Chapter 38 - What if Hospital

I got us out of school and was driving towards the woods. I heard a gunshot and had to turn around. I drove towards the city and everyone locked their doors. Weird thing is all these chompers made way to let us pass. We drove till we ran out of gas. I told the girls to stay where they are and lock the doors. Whatever happens I asked them not to open till I come back. I got out of a gas can and closed the back. Irene closed the door behind me. I sped around the city and filled the can with gas. I may be fast but this machine was deliberately slow. As soon as it was full I sped back and filled her up and went back for seconds. This will make sure I don't have to use them defenseless while scrounging around for essentials. The girls agreed and we drove off till we found a police barricade. The nice officers checked our temperature and told us to keep going forward. There was a hospital that they had cleared with all the necessary items. All survivors are being redirected there. I drove towards the hospital and felt a sense of Deja Vu. This was the hospital where I injected myself with the hybrid concoction. I blurted it out and the others told me to calm down. As we drove in we saw people arguing with soldiers. My brother was trying to reason with a uniform cop. Irene got impatient and hit the horn. The soldiers jumped out of the way and we drove in. The sound was muffled but I swore I heard someone say specimen collection. I wanted to empty my stomach on the nice clean seat. Sonja sensed something was off so she asked. I explained what I heard and she flipped. So did the others we got in and the doctors checked our temperature and ushered us in. We asked if they were going to let the soldiers in because we don't feel safe if they chose to stay. The doctor promised that the police will be in charge and we have nothing to worry about.

We were taken to the general ward and we left all our stuff in the small cupboard. One of the officers politely explained that we had to go to the lobby to get registered. The officials can get an accurate headcount. Then we will be assessed to see what we can do and divert us to our respective sectors. The head of the facility was a silver haired man. He wore an all black outfit with a long black overcoat. He looked like an old school Hollywood hunk with the palest blue eyes. With a subtle half-smile. He exuded a sense of calm with his stoic demeanor. He had a deep resonant voice which had a calm charisma that made everyone feel safe. Right next to him was Batou and Mom. Both looked tired yet happy to see so many people safe and sound. I politely pushed my way to the front. I waited till he finished his speech and I ran to mom's arms. She froze before she lit up. She hugged me warmly and asked me to stay close. I waved for my friends to come over and they stayed close by. Irene and Sonja were looking for their family. I promised to find them and bring them safely. I extend my senses. I found them not far from the prison. I zipped out and got them to the hospital. They had their usual exam and were sent to the lobby. The others found their families were settled in the prison. They won't be leaving unless the military says so. I wasn't having it so I walked over and used hypnosis to summon them over. The girls were happy whilst the soldiers weren't. I was upgraded to the private wards so mom can have a sense of peace. My uncle was in the ICU. He wasn't looking so good. He had to depart from his wacky primitive medication so his condition had weakened drastically. He was coughing up blood and spent a few hours unconscious. I tried to avoid him like crazy.

I was assigned to the kitchen along with my friends. Mom was on rotation with Batou as guards. We would peel vegetables or open cans. Then after each meal we would sweep and mop the floor. The blood bank was on the second floor. Only those with access can go there. It was going to be a problem since my feeding day was coming close. So I used invisibility to get in and acquire a few blood bags. I took it to the janitor's closet and ripped a section on top before drinking. Afterwards I took a moment to see the memories of the donors. Then I quietly walked over to the hazardous disposal area and got rid of the empty packets. Then I quietly walked back to my room. I pretended to sleep. The next morning the military came asking if they could set up shop. But the locals yelled that they will bring zombies with them so they are not welcome. There were those who left the prison because they are experimenting on these beasties. They want an actual safe zone. The military left dejected. I made it clear that they will blast the walls for the administrator's defiance. He had a word with the governor and they both concurred. The soldiers were allowed as long as they didn't bring zombies or scientists with them. The hospital became Tetra Headquarters. The basement was turned into the armory. Certain sectors were military only. Shaw was seen gliding along with his cult members. He had a different schedule so we never met. Some time after uncle J succumbed to his illness and died. His remains were cremated and scattered to the wind. I breathed a sigh of relief since uncle J would have mentioned that I wasn't going through gene therapy. The questions that follow won't be fun.

Then came the news the prison had a little snafu. They filled the containment block to capacity. Somehow the newly modified zombies got out and the survivors had decreased in number. The science department is demanding that we make room for them. Everyone said no. So they had to turn around and go to the silo. Irene and I made a bet on how long before the silo is no longer a safe place. She bet a month. Mine was six months. Mom asked me not to make jokes about the zombie situation. I cleared my throat. Irene explained that these people are pretending to make things better. All they want is to thin out the population. These beasties are helping the situation. Mom wanted to argue but a few nearby agreed with us so she let it go. I was clearing the yard when I heard a gunshot. I looked up to see Shaw by the door. His gun was smoking. He stared weirdly before he told me to go indoors. I walked in without arguing and moments later I heard a lot of gun fire. The door to the yard opens from the inside. So once they ran out of ammo they tried to open the door. I opened it to let them in. Shaw was outside as his team locked the door so I chose a different route to get him in. By the time I got to the only other door to the yard he was on top of a tree. He wasn't bitten but his friend wasn't so lucky. I casually walked out with an attitude and pushed almost all of them out and locked the door. I asked him to come down. He used the last of his ammunition as we headed back into the hospital. Once the door was locked he asked me how I managed to walk amongst them without problems. I explained my medical condition was the reason these things can't come near me. Like most creatures they feed in the healthy and ditch the sick. He breathed heavily, "So you look healthy on the outside but still sick on the inside?" I gave him an approving nod and a thumbs up before heading towards the kitchen. Shaw's friend asked him to end his misery and so he shot him in the head and chased after me. He explained that he was going to go get essentials for the survivors. Food and meds from other places. He was hoping that I would come too. I made it clear that I am not going to help with specimen collection. I specifically hate these things and I wish he would put every zombie in one place and blast them to kingdom come. He stood still for a moment and said nothing.

