At the border of Zone 3, Jacob Browne checked the lock of his apartment door for the fifth time that evening. During the long walk home from the military barracks of the 3rd base, he had the distinct impression that he was being followed; the hairs raising on the back of his neck, his skin crawling.
He backed away from the door and shook his head, no, there must be some other reason why his other teammates hadn't shown up for patrol that day. Maybe there was an illness spreading around that he simply hadn't been unlucky enough to catch.
'...lucky, lucky, lucky...'
Jacob gritted his teeth against the gnawing doubts in his mind and ignored the echo of that voice that had laughed so bitterly, before falling silent.
They hadn't even cried out after that.
As though they had lost all will even to react to the assault.
