They entered the town, the sight of it striking a chord of deep sadness in Li An's heart. The streets were deserted, save for a few gaunt figures who looked at them with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion. The houses were run down, their roofs caved in, their windows shattered. The air was heavy with the smell of death and decay.
"This is a ghost town," Kaleen muttered, his hand instinctively going to the hilt of his hidden dagger.
"It's a testament to the current troubles in the empire and the Emperor's lack of concern," Moren spat out, his frustration mounting. "The people are starving, and those bastards are feasting in the palace."
General Theron's face was grim. "Moren, enough. We are here on a mission. We are not here to incite rebellion. We have to find an inn and gather information."
