On the eastern island, Chris and Victor faced each other across the battlefield.
"I've wanted to compete with you for a long time. I'm getting tired of seeing the same old faces of Roy and Tate," Victor said, producing a pipe from somewhere and taking a long puff.
"I've been curious about the skill level of warriors from the previous generation," Chris replied loudly. He wasn't just making conversation - he genuinely wanted to test himself against Victor.
The previous generation had produced numerous talented trainers. For someone to maintain an Elite Four position at age seventy as a remnant of that era spoke volumes. Calling Victor a top powerhouse of his generation wouldn't be an exaggeration.
"Haha!" Victor grinned immediately, his eyes flashing as he suggested, "Then... how about we have a wild battle?"
Chris observed the old man's thin frame. Despite containing terrifying explosive power, it resembled a candle in the wind that wouldn't burn much longer.
Wait! I'm starting to sound like a villain, putting death flags on my opponent.
"If you want to battle wildly, I'll gladly oblige," Chris said, loosening his muscles.
"Then change the rules to Wild Battle format," Victor instructed the referee robot.
"Order received. Changing battle parameters," the mechanical referee responded in its synthesized voice.
"Battle rules updated to Wild Battle format. Beginning match."
The robot immediately began officiating.
"Confirming identities... Trainer Chris versus Trainer Victor. The match will use Wild Battle rules. Six Pokémon available per side. Unlimited substitution opportunities. Battle ends when all Pokémon on one side lose fighting ability or the trainer can no longer continue. Both parties, please release your Pokémon."
Chris and Victor simultaneously launched Poké Balls skyward.
Silver light exploded as two Pokémon materialized on the battlefield.
Chris's opening choice was Gyarados.
With its massive frame, crimson scales, and fearsome demonic visage, the Red Gyarados's terrifying presence swept across the arena. Dark clouds gathered overhead, followed by light rainfall.
Victor was known as a Fighting-type Elite, though outsiders also called him a Ground-type specialist because he excelled with both types simultaneously. His trump cards belonged to both categories.
Against Gyarados's Flying/Water typing, Chris held significant advantage regardless of Victor's opening choice.
As Chris predicted, Victor sent out Rhyperior - a Ground/Rock type.
Perfect - Water attacks are super effective, four times damage.
"Confirming both sides ready," the mechanical referee announced. "Battle... begin!"
"Gyarados, Mean Look!" Chris struck first, but avoided immediate offense.
"Roaaaaar!" Red Gyarados bellowed, its massive copper-bell eyes fixed directly on Rhyperior.
Rhyperior immediately felt uncomfortable as a red aura surrounded its body. Until Red Gyarados fainted or left the battlefield, it couldn't retreat.
Victor seemed unconcerned, calmly drawing another Poké Ball and releasing it.
Kommo-o emerged.
This Kommo-o was slightly smaller than typical specimens, but despite its petite frame compared to Rhyperior, it radiated incomparable presence that rivaled Red Gyarados's intimidating aura.
Since its ability wasn't Intimidate, Red Gyarados couldn't overwhelm the opponent through pressure alone.
Unfortunately, this is a wild battle allowing normal substitutions. Otherwise, with this type advantage, I could have eliminated Rhyperior instantly in standard format.
Still, this wasn't a major problem.
"Surf!" Chris commanded.
Unable to retreat, Rhyperior was a sitting duck.
"Roaaaar!" Red Gyarados roared.
Blue energy erupted from beneath its body as seawater surged in all directions. The ocean a hundred meters away began churning, waves nearly engulfing the entire island.
Fighting on this small island gave Red Gyarados a significant home field advantage!
"Meteor Mash!" Victor countered.
"Stone Edge!" Victor followed with rapid commands.
Rhyperior crouched and punched the ground, causing rock pillars to erupt - not as an attack, but as transportation. A massive ten-meter pillar immediately launched it skyward, avoiding the wave bombardment.
Kommo-o showed no fear, its smaller size providing greater speed.
Following the Meteor Mash command, Kommo-o's body launched explosively forward. Its metal scale-covered fist gleamed brilliantly like a twinkling comet, charging straight into the overwhelming blue torrent.
One punch.
"BOOM!"
Light pierced through the torrent.
The wave's center bent and twisted, collapsing completely within moments as the water flow lost all power.
One punch shattered the entire Surf attack.
But as the water collapsed, a fierce teal light suddenly descended like an extremely sharp razor, slashing diagonally and striking Kommo-o's chest directly.
"CLANG!" A heavy metallic sound rang out.
Kommo-o crossed its arms to block at the last second, but the impact still sent it flying a hundred meters until it crashed through several trees before stopping.
The attacker was Mega Garchomp!
"CRACK!" Mega Garchomp roared, waving its twin giant scythes. Golden dragon eyes showed pride and coldness, as if telling Kommo-o: We're both Dragon-types, both pseudo-legendaries, both known as attack-oriented kings - but there are still hierarchies. Right now, I'm above and you're below!
Mega Garchomp leaned forward slowly, stepped lightly, and the ground instantly cracked as it shot forward like a cannonball.
With its upright tail fin and sharp scythes, it resembled the bomber aircraft that inspired its design - locked onto Kommo-o for devastating assault.
Victor pointed his left hand at Mega Garchomp.
"Hyper Beam!"
From atop the rock pillar, Rhyperior's Hyper Beam erupted without any charging time.
Rather than an armored tank, its positioning resembled a rock fortress with mounted cannons.
Simultaneously, Victor's right hand wasn't idle - he drew another Poké Ball and released it.
"Mist!"
A Mamoswine resembling a small mountain appeared, expelling a white orb from its mouth. Before it traveled far, the orb exploded suddenly, spreading mist across the entire battlefield.
