Chapter 16 - Episode 14 : The strange alarm

The silence didn't last.

From outside the hall, a sudden alarm bell rang through the Phoenix Realm—sharp, fractured, urgent.

Not ceremonial.

Not routine.

A warning.

Feng Hua's head snapped toward the sound immediately.

Feng Hua: "That's the outer barrier alarm."

Feng Muyu's expression darkened.

Feng Muyu: "Someone breached the perimeter."

Shaoyang instinctively tightened her hold on Qianfan, but his body reacted differently this time.

His eyes sharpened—just slightly.

Not fear.

Instinct.

Like something deep in him recognized danger before thought could form.

Qianfan slowly pushed himself up, this time managing it with effort.

Shaoyang: "Hey—don't force yourself."

Qianfan didn't answer.

His gaze drifted toward the direction of the alarm.

Faint.

Unfocused.

But changing.

Qianfan: "…That sound…"

His voice was quieter now, but steadier.

Feng Hua turned fully toward him.

Feng Hua: "Do you recognize it?"

A pause.

Qianfan frowned harder, like something inside him was pulling against a locked door.

Qianfan: "…It's not the first time I've heard it."

Shaoyang and Feng Hua exchanged a quick glance.

Feng Muyu stepped forward slightly.

Feng Muyu: "Explain."

Qianfan pressed a hand briefly against his temple.

His breathing slowed—not from weakness, but concentration.

Qianfan: "…Not a memory."

A pause.

Qianfan: "A reaction."

Shaoyang's voice softened.

Shaoyang: "What kind of reaction?"

For a moment, Qianfan's expression changed again—but this time it wasn't fear.

It was recognition buried too deep to fully surface.

Qianfan: "…Run."

The word dropped heavily into the room.

Feng Hua's eyes narrowed.

Feng Hua: "Run?"

Qianfan finally looked at her directly.

And this time, his eyes held something different than before.

Not confusion.

Not collapse.

Warning.

Qianfan: "When that sound happens… people don't stay in place."

A pause.

Qianfan: "…They disappear."

Outside, the alarm intensified.

Closer now.

Shaoyang rose slowly beside him.

Shaoyang: "Disappear how?"

But Qianfan didn't answer.

Because for the first time since waking—

He wasn't the one reacting to fear.

He was the one remembering it.

And somewhere in the distance—

Something was entering the Phoenix Realm that even Chen Hai had not fully controlled.

Feng Muyu didn't wait for another second.

Feng Muyu: "Seal the inner hall. Now."

The command snapped through the space like a blade.

Two elders outside immediately responded, spiritual sigils flaring as barriers began to rise along the hall's entrances.

But the alarm didn't fade.

It shifted.

Like whatever had triggered it was moving deeper instead of being stopped.

Shaoyang stepped closer to Qianfan instinctively.

Shaoyang: "Can you stand?"

Qianfan hesitated.

Then, slowly—he nodded.

Not fully stable. Not fully sure.

But present.

That alone was already different from before.

He pushed himself upright with Shaoyang's support, his footing uneven at first before settling into something more grounded.

Feng Hua watched him carefully.

Feng Hua: "Your body remembers danger faster than your mind does."

Qianfan didn't deny it.

Because he could feel it.

A pressure—not spiritual, not external.

Internal.

Like something inside him was aligning to a pattern he didn't understand.

Qianfan: "…It's getting closer."

Feng Muyu turned sharply.

Feng Muyu: "What is?"

Qianfan's eyes shifted toward the direction of the alarm again.

This time, clearer.

Less fragmented.

Qianfan: "…Not a person."

A pause.

Qianfan: "…A signal."

Silence dropped.

Shaoyang frowned.

Shaoyang: "A signal?"

Qianfan's hand tightened slightly at his side.

Qianfan: "Something that… calls things."

Feng Hua's expression darkened immediately.

Feng Hua: "Calls things to what?"

Qianfan's lips parted slightly—but he hesitated.

Like the answer sat behind a locked wall.

Then—

A sharp pulse of energy hit the barrier outside.

BOOM.

The entire hall shook.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

One of the outer wards flickered violently.

Elder voices shouted from outside.

Elder (distant): "It's not breaking—it's syncing with the barrier!"

Feng Muyu's eyes widened slightly.

Feng Muyu: "That's impossible…"

Shaoyang instinctively stepped in front of Qianfan without thinking.

Qianfan, however, didn't retreat.

His gaze sharpened further.

And then—

Very quietly—

Qianfan: "…I've felt this before."

Everyone froze.

Feng Hua: "Where?"

Qianfan's breathing slowed.

