Chapter 81 - CHAPTER 81 – ESCAPE

Bronwyn held on tightly to the rope as Olive continuously rose non-stop. due to the thick fog, we soon lost sight of her and could only see the rope that Bronwyn was holding.

"Are you okay?" – I asked.

Bronwyn gripped the rope tightly because she didn't seem to want to raise it much higher, besides, she was almost at the maximum of what the rope could provide in terms of length.

"Yes! Don't worry, I'm fine! It's just a little cold!" – Olive said from above.

We all sighed with relief when we heard her words. Thank goodness she was fine, I just hope she doesn't catch a cold considering how cold it is right now, because not only was it foggy, but it was also starting to rain and it was raining more and more.

"What do you see up there?" – Emma asked curiously.

"Give me a moment, the rain and wind make it difficult for me to see something; although at least up here there is no fog" – said Olive.

Apparently at that height, there was no longer fog, however, the rain blocked her view along with the wind, probably due to the speed at which the ship was moving.

We waited a few seconds, until...

"I see it. I see solid ground!" – Olive said enthusiastically.

We were all happy to hear this.

"In what direction?" - asked Bronwyn.

"We just have to turn a little to the right and then everything straight! We were doing pretty well!" – Olive said.

Apparently we were not entirely wrong with the course, however, we were still askew, so if it hadn't been for Olive, we would never have reached solid ground.

"I'll go and handle the helm!" – Millard said.

"I'll go with you!" – Hugh said.

They both left and turned the helm slightly to the right just as Olive had said.

"Is that okay?" – Hugh asked.

Apparently, he was acting as Millard's messenger, who didn't move just in case the ship had to turn more.

"Yes! Keep going in that direction!" – said Olive.

"Perfect! I'll let Millard know and tell him to keep the direction!" – Hugh said.

The swell, luckily, was not strong enough for us to be affected by it, maybe if we were in a smaller ship, like a boat, we would have had problems, but thanks to this huge ship, we hardly felt the force of the swell.

"Shouldn't we put her down?" – Claire asked.

"I think so. After all we're already going in the right direction" – Bronwyn nodded.

"No! Don't put me down yet! Keep me here until we are close to solid ground!" – said Olive.

"Are you sure? It's very cold and I'm afraid you'll catch a cold" – I said in a worried tone.

"Jacob is right, besides, at this time for one of our people to get sick is not something we can afford right now" – Emma nodded.

We don't know if the wights are chasing us or not, so if someone were to get sick, it would delay us a lot, although if the case arises... I will sacrifice myself so that they can escape. In addition, I am sure that I will be able to beat several wights at once. In fact, with my current strength, I am sure that I could easily beat a hollow in a 1 vs 1 and yes, I know that in my previous fight I needed help, but now I know the attack patterns of a hollow and if they all have the same attack pattern without taking into account no strategy... It will be easy to kill them if I dodge their attacks without letting them touch me.

"Don't worry, just let me stay a couple more minutes, until we're close. Then you can put me down" – said Olive.

Apparently, she wanted to stay a little longer to make sure Millard didn't stray from the course they were currently on.

A while passed since Olive was up and it was time to put her down because according to her, we would soon reach to solid ground. However, and according to her, in the distance, there were some people who would surely not take long to notice our presence.

"They must be wights! I can't believe they chased us here!" – Enoch said.

"It could also be normal people" - Hugh suggested.

"Normal people at this time of night on the beach? Use your brain!" – said Enoch.

"I think this time Enoch is right" - Emma said.

"This time? What do you mean by that?" – Enoch asked.

"If Enoch is right, when we arrive, we get off the ship as quickly as possible before they find out about our presence" - I said.

"And what good is that going to do? Have you seen the size of this ship? I don't think it will take them too long to realize that there is a huge ship on the beach" – said Enoch.

"Right, that's why we have to run, we have to run as faster as we can" – Olive nodded.

"Shouldn't we confront them? Even if they have guns, Jacob is immune to bullets and could handle them without problems" - Bronwyn asked.

"And give them the time to call more wights? I think this time the most prudent thing would be to run away" – Horace said.

