Chapter 420 - Chapter 420: The Price of Control

Shin gave Bullseye a sarcastic smile and ignored him completely. He flicked his finger, launching an attack at the only one still capable of fighting—Madame Gao, who was lying there pretending to be dead.

When she sensed the air bullet flying through the air, Madame Gao had no way to dodge. Her head twitched slightly, and she immediately suffered a concussion, falling unconscious.

As for Bullseye, Shin had already anticipated his fate the moment he attacked Wanda and Pietro.

The moment Shin entered the room, a melee erupted between him and the supervillains. In reality, only a few seconds had passed.

Wanda and Pietro didn't react at first not until Bullseye used a long-range weapon against the two of them. Pietro, thanks to his extraordinary reflexes, responded in time.

Initially, the siblings had a degree of moral restraint and didn't want to involve themselves in Shin's fight. But Bullseye's indiscriminate attack enraged them both.

In fact, Bullseye had a history of targeting superheroes' loved ones, especially girlfriends. Daredevil, that notoriously unlucky guy, had several partners killed by him.

Unfortunately for Bullseye, this time he'd run into a wall. Quicksilver flashed forward, and every knife Bullseye threw was instantly caught by him.

Then Quicksilver sneered, a silver blur flickering through the room. He sped around Bullseye in an instant. Bullseye screamed as he was stabbed repeatedly, left looking like a human pincushion.

The stench of blood filled the room. Shin extended a hand and casually tossed aside a civilian. That man, apparently, had been the host for Venom.

Shin didn't recognize him, but assumed it was the reporter named Eddie. Whether he was Spider-Man's nemesis or the hapless investigator of the Life Foundation, it didn't matter. At this moment, the symbiote had been stripped away, leaving only a regular human behind.

As for the other two, Black Sky and Sandman, Shin couldn't strip away their powers, so he didn't release them.

And just like that, the supervillains under Kingpin's command had all lost combat effectiveness within barely ten seconds of the fight's start.

That was with Shin holding back. Otherwise, he could've flattened everyone in a single second.

"This guy is awful!"

Scarlet Witch pouted, clearly displeased.

Beside her, Jessica was squatting with her arms wrapped around her knees, trembling slightly.

After the Purple Man had been unconscious for several minutes, Luke Cage finally recovered. Jessica, though, was in worse shape. Even after the Purple Man had passed out, she hesitated and nearly attempted to fight.

Only with Wanda's help, through the power of chaos magic, did she fully regain her consciousness.

As a result, Wanda had seen much of Jessica Jones's memories and was thoroughly disgusted with the Purple Man.

Through her memories, she now knows the enemies Shin faced. Luke Cage was now familiar to her. New York's criminal emperor. An evil ninja syndicate from Japan with centuries of history. In any case, none of them were exactly upstanding citizens.

Jessica Jones didn't even recognize Venom or Sandman, but given their grotesque appearances, Wanda certainly didn't mistake them for superheroes.

Yeah, this world was that cruel. Even superheroes had to meet certain appearance standards. Beast from the X-Men and Nightcrawler were about as far as those standards could stretch.

With his grotesque, viscous form, Venom could at best qualify as an anti-hero, more likely, he'd be seen as a biochemical monster that escaped a lab.

Sandman was a bit better. In human form, he looked normal enough. Even when transformed, he didn't inspire the same visceral fear as Venom. Unfortunately, his criminal background was well known he was a convicted robber.

In the end, Wanda and Pietro accepted Shin's explanation. While being a gangster wasn't exactly admirable, the siblings didn't have particularly high moral standards to begin with.

Now, in the room, all the villains were tied up after some basic first aid. Only Kingpin remained free. Though pale and still injured, he sat there unrestrained.

But at this moment, the man was simply eating. Beef patties, grilled chicken, fried pork chops, and heaps of high-calorie food disappeared into his mouth. His complexion visibly improved with each bite.

After a while, Kingpin pushed away his plate, looked across at Shin with a faint smile, and wiped his mouth.

A moment ago, he'd looked half-dead. But now, wrapped in gauze and fed a full meal, he seemed almost fully recovered.

Wanda and Pietro kept glancing his way. Even Luke Cage, still shaken from earlier events, looked stunned by Kingpin's recovery.

Only Jessica Jones, still emotionally shattered, showed no reaction.

"Tell me, how are you going to deal with me?" Kingpin asked coldly, eyes locked on Shin. Despite being the defeated party, he showed no guilt or discouragement.

That alone set him apart from those pirates whose will collapsed completely after losing a fight.

Of course, that was also due to the difference between the two worlds. The Marvel universe wasn't like the world of One Piece, where all strong individuals earned their place through talent and grit.

In contrast, Marvel had too many odd ways to gain power. Drink a serum, fall into a vat of chemicals, get bitten by some weird insect, or get irradiated by gamma rays, and boom, a superhuman is born. Someone powerless today could be a world-ending superhuman tomorrow.

So even after losing a fight, it might just be chalked up to bad luck. It wasn't necessarily a sign of weakness. As a result, defeat didn't have the same mental impact here as it did in the pirate world.

Shin rubbed his temple slightly. "Really shot myself in the foot. I didn't expect boosting your potential would backfire like this."

"But don't test me. I know your place well enough. Killing you isn't an option, if that happens, New York would descend into real chaos."

As the king of New York's underworld, Kingpin certainly brought harm. But even so, it was a more stable situation than the fractured chaos that would follow.

Otherwise, in Marvel comics, powerful organizations like S.H.I.E.L.D., S.W.O.R.D., and Weapon X, each backed by the military or government, could've taken him out long ago. It's not that they couldn't eliminate Kingpin. It's that they couldn't eliminate the endless wave of gangsters popping up across New York.

Kingpin might be the emperor of crime, but he was also a leash on the underworld. Any form of order was better than complete disorder.
