Chapter 16 - Deja Vu

James stood frozen, his gaze locked on the malevolent glow emanating from the bush.

The creature's form remained hidden, an enigma shrouded in shadow, but those piercing yellow eyes held James captive, paralyzing him with an unseen force.

'What is this? My body refuses to obey!' Panic clawed at James's throat.

"Fawnawlly, we mwet Jwewes. Aww swevhed thwe whow wof thwisv cwovtri lwoving fwov ywu." A grotesque howl slithered from the creature, a sound that defied comprehension.

If one were to take a keen interest in the shenanigans the creature uttered, it would translate: "Finally, we meet James. I've searched the whole of this country, looking for you."

But the creature's words were nothing more than an unsettling noise to James, his present predicament far outweighing any curiosity about the strange sounds.

Regardless, the monstrous entity slowly emerged from its hole. Its form can only be deduced as something that came straight out of a child's nightmare.

"What is this?! What the..." James choked out, his voice a mere whisper before an impulse seized his legs. Against his will, they began to move, a primal instinct screaming for escape.

In that instant, his brain relinquished control, his subconsciousness seized the reins and gave a singular command echoing through his head: flee.

James's feet pounded the forest floor in a frantic, rapid rhythm. He didn't register the rough terrain, the sharp stones, the tangled roots. All that mattered was distance, a desperate race away from the encroaching horror.

He dared not glance back, every fiber of his being focused on the desperate sprint.

After what felt like an eternity of breathless flight, he risked a quick glance over his shoulder. The heavy, rhythmic thudding of the creature's feet had been a constant dread in his ears.

Contrary to his expectation, the creature was still relentlessly pursuing him, its unseen form, a terrifying shadow on his heels.

'Why does this feel so chillingly familiar? It's like this horrific chase has played out before,' James's mind screamed amidst the pounding of his heart and the burning in his lungs.

"Iwv thiwv awv ywuve gwovt?! Cwomev on, wauw iwt two mwev!" The creature's booming voice crashed into James's ears, a deafening wave of distorted sound.

'I can't... I need to...' James's breath hitched, his lungs burning with each desperate gasp.

Exhaustion finally claimed him, his legs buckling beneath him. He stumbled and fell, scrambling behind the thick trunk of a massive tree, seeking a momentary sanctuary.

"Now that I can actually think for a second, I know why this feels so sickeningly familiar; it's the recurring nightmare that's haunted my sleep," the horrifying realization dawning on him as he huddled behind the tree.

"Ywo cwav rwun, bwevt ywu cwanv hide Jwewves." The creature's voice, still alien and unsettling, echoed through the trees.

"What the unholy f*ck? Did I just hear my name?!" James, despite his utter exhaustion, was jolted by a fresh wave of terror. Adrenaline surged through his veins, propelling him back to his feet.

"Nwev mwore gwemvs!" The creature roared again, its formidable voice resonating with an unnatural power that sent shivers not only down James's spine but seemed to make the trees in the woods tremble.

...

Meanwhile, deeper within the forest's heart, A posse of five stood motionless, their attention fixed on Jeremy.

Sunny, Robert, Kelvin, Priscilla, and Tolly all stared at him, their expressions a mixture of apprehension and unease. Only a few truly grasped the controversial utterance he made earlier, but it was undeniable that Jeremy's inner turmoil was reaching a boiling point.

He stood with unsettling yellow glints flickering in his eyes. Most dismissed it as a trick of the light, a reflection from the myriad of fireflies dancing in the twilight.

Tolly, the catalyst of the conflict, or so she believed, trembled inwardly, a cold dread gripping her heart at the prospect of Jeremy's wrath. Yet, her outward demeanor remained characteristically stoic.

"You lot can do yourselves a favor and head back. You're all useless to me anyway," Jeremy finally spoke, his voice strained as he fought to quell the tempest raging within him, his eyes briefly closing as if seeking a moment of calmness.

"Why did you make us follow you blindly from the very start?! You could have just let us find our own way back to the teachers!" Kelvin burst out, his voice laced with accusation and exhaustion.

"Arrrgh! When in the blazes did I ever tell you all to follow me?! I simply said I was going after James, and you all decided to tag along! How in the seven hells is that my fault?!" Jeremy retorted, his voice rising in pitch.

"But you-you-you're still the main reason we find ourselves in this mess! It's all down to your recklessness!" Tolly shot back, her voice betraying a tremor despite her attempts at composure.

"Consider yourself fortunate that I find you... extremely pretty and somewhat intriguing," Jeremy said, his back abruptly turning against the five as he abruptly dashed deeper into the shadowy depths of the forest.

"No! Why did he just run off like that?! Who on earth is strong enough to lead us out of this nightmare now?!" Robert lamented in his usual whiny tone.

The others exchanged irritated glances before reluctantly beginning to discuss who among them possessed great sense of direction.

...

Elsewhere, within an ocean of trees, a lone figure stood with a semblance of bravery, a rough rod pointed towards an eerily indistinct creature.

Its form was swallowed by the oppressive darkness. The only illumination provided by the carefree dance of fireflies flitting around it.

The moon remained stubbornly hidden behind the thick canopy.

The creature's most striking features were two pairs of eyes, burning with a sharp, fiery yellow intensity. All other details of its being remained shrouded in an unsettling obscurity.

"I don't care what thing you are! I'm ending this right here, right now!" James shouted, his own anger surging, a faint yellow glow beginning to emanate from his eyes.

"Hahaha haha! Awooooo!" The creature responded with a hysterical laugh that quickly morphed into an unearthly howl.

"What pathetic delusion makes you think you possess the power to defeat me?!" The creature bellowed, its voice a distorted yet undeniably powerful and thick sound that seemed to vibrate the very air.

It seemed to have exerted some unknown effort, its words now understandable to James.

"Even clinging to the power of the moonstone, you are nothing! A mere shadow compared to my might! You are just a weakling like your pathetic father!" The creature roared.

"My father?! What in heavens name do you know about my father?!" James confronted it, a consuming rage threatening to obliterate his fear.

"WHAT ARE YOU?! WHERE IS MY FATHER?!" James screamed at the top of his lungs, his eyes now burning with a fierce, incandescent light.

The faint yellow glow that had flickered moments before now blazed with the intensity of a raging fire.

As James unleashed his desperate cry, his body began to betray him. The pent-up fury, the raw terror, the sheer strain of the encounter – it all erupted within him in a violent, uncontrollable surge of power.

He immediately collapsed to his knee.

His fingernails elongated into sharp, claw like protrusions and a sickening crack echoed as his backbone reconstructed.

James was no longer just James. He was transforming into something monstrous, something unfathomable.
