The silence between us stretched like a taut wire, ready to snap. Yuko's voice trembled, her words barely more than a broken whisper, thick with unshed tears.
"I'll go." Her chin quivered as she forced the words out, her voice cracking under the weight of her own surrender. "If that's what you want. I'll pack my things... and you'll never have to see me again."
Something inside me snapped.
