"You can't handle this opponent. Leave it to me," Chris said to Latios, who had been teleported to safety by Gardevoir.
Latios, covered in wounds from the previous battle, was now being bathed in Gardevoir's Life Dew. The healing move worked its magic, and the legendary Pokemon's strength was recovering rapidly. Its bright red eyes studied Chris with an intelligent gaze, as if trying to read the human standing before it.
However, Latios remained silent about Chris's offer to take over the fight.
The dark Dragonite had turned around, its scarlet vertical pupils gleaming with an unnatural black mist as it searched for both Chris and Latios. The corruption that had taken hold of the Dragon-type Pokemon was clearly visible in those twisted eyes.
As soon as it spotted them, the dark Dragonite would attack without hesitation.
Spreading its small wings, the bulky yet surprisingly agile Pokemon launched itself forward like a dark meteor, hurtling directly toward Chris's position with frightening speed.
Chris reached into his belt and pulled out a Premier Ball. "This will be your first real battle with me. Let me see what you're capable of!"
The white Premier Ball opened with a flash of light, and a large white feline Pokemon emerged from within.
Zeraora appeared on the battlefield, floating gracefully in mid-air. Thunder crackled across its sleek form as an electric shield manifested around it. Chris recognized this defensive technique as something Zeraora had developed independently - an electric-type move of its own creation.
"Use Plasma Fists!" Chris commanded.
"Ola!" Zeraora responded with enthusiasm, electrical energy surging through its eyes as its fighting spirit blazed like fire.
Facing the charging dark Dragonite, Zeraora's arms became wrapped in brilliant white lightning. The surging plasma energy burst forth, creating the faint outline of twisted white wings behind the Electric-type Pokemon.
In the next instant, the white spark meteor and the black shadow collided violently in mid-air.
"BOOM!"
The impact was tremendous, like a comet crashing into the earth. Black and white energies clashed, darkness fighting against light as the opposing forces created violent friction in the air.
The outcome of this fierce exchange was decided within two seconds.
The dark Dragonite was driven straight into the ground with tremendous force. Where it landed, the earth collapsed in a radius of nearly a kilometer. Spider web-like cracks spread outward from the impact point, and water began surging up from the fissures like fountains, each stream dancing with white sparks of electricity.
"Impressive power," Chris commented with satisfaction.
Zeraora had only recently become his Pokemon and hadn't yet fully mastered the intricacies of move execution. However, Chris had equipped it with a special item - Zapdos's Treasure.
Zapdos's Treasure possessed a unique effect: it doubled the power and range of electric-type moves, and every minute that passed, the power and range of the next electric move would be doubled again.
Just the base doubling effect was enough to increase Zeraora's combat effectiveness several times over. Combined with the additional power boost that accumulated over time, this Plasma Fists had delivered four times the normal damage of the attack.
This was why Chris had chosen to use Plasma Fists instead of a move that would have better type effectiveness against Dragonite's dual Dragon and Flying typing.
Latios watched from the sidelines, clearly amazed by Zeraora's performance. The same dark Dragonite that had overwhelmed Latios was now being dominated in direct combat.
"Graaah!"
A harsh roar echoed across the battlefield as the dark Dragonite burst through the ground debris. However, it didn't immediately launch another attack. Instead, it bent its back, supporting itself with one hand against the ground while breathing heavily. Even for a corrupted Pokemon, withstanding a quadruple-powered Plasma Fists without losing consciousness was an incredible feat of endurance.
"It didn't go down in one hit?" Chris expressed mild surprise.
Dark Pokemon were known for their doubled effectiveness when using dark-type moves, but this didn't grant them any special resistances. The dark Dragonite's natural typing of Dragon and Flying meant it had no inherent resistance to electric attacks.
This meant that Plasma Fists had delivered its full quadruple damage, making the Pokemon's survival even more impressive.
Since one move hadn't been enough to end the battle, Chris decided to try a different approach.
"Gardevoir, use Rain Dance," he commanded.
Gardevoir raised its hands gracefully, and the already darkened sky immediately began to pour with heavy rain. The weather move would set up perfect conditions for what came next.
"Zeraora, use Thunder!" Chris called out.
"Oww!" Zeraora let out a fierce snarl in response.
"CRACK!" Dark clouds rolled across the sky as white lightning began to gather within them.
Following Zeraora's roar, brilliant white thunder began to descend from the storm clouds above. The attack was mighty and overwhelming, like the gates of heaven had opened and a celestial waterfall was cascading down.
A massive waterfall of white lightning now hung suspended in the sky, ready to strike.
Dark Pokemon became fighting machines due to their corrupted minds, but their survival instincts remained intact. In fact, these instincts often became even sharper in their darkened state.
The dark Dragonite immediately sensed the threat of the lightning gathering above. A black storm of energy swirled around its body as it attempted to dodge away from the danger zone.
Unfortunately for the corrupted Pokemon, escape was impossible.
This was Thunder being used on a rainy day - a combination that guaranteed the move would never miss its target. Moreover, it was being used by Zeraora again, with the continued blessing of Zapdos's Treasure amplifying its power.
"BOOM!"
The dark Dragonite, despite its attempt to flee, was immediately engulfed by the white lightning waterfall.
"Zzzzzzt!"
The sound of electrical current spread across the entire battlefield. Anyone who dared to look in their direction would have their vision completely overwhelmed by the blinding display of thunder and lightning.
When the white lightning in the dark clouds finally dissipated, all that remained was a scorched and blackened crater in the ground. In the center of this charred earth, the dark Dragonite lay motionless, clearly defeated and unable to continue fighting. Black smoke still rose from its body, evidence of the devastating electrical assault it had endured.
There was no question that the Pokemon had lost its ability to battle, as a system notification appeared before Chris's eyes.
[Defeated Dragonite (Dark Pokemon) LV89, Zeraora gained 10,247 experience points]
"As expected from a level 89 Pokemon - over ten thousand experience points in one battle. This is quite rewarding," Chris remarked with satisfaction.
He approached the fallen dark Dragonite, which had been brought here by a Totem Salamence. Taking out a Premier Ball, he prepared to attempt a capture.
Even though it was a corrupted Pokemon, this was genuine dark corruption, different from the artificially created Dark Aerodactyl he had encountered before. There was a possibility that even after being caught, it would remain an emotionless fighting machine.
However, this was a level 89 Dragonite - an incredibly powerful Pokemon. Even if he couldn't develop a proper bond with it to make it truly his partner, it could still serve as a valuable asset in battle. Its combat effectiveness had been demonstrated when it overwhelmed the level 75 Latios.
What Chris didn't expect was that when the Premier Ball struck the Dragonite, it emitted a red light but failed to initiate the capture process. The dark Dragonite's body glowed with a resistant red aura that repelled the Premier Ball's attempt at subjugation.
This could only mean one thing - the dark Dragonite was already someone else's Pokemon.
Chris's expression grew serious as the implications became clear. "The dark Dragonite has already been captured by someone?"
"So this group of dark Pokemon was deliberately controlled by a trainer?"
The realization was troubling. If someone was intentionally corrupting and controlling Pokemon, turning them into these emotionless fighting machines, then there was a much larger conspiracy at work than he had initially suspected. The question now was who was behind this operation and what their ultimate goal might be.
The battle was over, but Chris knew that this victory had revealed a much more dangerous situation than he had originally anticipated. Someone with the power to corrupt legendary-level Pokemon was operating in the shadows, and Chris had just stepped into the middle of their schemes.
