Morning sunlight filtered weakly through the heavy clouds, muted by the lingering rain. The storm had quieted during the night, leaving behind only the steady drip of water from the eaves of the mansion. The clock in the hallway struck nine.
Xavier stirred awake. His eyes adjusted slowly to the dim light, and the first thing he saw was Alvin, still curled up against him, lashes brushing pale cheeks, breath even.
Xavier smiled faintly. The sight warmed something deep in his chest. Without thinking, he leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to Alvin's forehead, then to the corner of his lips.
"Good morning, beloved," he whispered, though Alvin didn't stir.
Careful not to disturb him, Xavier slid from the bed. He washed up quickly in the bathroom, straightening his hair and splashing water across his face. The exhaustion of yesterday's battles lingered, but the flame within him felt steady now, giving him strength.
