Flannery and Roxanne were not specially trained soldiers — they were just two ordinary young women who happened to possess extensive knowledge about Pokémon.

Naturally, their running speed couldn't compare to that of the burly bucktoothed man and the obese man chasing behind them. And now that they were dragging along an injured blond man, their movement speed had slowed even further.

"Roxanne, take him and run! I'll hold them off!"

Seeing that their pursuers were about to catch up, Flannery immediately stepped forward, turning to face the oncoming enemies while shouting back at Roxanne.

Roxanne nodded without hesitation, taking the blond man from Flannery's grasp and continuing to run forward.

"Come out, Torkoal! Use your strongest Flame Wheel to form a wall of fire!"

Once Roxanne and the blond man were far enough away, Flannery released her second-strongest Pokémon — a Level 45 Torkoal — and commanded it to attack.

As soon as Torkoal appeared, steam began to billow from the furnace-like shell on its back as the rain cooled its fiery core. Its body temperature dropped sharply — but upon hearing Flannery's command, blue flames ignited from its vents, the heat quickly surging again. Then, with a deep bellow, a massive spiral of fire burst from its mouth.

Although the power of Flame Wheel was weakened by the rain, the bucktoothed man and the obese man were still flesh and blood. Seeing Torkoal's attack form a blazing wall in their path, they both screeched to a halt, unwilling to charge straight into the flames.

"Looks like this little girl specializes in Fire-type Pokémon — no wonder she's so fiery herself," the bucktoothed man sneered, his tone lecherous as he eyed Flannery standing in the rain.

"But today's just not your lucky day. Be smart and surrender. Quagsire — Surf! Put out that fire!"

His face hardened, and he issued the command coldly.

At his words, Quagsire's hands glowed blue as it slammed them against the ground. In an instant, the rainwater pooling across the road surged together. Within seconds, under the power of Surf, a wave mixed with mud and debris formed and crashed into Torkoal's wall of flame.

With the rain further empowering the Water-type move, the fiery barrier was instantly extinguished.

"Torkoal! Don't hold back — show them the results of our month of training! Use Flame Spin!"

As the wave roared toward them, Flannery gritted her teeth and leapt onto a nearby tree to avoid the incoming surge, shouting her next command.

"Coooaaaal!"

Torkoal's red eyes flashed. Steam and smoke hissed from its shell as a shrill whistle escaped its nostrils. Blue fire erupted once more from its vents, and with a powerful jump, Torkoal propelled itself into the air. Blue flames burst from the cracks of its shell, and — to Flannery's delight — it actually began to hover in midair using the force of the fire.

This strange form of flight allowed Torkoal to narrowly dodge Quagsire's Surf.

But Flannery wasn't done yet. Still airborne, Torkoal tucked itself into its shell and began spinning rapidly. A blast of blue fire shot from the rear of the shell — and in the next second, Torkoal became a blazing wheel of fire, roaring through the rain as it dove straight toward Breloom below.

From liftoff to impact, the entire sequence took less than two seconds. And with the steam from the quenched flames obscuring the view, the obese man didn't even have time to react.

Faced with Torkoal's Flame Spin, an attack that combined Overheat with speed, Breloom had no choice but to hastily use Protect.

A green energy barrier shimmered into existence around it, blocking the fiery assault — but the heat radiating from Torkoal's spinning form was so intense that the air itself warped. Even with Protect active, Breloom felt as though it had been thrown into a furnace.

"Quagsire! Use Water Pulse!"

The bucktoothed man finally recovered from his shock and ordered a counterattack.

A blast of water-energy slammed into Torkoal, erupting in a violent explosion. The fire-type was blown backward, its attack halted.

But just as Quagsire and the now-enraged Breloom prepared to finish off the injured Torkoal, a Graveler and a Golem suddenly rolled in from behind the two men, their rocky bodies spinning at high speed as they charged straight toward them.

At the same time, four purple-glowing tendrils shot out from the nearby undergrowth — two striking at Quagsire, and two whipping toward Breloom.

"Dig to evade!"

"Mach Punch! Smash them apart!"

Though startled by the sudden ambush, the two men reacted quickly. They dodged the rolling boulders while commanding their Pokémon to counter.

Quagsire immediately dove underground with Dig, narrowly avoiding the purple tendrils, while Breloom spun around and shattered the incoming attacks with a swift Mach Punch.

But the ambush wasn't over. Moments later, five chilling ice spikes shot out from the grass behind Breloom, flying toward it at high speed.

The obese man's Breloom was strong — a well-trained Level 51 Pokémon, skilled in both Mach Punch and Iron Tail.

Seeing no room to dodge, it swung its now metallic tail with lightning speed, shattering all five ice spikes midair.

However, in focusing on the attack from behind, Breloom failed to notice the danger ahead — the two tendrils that had missed Quagsire had now turned toward it.

Before it could react, both tendrils struck Breloom squarely, whipping it through the air with tremendous force.
