The office was quiet now.

Too quiet.

The lingering scent of tobacco smoke and the faint metallic tang of adrenaline still hung in the air from earlier.

Elijah and Jack were already gone, their footsteps and presence fading into memory, but their absence left a different kind of weight pressing down on the room.

It wasn't the kind of silence that brought peace.

No—this was the kind that left your ears ringing, the kind that made your own heartbeat sound too loud.

Kai stood near his desk, eyes locked on Benjamin like a predator that had decided its prey wasn't worth eating—yet.

Benjamin swallowed hard.

His hands itched to shove into his pockets, but he resisted the urge.

Any sudden move felt like it might set Kai off.

His brother's eyes were sharp, cutting through him like they were peeling away layers to get at the rot beneath.

Kai's voice came out low, steady, and far too calm. "Benjamin… you ever do that again, I'll kill you."
