Chapter 28 - Chapter 28

I was worried about Rhoda's threat, but that didn't stop me from going to work. I needed the money; my future depended on it—not just mine alone. My baby's too.

"It's morning, and you seem to be dozing off," Xavier's voice caught me off guard. I flinched and then looked up at him.

"I wasn't dozing off," I protested, blinking my eyes rapidly. "I was just trying to sort out this file."

Xavier sighed. "She did it again?" He was referring to Maya.

I nodded reluctantly.

"Just send some over. I'll help you with them. I don't know why she's so bent on making life hell for you," he offered, his voice laced with concern.

"She just hates me," I retorted, shaking my head in frustration.

"Hey, Violet!" that familiar, annoying voice snarled. Rhoda. What does she want from me now? She closed the door behind her as she walked to the table where I sat.

"I need to talk to you!" Her eyes narrowed, and her lips curled into a smirk.

Conversations with Rhoda were always about Mason, and right now, I didn't want to hear someone telling me to back off from someone I wasn't even interested in.

"What do you want?" I gritted my teeth defiantly.

"What do I want?" She scoffed, then slammed her hand on the table. "To talk to you, bitch!"

I sighed, exasperated. "You're creating a scene, Rhoda. Say whatever you want to say and leave."

Her eyes flickered to Xavier, and I realized she didn't want to talk in his presence.

"You can say whatever you want to say here," I insisted, trying to maintain my composure.

She smirked. "Violet, I didn't want to make this hard, but let's do it your way." She removed her hand from the table and smirked devilishly. "You know, I heard recently that the Luna of the Silvermoon pack is dead. Her pictures are everywhere." Her eyes narrowed as she spoke, a smirk still plastered on her face.

My heart thudded. What? I'm labeled dead? In as much as I didn't know where Rhoda was heading with this information, I needed to act like I didn't understand what she was saying. But then there was Xavier.

Oh damn! I should have just agreed to talk to her alone instead of pushing her on the reel.

"I don't know what you're talking about," I stuttered, even though I tried to sound confident.

I stared into her eyes. She was giving me that look; the look that said she knew who I was and had uncovered my deepest secret.

No, this can't happen. How did she know? If I excused myself now, it would seem all too suspicious. But then again, Xavier can't listen to what she's saying. I don't want the words spreading.

"Uhmm... Violet, I'll just go get some files. I'll be back," Xavier excused himself, giving me a caring look.

I nodded.

"I know your mission, Violet. But whatever you're planning won't work because you've stepped on the wrong toes," she whispered in my ear. No one else was in the office.

If this had to work, I had to deny knowing what she was talking about.

"I don't know what you're talking about, Rhoda. If this is about Mason, I've told you before, I've got nothing to do with him. Why don't you just leave me alone?" My voice pitched high as I spoke.

She gave a fake gasp. "Lying bitch!" She hit the table again.

"Is she aware this is an office?" I wondered. "If I must remind you, Rhoda, this is an office, and you can't just barge in and act like it's your house. What do you want?" I demanded more strictly this time.

She chuckled. "Oh yeah, you're right. Maybe I'm out of my mind because I can't stop thinking about why the Luna of the Silvermoon pack is in a rival pack, disguising!" Her eyes narrowed as she spoke.

Busted! How did she find out? I knew this was where she was heading. Grandma warned me that this was dangerous.

"I... I don't know what you're talking about," I stuttered.

"Cat got your tongue, Violet? You can't talk anymore and run that pretty, sharp-witted mouth of yours? You know, I suspected from the onset. Why else would you want everyone to notice you? I mean, all the charades and wanting Alpha Mason to notice you. The fight. I knew you weren't just a mere Omega. I suspected."

As much as I tried to appear brave, to deny that she had said the truth—aside from the part about trying to get Mason to notice me—I struggled.

"What? I have no idea what you're talking about," I argued weakly.

But then she snapped her fingers.

And before I could comprehend what was happening, the door opened. Two patrol men walked in.

"Take her!" she ordered.

I blinked. This wasn't a joke, was it?

"What have I done wrong? What's my offense?" I demanded, refusing to give in.

"She's a spy! I said take her!" Rhoda screamed.

Panic surged through me as the patrolmen advanced. I backed up against my desk, my mind racing for a way out.

"You can't do this!" I shouted, my voice trembling.

"I haven't done anything wrong!" Rhoda laughed, a cruel, mocking sound.

"Oh, but you have, Violet. You think you can come into our pack, pretend to be someone you're not, and get away with it? Think again."

The patrolmen grabbed my arms, their grips firm and unyielding. I struggled, but it was no use. They were too strong.
