bonds had deepened, their skills sharpened like whetstones grinding destiny.

But amidst the daily rhythms of shinobi life, a new excitement stirred.

Whispers of the Chunin Exams spread like wildfire across Konoha's streets, from the highest tower to the humblest dango shop. The next stage of many shinobi's journey... was approaching.

And this year?It wasn't just another exam. This time, Konoha was the host.

Unlike the secretive Jonin trials or the quiet passing of Genin from classroom to field, the Chunin Exams were a celebration—a grand stage of skill, strategy, and spectacle. It was one of the rare moments the shinobi world pulled back the curtain for the public to see.

Only the neighboring minor villages and Sunagakure had been invited this time—part of a tightening alliance after recent peace efforts between the two Hidden Villages.Suna would be sending their best. And so would Konoha.

The entire village felt it.

Shinobi teams across Konoha trained relentlessly under the stern eyes of their instructors. Sparring grounds echoed with the clash of kunai. Training posts splintered under fists. Tree bark bore the marks of chakra control exercises run over and over again.

The air itself buzzed with tension and anticipation.

Marketplaces bustled more than usual, with visiting merchants and tourists pouring in to witness the spectacle. Lanterns were being hung. Food vendors prepared festival batches. Tailors worked overtime, sewing special ceremonial robes and exam uniforms.

Even the ANBU had increased patrols.

The Hokage Tower was flooded with messengers, gate reports, and deployment orders. With so many foreigners streaming in, security had to be tighter than ever. Jonin and Chunin on long-term missions were summoned back. Special units were assigned to border control and intelligence monitoring.

Konoha was preparing.

For spectacle.For pressure.For the storm.

But for now, the skies were clear. The streets were alive. And in the quiet corners of the village, hopeful Genin like Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura stood at the edge of something greater.

Something that would test their hearts. And possibly change their fates.

Inside the quiet mission room, the air felt still—like a held breath.

Kakashi stood in front of his team, casual as ever, a folder in one hand and his ever-present slouch in the other.

He placed the file gently on the table with a soft thunk. It bore a crimson seal—the application form for the Chunin Exams.

"What do you want to do?" Kakashi asked, his tone light, but his gaze sharp beneath that single visible eye."Apply now, or wait for the next one?"

Naruto, who was lounging with his feet propped up on the bench, didn't even glance at the form. He scratched the back of his head and shrugged.

"Why are you asking us? Just submit it already."

Kakashi raised an eyebrow, mildly amused. "So, no objections then?"

Karin folded her arms, smirking confidently. "None. Let's do this."

Sasuke—calm but focused—

gave a small, silent nod. No hesitation. No fear. Just quiet resolve.

Kakashi smiled beneath his mask, a tiny curve only the trained could spot."Alright then," he said, slipping the folder back under his arm. "I'll submit it."

With that, he turned and left the room, his sandals soft against the wooden floor.

Outside, the sun filtered through the trees in golden strands.Inside, something shifted.

Their path had been chosen.

Meanwhile…

In the towering Hokage office, the wind rustled papers as Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, sat at his desk reviewing incoming applications. His expression was calm, but his eyes missed nothing. Every team's name carried weight. Every name, a future—some bright, some dark, all uncertain.