"Also, I remind you that we are not immune to bullets" - Enoch added.

"This time Enoch is right. While it is true that I am immune to bullets, you are not, so we cannot risk them deciding to shoot any of you, unless I stayed to give you time to flee, in that case..." – I said.

"Rejected!" – all the girls said.

My proposal was completely rejected by all the women in the group for more than obvious reasons.

"Jacob, we are family or we are all saved or none of us; no sacrifices" – said Millard.

"That's right, we will all come out of this safe and sound and we will leave no one behind in the process" - Horace nodded.

"Exactly" - Hugh said.

Enoch said nothing, but his gaze said it all for him.

"Okay, then put some ladder or something, we'll go down shortly" – I nodded.

They are right, we are all family and we will all get out of this situation; together.

"Okay, let's go!" – Olive nodded.

Then, we looked for a way to get off the huge ship and it wasn't too difficult to find a way as there was a metal ladder on one side of the boat that would allow us to get off quickly and without problems.

"Ready?" – Emma said.

We were a few meters from the shore and it was time to get off the boat, so we all placed ourselves next to the stairs to be able to get off faster.

"Now!" – Emma said.

The ship had hit the sand, a sign that we had arrived, so without waiting a second longer, we quickly went down the stairs and ran in the opposite direction to where the men were.

"What was that?!" – said one of the wight in the distance.

"It's a ship! That means that they have arrived! Tell the other two, they've probably already gotten off the ship and run away into the woods!" – said the other wight.

Although we were far away, we could hear their words, not very well, but well enough to know that we had been discovered.

"Let's flee into the woods!" – Emma said.

"Haven't you heard that's precisely where they're going to go?!" – Enoch said.

"We don't have time to argue, we have to run to the forest. It's the only possible way out!" – I said.

On both sides there was a wide stretch of beach and behind it there was a dense forest, although it is true that there was also a path where normal people circulated, we would be easy prey if we went there, so the best option was to flee through the forest and try to mislead them.

"Come on, we'll try to lose them if they chase us!" – Bronwyn said.

We quickly fled into the forest and into it, but not long after we could hear several voices in the distance.

"They are footprints. They are here, in the forest!" – said a wight.

Suddenly, barking dogs began to be heard, barking that could be heard perfectly in the silent forest.

"Let the dogs locate them!" – one of them exclaimed.

"Shit! We have to run faster!" – I said.

Without thinking twice, I gestured to Bronwyn, who picked up the two twins and started running with them in both arms, while I picked up Claire (Olive run faster than I though) and started running the same way .

Claire and the twins were the slowest runners for obvious reasons and since Bronwyn was the strongest in the group in terms of physical strength, I instructed her to take the twins so that I could run faster, while I took care of Claire as I am the second strongest (as far as physical strength is concerned, I mean).

"Quick, the dogs smelled something over there!" – said a wight.

4 different dog barks were heard, indicating that there were 4 wights chasing us.

But no matter how much we ran, for as long as the dogs kept smelling our smell, the wights would keep chasing us.

"It's useless! We are getting more and more tired and they don't get tired! Besides, the dogs will continue to chase us no matter how much we run!" – Millard exclaimed.

"I have an idea! When I tell you, throw mud on you!" – I exclaimed.

"Mud? Why? I don't want to get my suit dirty with mud!" – Horace said.

"Just trust Jacob!" – Olive said.

"Okay, but I'll just stain my face!" – Horace nodded.

Do you really want to keep your suit clean even now? Anyway it doesn't matter, my plan is simple, I'll use my wind peculiarity to make as much noise as I can as far away from us. Then, we'll smear ourselves with the mud, which will camouflage our scent with the rest of the forest making the dogs unable to pick up our scent, however, we'll have to do it fast, for the distraction will not last long and the dogs will find our trail again.

"You have to be very fast! Ready?" – I said.

"Yes!" – they all said.

After that, I made the biggest, sharpest wind blade I could make right now and used my "Fury" peculiarity to increase my strength and launch my attack as far away from us as I could.
