Gladion sat cross-legged. His eyes were closed. Beside him hovered Latios and Latias, the Eon Duo.
'Little brother, how many times do we have to tell you to meditate properly, without any thoughts in your mind?' Latios's voice was stern, his blue eyes narrowing as he floated closer to Gladion and looked him straight in the eyes.
Latias chimed in telepathically, her tone lighter but no less exasperated. 'I tell you, I don't know how you even managed to control your powers to this extent with your 'social much' lack of attention." She punctuated her words with a gentle whack of her wing against Gladion's shoulder.
The blow was meant to be playful, but it sent a jolt through him, stars bursting behind his eyelids as he winced. It was a gentle blow but not so gentle legendary Pokemon.
"Ow! Easy, Big sis!" Gladion rubbed his shoulder, "I'm trying, okay? So what if my mind wanders a bit?"
Latios's gaze didn't soften. "So what were you thinking about this time?"
Gladion leaned back against a rock, "Well, I was thinking maybe I should give Gwen the Gengar Mega Evolution stone. She'd be pretty mad if I gave Mom and Sabrina one and left her out."
Latios tilted his head, "And why haven't you given her one yet?"
Gladion snorted, his voice dripping with mock indignation. "Pfft, you kidding? If Gwen figures out Mega Evolution before me, I'll never hear the end of it. I can already hear her taunts—'Oh, brother, you've had these stones for years and couldn't pull it off? I did it in a week! Are you sure you're a genius? Blah blah blah!'" He mimicked her voice, pitching it high and nasally, flailing his hands as if to mimic not Gwen but a duck.
"She'd probably frame the moment and hang it over my head for the rest of my life. No thanks, I'd rather wrestle a Snorlax than deal with that."
Latias giggled, "You sure are competitive with your sister, little brother."
Gladion nodded, "That's why I want you two to help me Mega Evolve. I don't know why I'm failing. I'm sure my bonds with my Pokémon are strong, so why can't I do it? Mom was able to do it in a matter of hours."
"I know you know something that could help me Mega Evolve, and the reasons I'm struggling. Please, guide me."
'We will....What about your mother Erza? How is she doing and her progress with mega evolution?' Latias asked
"Well she's doing great. She has mastered the mega evolution with her Charizard and perform in command. She is even happier since I gave her the go-ahead to use Mega Evolution in her ace battle in a few months. She'll be the first to show the world Mega Evolution. I'd have loved to do it myself, but…" He trailed off, his smirk returning.
"It's better this way. People need to know I'm not the only one to fear in the Vortex family. Mom's already known as the Fire Witch, but with this, her reputation will soar."
Latias nodded, her eyes gleaming with approval. "Good. Strength of the family is your strength. Make sure to remember that. Now start meditating if you want to master Mega Evolution."
Latios said, "Now we are going to tell you why your mega evolution doesn't work. And why you need to meditate."
Latios and Latias exchanged a glance. Latios's voice took on a serious, mentor-like tone. "Gladion, your aura is unlike any human's we've met. It's vast, turbulent—like a storm contained within a vessel too small. That's why Mega Evolution eludes you. The Keystone and your Pokémon's bond are not the problem. It's you. Your psychic aura overwhelms the channel, flooding it until the resonance shatters before it can stabilize."
Latias's voice was gentler, but teasing. "In simple terms—you're too… much. Mega Evolution needs harmony, but your aura is like a wild orchestra playing every instrument at once. No wonder it breaks the melody."
Gladion's brow furrowed, processing their words. 'Too much? My aura's the problem?'
He'd always known his psychic abilities were exceptional, a gift. But he hadn't realize they could be a barrier.
Latios continued, "That's why we meditate together. To tame the aura, to teach you control. If you can steady your aura, your Pokémon will Mega Evolve."
Gladion frowned, "But I trained to control my psychic powers with Alakazam when I was younger. I've got this under wraps."
Latias snorted, her wings flapping dismissively. "What you learned to control was a mere trickle of your psychic aura. A pond compared to the ocean you have. You need to control the entire ocean, and then attempt to Mega Evolve your Pokémon. Your Pokémon must match the strength of your aura with their own. When they're equal, they Mega Evolve."
Gladion's mind clicked, 'Hmm, so in simple words, my psychic powers are too strong, and they don't match the aura strength of my Pokémon. It's just like the Dragon Ball series fusion thingy—both people have to release the same amount of ki to fuse together. I see, so that's how it is.'
He leaned forward, determination replacing his earlier frown. "Alright, let's get on with it."
Latios and Latias nodded. Latias said, "Now try to focus and for once stop your ridiculous dreaming about how you would dominate the world with money or how you would defeat every champion of the region all at once."
Gladion rubbed his head embarassed. Clearly Latios and Latias were reading his thoughts while helping him meditate. He wanted to complain about invasion of privacy but knew that he would just get another wing slap to his head so he kept his mouth shut.
