Nina watched as confusion and hurt flashed across his face, and for a moment, her heart almost shattered.
"What? Nina… what are you saying? Why?" His voice rose slightly, a mix of disbelief and desperation.
She shook her head, biting her lip to keep herself from crying.
"It's not because of you. You're… you're amazing. You've always been amazing. But… I've changed. I've… realized things about myself that I can't ignore. I'm sorry."
Zack sat back, stunned.
His hands tightened on the table, jaw clenched, and for the first time she saw a shadow of vulnerability in the man she once loved.
His eyes searched hers for answers, for some indication that this wasn't real, that she hadn't meant it.
But she couldn't give him that hope.
"I… I don't understand," he whispered, voice thick with hurt. "We've been together for so long… and now… you're just leaving?"
