Chapter 31 - What if Piedra de la Luna

I was practicing ballet and I heard a banging on the door. I told Kiska to get it since the new butler was still acclimated. Roland volunteered to season her properly. I told him that I don't want someone to become an enemy. Oleg laughed so hard he fell off his chair. Roland rolled his eyes, "That is your over active imagination at work. We are professionals and we handle it accordingly." Kiska stuck his head in and mentioned that the burly Samoan man is requesting me to go with him on an expedition. Roland scrunched up his face as though he was trying to find the right words to say. He was about to say something when Eska grabbed him by his collar and dragged him out to have a polite conversation with our guest. I waved at the others to go and stop any form of escalation. Sure enough I heard yelling in Mexican and Samoan. The door slammed and someone cried out in pain. I guess Roland slammed the door on our guest's face. Igor was laughing like a maniac as he entered the room. He was struggling to breathe, "That was professional alright. Congratulations brother for proving that you are more immature than Sasha" Magna guards called to wish me a happy birthday. Chelsea came with bundles of bouquets. I asked the others to help her. Soon the penthouse resembled a meadow. Care packages came and one person sent a diamond necklace. Everyone sniffed it. It smelled like cinnamon. I called the building security and he explained that it was left outside. I raised my chin in a sudden movement. Oleg and Roland walked downstairs with Serena. I went to take an ice cold shower.

Serena was waiting inside while the others were outside as I dressed to go out. I was bored so I am going to the library. To pick up a few books. I picked up a flower print frock with flared sleeves that reaches the ankles. I braided my hair. I picked up a few flowers but changed my mind so I put the flowers on the bed. I walked out and Oleg being the head of security made it clear that the person who gave the necklace had left it on top of the mail box the moment the garage door opened. I wore gloves as I used a swab to brush over the top and had it sent to the alchemist committee otherwise known as the forensics department. Oleg asked politely, "Why did you swab it?" I smiled,"Cinnamon is used to mask the scent or taste of poison. I learnt it as a police officer." Roland stared in absolute disbelief. He retorted, "You are making that up." I threw the gloves in the trash. I cupped his face in my hands before I showed him the memories. He was shocked, "Abe made a big mistake when he passed the law forbidding you to have a normal career." I blushed pink and walked towards the front door. Oleg drove me to the library. I picked a book and sat down to read it on the front steps. I was enjoying the weather and the view. Children running around laughing on one side. A beautiful forest in the making on the other side. A mixture of birds, butterflies and bees flying in the air was beautiful. The cyclists were riding by. The elderly were conducting Tai chi and Qigong classes. Families were flying kites, using skipping rope and some were grilling meats. I heard someone mention a target being on sight. I decided that I had enough so I stepped down and hopped on my car. I asked Igor to contact the dark knights about a possible kidnapping in progress. Then I tapped the side of his head to show proof. He called it and the rest was handled by Derek, the Howler brothers and Chase.

I was eating at a newly opened restaurant called 'the twirling fork' when Derek came to have a word with Roland. The two spent some time talking before Roland stepped out. He wasn't in a good mood when he came back in. Oleg and the others listened carefully. I was walking back to the car when there was a commotion. Oleg and Roland swiftly nudged me towards the car and we drove off. After a few minutes a motorcade came as backup. It took me a minute to figure it out, "I am the target." Oleg grumbled, "Gold star. Let us do our job and please do not interfere." I sensed around and told him the safest exit. He took it and I heard someone swearing as I extended my senses. I gave them a thumbs up. Roland asked me what I was doing. I explained my heightened hearing so I can hear what the enemy is saying. They are trying to reroute us. If we fall for the trap then the car will be covered in bullets. The best way out is to switch cars. Roland called a buddy and we took a different route. We entered a parking lot and went up seven floors before the cars were switched. This time Roland was driving. Igor asked me if I knew who was the culprit. I extended my hearing to find out. One of the culprits said, "the code to send a signal out of Tsar is Sierra, Vista, Nevada, Yanki" I felt my limbs get cold. Serena shook me as though I had fallen into a trance. I saw myself in the mirror.

I looked as I did during my sick days. That made me feel angry. Oleg asked me nicely, "What's going on?" I muttered, "The corrupt October guards have infiltrated the city" There was a brief moment of pin drop silence. Then one by one everyone took turns saying a few bad words in their native languages before I told the dark knights who and where the bad guys were situated. I heard bangs and rapid fire from machine guns. What felt like a reenactment of a scene from possibly a world war the firing came to an abrupt end. The knights used stunners. They are metal eggs about an inch in diameter. They emit a signal in a particular frequency which incapacitates the human body while non-humans are unharmed. They were dragged to the deportation center and their belongings were searched properly. The dark knights and the alchemist committee were discussing the security of the city. They called Pearl in the hopes of getting a signal jammer or something to create an interference. They sent a few gizmos and I was told to stay at home. That would have been a good idea but before we reached the apartment someone used a bazooka and blew up my apartment. This was labeled as a terrorist attack and an assassination attempt. The perpetrator tried to sneak out but I zipped out and found her trying to climb down thirty flights of stairs. I grabbed her and zipped towards the holding cells. The dark knights were grateful.