This time, not from trauma.

From memory forcing its way through.

Qianfan: "…Not here."

A pause.

Qianfan: "…Before Chen Hai."

That name again—but now it didn't collapse him.

It opened something.

His eyes narrowed slightly, as if something long buried was struggling to surface.

Qianfan: "…There was a place."

His voice grew quieter.

More distant.

Qianfan: "…White stone corridors… no sky…"

Shaoyang's grip on his sleeve tightened.

Shaoyang: "Qianfan… don't push too hard."

But Feng Hua raised a hand gently.

Feng Hua: "Let him speak."

Another pulse hit the barrier outside—stronger this time.

The hall lights flickered.

And Qianfan flinched—but stayed upright.

He forced the words out.

Qianfan: "…And something that always… rang before they came."

Silence.

Feng Muyu's expression hardened.

Feng Muyu: "Before who came?"

Qianfan looked up slowly.

And for the first time since waking—

There was no confusion in his eyes at all.

Only certainty forming through fractured memory.

Qianfan: "…Not Chen Hai."

A pause.

Qianfan: "…Something worse."

Outside, the barrier finally cracked.

A thin fracture of light split across the Phoenix Realm's defensive dome.

And through it—

A sound answered the alarm.

Not an attack.

A response.

Like something had heard the call… and finally arrived.

The cracked barrier didn't explode.

It opened.

A thin fracture widened across the Phoenix Realm's outer dome, not shattering outward—but bending inward, like reality itself was being peeled apart from the seam.

Then silence fell.

The alarm stopped.

That silence was worse.

Shaoyang instinctively stepped forward half a pace, but Qianfan's hand caught her wrist.

Not forceful.

Just firm enough to stop her.

Qianfan: "…Don't."

His voice was low.

Different now.

Focused.

Feng Hua's eyes sharpened immediately.

Feng Hua: "You see it?"

Qianfan didn't answer right away.

His gaze stayed fixed on the fracture in the air.

Then—

Qianfan: "It's not breaking in."

A pause.

Qianfan: "…It's already here."

Feng Muyu's expression darkened.

Feng Muyu: "Inside the barrier?"

Qianfan nodded once.

Slowly.

Certain.

Qianfan: "It never came through the front."

Shaoyang looked between them, tension rising.

Shaoyang: "Then where—"

She stopped mid-sentence.

Because she felt it too.

A shift.

Not in the hall.

In the space behind them.

A pressure change so subtle it didn't announce itself like an attack.

It felt like… being watched from inside a sealed room.

Feng Hua turned sharply.

Feng Hua: "Move."

Too late.

The air behind the central pillar rippled.

Not violently.

Deliberately.

Like something was choosing where to exist.

A shape began to form.

Not fully visible.

Not fully present.

But arriving.

Qianfan's grip on Shaoyang's wrist tightened slightly—not in panic, but recognition.

Qianfan: "…That's it."

Shaoyang whispered.

Shaoyang: "That's what?"

Qianfan's voice dropped even lower.

Qianfan: "…The thing that comes when the signal finishes."

The shape solidified another fraction.

Not humanoid.

Not beast.

Something in between—wrong in a way the mind struggled to categorize.

Like it had learned how to imitate presence without actually being alive.

Feng Muyu raised his hand immediately.

Feng Muyu: "Defensive formation—NOW!"

Spiritual energy erupted across the hall as runes ignited along the floor.

But Qianfan didn't move with them.

He stared.

Not frozen.

Listening.

Then he spoke again—quietly, almost to himself.

Qianfan: "…It's searching."

Feng Hua snapped her gaze to him.

Feng Hua: "Searching for what?"

Qianfan's expression tightened slightly.

Qianfan: "…For whoever responded first."

Shaoyang's breath caught.

Shaoyang: "Responded…?"

Qianfan finally looked at her.

And this time, there was something in his eyes that wasn't confusion or fear.

It was understanding he didn't want.

Qianfan: "…I think it heard me earlier."

A beat of silence.

The hall temperature dropped.

Feng Hua's voice went quiet.

Feng Hua: "Qianfan…"

But the entity moved.

Just slightly.

Its attention shifted.

Not toward the elders.

Not toward the seals.

Toward him.

And the moment it did—

Qianfan's body reacted instantly.

His spiritual energy flared without command.

Raw.

Instinctive.

Shaoyang: "Qianfan—wait!"

But it was too late.

The formation in his body responded like a reflex he never learned—

As if something inside him had been trained long before he ever arrived in the Phoenix Realm.

Light erupted around him.

And the entity… paused.

For the first time.

It recognized him too.