I reached the kitchen and started chopping onions. I hate those idiotic hacks since none of them work. I just put on swimming goggles and kept chopping till the cook said enough. Then I started a fresh batch. Irene laughed through her tears, "Seriously I wish vampires were allergic to onions instead of garlic." Sonja answered in a matter of fact tone, "Did you know that Chinese have a type of vampire? They are allergic to onions. They suck out life energy." I retorted, "Then I am glad we have these guys at least you can see when they attack. Imagine walking down the street and having your energy sucked out without seeing your assailant?" The others concurred. Daisy asked me if I was having garlic bread. I told her I would eat everyday without fail. I am more interested in tomorrow night's dinner which I am told includes steak. Shaw explained that he was told to go to a butcher shop and a steak house to get some meat. He would like some help. I asked him how I can carry an entire cow by myself. He said his team will handle it. My job is to make sure those things didn't attack his friends. Irene chuckled, "They pretend she doesn't exist so they simply walk past her and attack your friends. She is not interested so just go without her please." I started chopping like crazy and he walked away. Mom came while we were cooking soup. She asked me to come out for a moment and I realized Shaw tattled. So I walked out and gave a live demo. The hospital had records of me so the others couldn't say that I was a nonhuman entity. Some did stare apprehensively and others with hope. One even suggested that they take antigens from me and inject it into them. One of the doctors reminded them that I had a blood disorder so medically speaking they can't inject my blood into people and expect the same results. In fact because of my illness I am permanently ineligible for blood donation. A few expressed their displeasure but the doctor's word was final.

I went back to my duties in the kitchen and I started mopping the floor. The others helped too. We ate food with the staff and they went to sleep. I waited till they were asleep to go and get a few medical supplies. Sonja decided that she will find out how to draw blood so I won't have to steal from the blood bank. She went to work as a lab tech after the last one was eaten by a straggler. I went back to my chores until the elderly police asked me if I would go and get supplies. The army will stay to protect the people and I can go get what I can carry. I thought it was reasonable so I stepped out. I kept going down Flint street towards Marble Avenue till I found a toy shop. There was a decent sized wagon so I took it with me. I stopped by the steakhouse and collected different cuts of meat and brought them back. Then my next stop was a pharmacy and it took dozens of trips to empty. Then my last stop before boredom got the best of me was a clothing store and a canned goods place. I dragged everything with me and the men would let me in without question. One guy had an entire toilet paper roll worth of items. I told him to give it to the nearest black hole. I stopped shopping because I am bored. I went back to kitchen duties. A few days later I felt adventurous and head out for more stuff. I got several rolls of toilet paper, an entire box of cleaning liquid, a telescope, several packets of seeds and a taser. I took the taser and the telescope. The top floor was changed to be a greenhouse and a place the soldiers would keep an eye out for trouble. I asked permission to use the roof to watch the meteor shower. They gladly accepted.

As I was setting up the telescope I heard someone talk about using a shoulder mounted SAM. I quickly used the telescope and turned to the direction I heard the voice. I saw a man wielding a surface to air missile on his shoulder. I screamed and the nearest one pushed me aside and looked through. A sniper quickly switched directions and fired a kill shot. The guy fell down and someone sent drones to find any others with bright ideas. Everyone else was sent to the basement for safety. The telescope became a permanent fixture but I was allowed to use it to watch the meteor shower. The girls and I had fun. Mom took a moment to look through the glass too. Batou watched it for a moment and mentioned an accident he had as a kid. He said this event triggered him badly so he went downstairs without a second thought. Irene asked what happened. I explained, "He was going to his grandma's house and there was a rock slide. His car was buried underneath a tonne of rubble. Search and rescue at least a day to get him out. He is cluster phobic and he hates hurling rocks." Afterwards my telescope was officially military property. I tried to argue but mom overruled me. I got a new telescope on my next run but it is kept in my room. I realized that there are those who have a problem with survivors so they attack the hospital to kill us all. So far all have failed because they have placed hidden cameras everywhere so there will be no surprises. This means I can't flex my gifts even if I wanted to. Two years after the apocalypse the science department was screaming to come over so they can do experiments in peace. Apparently they have been moving from place to place only to leave six or five months later because of a breakout. But like I said everyone made it clear the scientists will be killed the moment they move in.