I was taken to Kirigan and Kaz's new estate. It was a traditional gothic style mansion. The garden had night blooming flowers. The one by the front step was a mix of dark red roses and black roses. The servants were lined outside in a row. I was massaging my head. Roland inquired, "Why are all the servants outside? Is this some sort of corporal punishment?" I sighed, "This is to show security who is actually employed by this house. So under the times of duress if an assassin tries to sneak in pretending to be staff you can identify them as an intruder and cuff them without drama. This is not a drama nor punishment. This makes your job as my bodyguards easier." Oleg chuckled, "Remembering your days as police officer." I shrugged, "During my days as a rookie police officer sometime after as a homicide detective I have protected witnesses. They lived lavish mansions and the owner would bring out the staff so we could memorize their faces. Oftentimes someone would slip in and this recollection has saved my charge many times." Roland raised an eyebrow, "Charge?" I shrugged, "Police term for someone we protect." Serena smirked, "The dark Knight's loss is someone's gain." I did a quick look around and realised that someone had snuck in. Kirigan has OCD. His staff are always in pairs. Thirteen men and thirteen women. All have to be vampires. It is non-negotiable. I made a sound of impertinence and Roland asked me if I sensed a disturbance in the force. Everyone started laughing. I mentioned my theory and Roland told me to wait inside. He stepped outside and spoke in the unified language. It sounds like a mix between Eastern European and Arabic. The staff attacked the uninvited and threw him in the dungeon. I didn't even if dungeons were permitted outside of Central. Everyone spread out to find out if there were more of them and then I was invited in.

The news blared that the October guards had taken a hospital hostage. They demanded me in exchange for the continued existence of the others. I tried to go forward but the dark knights said they already got it handled. They released an odourless gas that lulled everyone to sleep. Drones were used to find explosive devices or any other surprises. None were discovered so they were apprehended and sent to the eviction centre. I asked the head of the department to ask them three questions. Who was helping them from the inside? What was their goal? Who else was in the city? She asked them and the answer was transmitted to the council. They were livid that Ute and Abe had ill feelings for me. Both were humanized and sent out of the city. Legally I am the one who is supposed to be the leader but I chose Sam and asked him to lead. I had seen first hand his firm justice and insightful actions. The council wanted answers, "Why Sam?" I grimaced, "The people think werewolves are unstable all thanks to Abe and I just trying to prove they are level headed." The Pretorian guards were grinning ear to ear as they bowed and began their search. My bodyguards were smiling as I walked past them. I insisted that she press them for answers. She discovered a traitor in the immigrations department and everyone stepped forward to prove their innocence. I told them it is not necessary. One bad fish doesn't mean everyone else is a traitor. They appreciated my confidence but still they proved their innocence before going back to work. The procedures unintentionally became a little stern.

The werewolves were interested in knowing who to trust. Mainly because some of them had spent time with people who have conveniently hid certain information redacted. That had resulted in loss of lives and trust. So for them this was a matter of integrity. I discovered that every clan of werewolves had sent one wolf for my protection. The twins were the exception. I like being mentally synchronized so they are informed of the situation by extension. I sat in the lobby feeling lonely. So Roland started his usual to crack me up. Alistair is his alpha. The man shook his head as he asked me if I wanted to replace him with someone else. I told he was fine. He takes the edge on occasions. The man in forties asked me if I was going to moonstone anytime soon. I told him about the situation here in Luna. Not to mention the idiot who is trying to level the east wall to let zombies in. According to his rambling zombies are a form of evolution and they deserve to be roaming the city just like us. Then I heard a million voices at once. I asked everyone to calm down. He is a psychiatric hospital getting treated but he has given the slip occasionally. So I am trying to find a way to adjust to my schedule to stop him. I was reminded about the law preventing me from joining law enforcement. I will have to pass the information. I showed them the incident involved the October guards. The swearing was so much I thought I should be in the bathtub for a month. A few apologized Abe's treachery. I said I trust them completely. I was trying to figure out how far the October guards have infiltrated the Tsar. The other werewolves promised to send their best investigators to search their respective district. I was walking towards the elevator I sensed the lunatic had escaped and was looking for a hardware store to buy the essentials. I was trying to figure out how to get my hands on him when I felt a firm grip on my shoulders. I turned to see security smiling. The nearest dark knight was the Howler brothers. I feel sorry for the hurt they are about to deliver. Kiska and Eska are gentler in comparison. The moment he was apprehended. I heard a bloodcurdling howl.
