"Well done, kid."
"Hahaha~~ You sea devils, tonight I'll tear you all apart! With me!"
Not far away, Captain Reggie saw Sato fighting so fiercely that he couldn't help but shout in praise. Then, laughing loudly, he charged with his Feraligatr and Crawdaunt straight into the densest cluster of Ghost-type Pokemon.
"Roooar!" ×2
Seeing Reggie throw himself into the fray, Feraligatr and Crawdaunt were clearly infected by his fighting spirit. They both roared, and their aged bodies seemed to regain youthful vigor, moving with startling agility.
At the same time, their aura grew sharper and heavier. In an instant, the oppressive force of an Elite-Four tier Pokemon burst from their bodies.
The battlefield was swarming with Ghost-types, but most were only level 20 to 30. The strongest one to appear so far was just a level 62 Gengar.
Even that Gengar, though, had already been defeated by Reggie's Crawdaunt with a single Night Slash.
Now that Feraligatr and Crawdaunt had burst forth with Elite-Four tier strength, they were like tigers among sheep. Under their devastating Dark-type attacks, Ghost-types were being torn apart in droves.
"Damn it, they're not so scary after all. Magnezone, use Thunderbolt, fry 'em all!"
"Let your fury loose, Camerupt! Use Fire Spin, burn those wretched ghosts to ash!"
"To hell with it! Tonight, I'll be a hero too. Persian, use Night Slash on that Banette that dared scare us just now!"
Watching Sato and Reggie crush the wild Ghost-types like they were nothing, the sailors and Trainers on deck found their fear vanishing.
In fact, the crisis stirred their blood. One by one, they stood tall, commanding their Pokemon in a desperate counterattack.
The truth was, most Trainers here had no real experience fighting vicious wild Ghost-types. Their fear was what made them falter, unable to bring out even half their normal battle performance.
Now, without that fear holding them back, many Ghost-types who couldn't withstand a direct fight were swiftly overwhelmed.
The battle shifted. Where moments ago the humans were being suppressed, now the wild Ghost-types were being beaten down across the deck.
But the eerie ghost ship cloaked in fog still loomed close, spewing forth an endless stream of wild Ghost-types.
Low-level Pokemon swarmed out relentlessly, while stronger ones began to appear as well. Soon, six Ghost-types above level 60, all pseudo Elite-Four level, ganged up on Reggie's Feraligatr and Crawdaunt.
Sato's situation wasn't looking good either. His earlier performance had drawn too much attention, and now at least fifteen Ghost-types between level 30 and 40 had surrounded him.
If not for nearby Trainers rushing to help, he might have been forced to reveal his psychic powers outright.
Even so, six Ghost-types were still pressing him hard.
One level 38 Banette used its stealth to slip past Tentacruel, sneaking right up behind Sato. Just as he opened his mouth to issue a command, the Banette leapt from the shadows, claws glowing with Shadow Claw, aimed straight at his skull.
But before it could land the blow—
Sato's eyes flashed blue. Five glowing, greenish-blue tentacles from Tentacruel suddenly shot out, wrapping the Banette tightly and halting its advance.
The next instant, Tentacruel unleashed Giga Drain. The Banette let out a shriek of pain, while Tentacruel's wounds began to heal.
The Banette was stronger—seven levels higher than Tentacruel—so it wasn't defeated that easily. It thrashed violently in resistance.
Yet no matter how it slashed with Shadow Claw, it couldn't harm the tentacles restraining it.
That was because earlier, Sato had ordered Tentacruel to copy a nearby Trainer's Raticate using Reflect Type, temporarily gaining the Normal typing.
With that, the Ghosts' favorite attacks were useless against him.
Frustrated, the cornered Banette's crimson eyes flared bright. It tried to use Curse, ready to sacrifice itself out of spite.
But before the move could trigger, Sato commanded through telepathy, and Tentacruel hurled it like a ball—straight into the path of an incoming Shadow Ball from a level 35 Haunter.
The Haunter's attack smashed into the Banette with terrifying force, exploiting its type weakness. Already wounded, the level 38 Banette was left crippled.
Then Lanturn finished it with a precise Electro Ball. The Banette collapsed, defeated.
But danger still lingered. A level 34 Haunter and a level 36 Misdreavus seized the moment, firing off quick Shadow Balls. Both struck Lanturn hard, making it cry out in pain.
In the very next second, Tentacruel launched two Water Pulses at Lanturn.
As the water struck, Lanturn's body glowed with a watery blue light—its Water Absorb ability instantly restoring its health.
Revitalized, Lanturn released a massive bolt of lightning from its glowing antenna. The Thunderbolt slammed directly into the soaked level 34 Haunter that had earlier been hit by Soak.
The super-effective strike dropped the Haunter instantly.
The battle was brutal, but wild Pokemon lacked the strategy and coordination of trained ones.
At last, under Sato's careful command, Tentacruel and Lanturn defeated the six Ghost-types pressing them.
Battle is the greatest catalyst for growth. After downing so many enemies, Tentacruel and Lanturn's levels rose to 33 and 32 respectively.
Even Shellder, who'd mostly been tagging along, managed to score several finishing blows with its Icicle Spear. Thanks to its Skill Link ability, it leveled up from 17 to 20.
